Chapter 1:

Introduction & Mol Balances

(Part 1)
Chapter to CLO to PO Mapping

Chapter 1: Introduction & Mol Balances

CLO#1: Apply the principles of chemical reaction engineering to solve reaction

engineering problems involving multiple reactions and non-isothermal
processes for homogeneous system

PO#3: Design solutions for complex chemical engineering problems and design
systems, components or processes that meet specified needs with appropriate
consideration for public health and safety, cultural, societal, and environmental
considerations.
Learning Outcomes

At the end of this chapter, students should be able to:

1. Explain the importance of Reaction Engineering knowledge

2. Explain the different types of chemical reactors and their

importance

3. Define general mole balance equation in relation to type of

reactors

3
Why study Reaction Engineering??

How are we going to increase

Lab Scale the production from lab to Commercial Scale
commercial scale?

Repeat the process

100,000,000
1 g of times 100,000 ton/yr
product/batch in one year?

Can we make bigger “flask”

and repeat the same • How fast is the reaction take
process? place? Chemical
• How big is the reactor needed? Reaction
• Which design is ‘suitable’ for
We could, but its not as the process? Engineering
simple as just
multiplication
What is Chemical Reaction Engineering (CRE)?

From Levenspiel (2004, page iii):

CRE is engineering activity concerned with the exploitation

of chemical reactions on a commercial scale.

Its goal is the successful design and operation of chemical

reactors, and probably more than any other activity, it sets

chemical engineering apart as a distinct branch of the

engineering profession.

Batch reactor Continuous stirred tank

reactor (CSTR)

Plug flow reactor (PFR) Packed bed reactor (PBR)

7
Batch reactor

• small-scale
operation

The manual labour

• testing new
cost for this reactor
processes
may go high since
everything is done
manually. • manufacturing
expensive
products

• Slow reaction,
need long hours
to complete
8
Continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR)

• Normally used for

▪ Produce lowest
liquid phase
conversion per unit reaction
volume. • Perfect mixing

▪ Usually designed
• Steady state
specifically for a
desired reaction
operation
process, difficult to
use for other
reaction.

9
Plug flow reactor (PFR)

• Steady state
operation

• Perfect mixing (No spatial variation in the radial

direction, but in the axial direction)

10
Packed bed reactor (PBR)
• The amount of catalyst used

• Steady state
operation

• Perfect mixing (No spatial variation in the radial

direction, but in the axial direction)
