Forest and Wildlife Resources

Biodiversity exists in plants and wildlife through multiple network of interdependencies.

Conservation of Forest and Wildlife in India.

- Conservation of wildlife population and forestry has become essential as it preserves
the ecological diversity and our life support like water, air and soil.
- It also preserves the genetic diversity of plants and animals for better growth of
species and breeding.
- Aquatic biodiversity is necessary for maintaining fisheries.

Methods of Conservation.
Wildlife Protection Act, 1972
- This act consisted provisions for protecting habitats of wildlife. Under this act, an all
India list of protected species was published.
- Under this act, the remaining population of certain endangered species is protected
by banning hunting and restricting trade in wildlife.
- Wildlife Protection Act of 1980 and 1986 included many small creatures like
butterflies, moths, beetles dragonfly and other insects in conservation strategy and
added these to the list of protected species.
- They are important in maintaining the ecological balance and in agricultural
productivity.
- In 1991, plants were are added for the first time to the list of protected species
starting with six plant species.

Establishment of Reserves.
- To protect the biodiversity, the Central and many State Governments have
established many national parks wildlife sanctuaries, bird sanctuaries and some
biosphere reserves.
- Now the conservation strategy focuses on biodiversity rather than on few species
only.
Project for Specific Animals.
- The Central Government has announced several projects for protecting gravely
threatened species.
- These include tiger, one-horned rhinoceros, the Kashmir stag or hangul, three types
of crocodiles, freshwater crocodiles, salt water crocodile and Gharial, Asiatic Lion
and others.
- Most recently, the Indian Elephant, Black Buck, (Chinkara), the Great Indian Bustard
(Godawan) and Snow Leopard have been given (partial or full) legal protection
against hunting, poaching and illegal trade throughout India.
Types and Distribution of Forest and Wildlife Resources.
- In India, much of its forest and wildlife resources are either owned or managed by
the government through the forest department or other government departments.
- Forests are classified under these 3 categories:

- Reserved Forests.
- These forests are owned by the government and all the human activities like
collection of timber, grazing of cattle, etc. are not allowed in these forests.
- They are regarded as the most valuable forests in terms of conservation of forest
and wildlife.
