$56,250 36,058 Anonymous 41,667 Will Russell, VP & Specialist, European Furniture, said of The Gilded Age: 500 Years Decorative Arts Europe: We were honored to be able to offer so many excellent pieces from more than a dozen of Americas most distinguished museums, including the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Huntington Art Collections, Minneapolis Institute of Arts, the Speed Art Museum and the Corcoran Gallery, among others. Collectively, the museums earned nearly $2 millionabout 50 percent more than pre-sale estimatesto invest in expanding their collections. Today, just as in the Gilded Age, U.S. and international buyers displayed a voracious appetite for works that were exceptional examples of their kind, from the top lot, a richly colored 17 th century French Biblical tapestry with an interesting provenance, which sold for $446,500; to the pair of dazzling Venetian glass flasks, from the Property of Robert H. and Clarice Smith, that fetched $170,500. Collectors also avidly bid for two entire paneled rooms, in the styles of Louis XVI and George II, which went for $164,500 and 86,500, respectively, as well as for a Hugo Lonitz majolica model of a hawk, which sold for 10 times its pre-sale estimate. Combined with the Country House sale on Monday, the two sales brought in a total of $6,638,213.
