"CHLORINE ATTACKER-DS"
INSTRUCTION
1. General description
Marine growth will often causes the equipments such as condenser to become blockaded in the
case of using sea water as cooling water at ships, thermal power stations and etc..
YDK marine growth prevention device CHLORINE ATTACKER-DS will produce chlorine and
hypochloride by electrolyzing sea water and protect the equipments from marine growth by
blending them to cooling sea water.
Even if residual chlorine in cooling sea water is at very small density, 0.05ppm as standard, it will be
effective well, so it will not corrode the equipments and nor pollute the sea water.
When sea water is electrolyzed with non-solube anode chlorine (Cl2) and sodium hypochloride
(NaCIO) will be produced as follows.
( At anode ) 2C1- ------------------- Cl2 + 2e- ( FORM - I )
( At cathode) 2Na+ + 2H2O + 2e- ----- 2NaOH + H2 ( FORM - 2 )
( At mixing) Cl2 + 2NaOH ------------ NaCIO + NaCl + H2O ( FORM - 3 )
According to FORM-3, most of chlorine (Cl2) changes to sodium hypochloride (NaClO), sodium
hypochloride attackes marine growth as follows.
NaCIO ------------------ NaCl + [O] ( FORM - 4 )
[O] in FORM-4 means oxygen in condition of atom. It kills marine growth pactically. In case sea
water is dirty, a great quantity of sodium hypochloride will be used up according to FORM-4.
In practical electrolysis of sea water, following reactions will happen secondarily.
( At anode ) 4OH- ------------------- O2 + 2H2O + 4e- ( FORM - 5 )
( At cathode) Mg + 2H20 + 2e
2 - ---- Mg(OH)2 + H2 ( FORM - 6)
The reaction of FORM-5 makes efficiency of producing chlorine decrease and that of FORM-6
causes scale of magnesium hydroxide to adhere to cathode. For the purpose of high
efficiency, that is obtained by controling the reaction of FORM-5 and promoting that of
FORM-1,chlorine ion (Cl-) has to be supplied continuously to anode. Therefor it increases effiency to
mix enough sea water electrolysed.
Then adhesion of the scale causes sea water flow to be abnormal, that results in decrease of
effiency. Still more that causes strong-alkaline solution produced partly, resulting in corrosion of cell
and anode. YDK marine growth prevention device 'CHLORINE ATTACKER-DS' clear up the problems
by using unique cell making DOUBLE SPIRAL FLOW.
2. Construction and features
2-1. Electrolytic cell
1) Double spiral flow
In YDK marine growth prevention device 'CHLORINE ATTACKER-DS', scale of magnesium hydroxide
produced on cathode secondarily dose not adhere practically, because it has unique double
spiral flow. It mixes well sea water electrolyzed, that results in high efficiency of producing chlorine.
In this cell a high density of sodium hypochloride can be produced, because sea water has a fully
long time in contact with electrodend chlorine ion in sea water can be made use of effiently.
In the following figure, sea water injected into the cylindrical cell from tangent direction flows
making double spiral in such a way illustrated with arrow marks and runs out from axial pipe. It is the
reason that in only whirling of water rate of flow drops at the center but in double spiral flow it dose
not drop largely even near center because circling momentum is held there.

2) Easy maintenance
Draining or cleaning with reverse flow is not necessary because of little adhesion of magnesium
hydoxide. The anode can be easily pulled out by loosening only four bolt-nuts.

3) Easy exchange of anode

After anode is pulled out from the electrolyzer with anode holding-board, it can be easily
detached by loosening bolt-nut in following figure.

4) Body of electrolyzer is cathode

As body electrolyzer is cathode, it has a long life due to the same law with cathodic protection.

2-2. Electric part

1) DC power supply
It takes small and light switching power supply unit, and is able to operate in safty depend on
protection device.(over current,over voltage)
2) Protective device for electrode
a. When level of sea water flow electrolyzed drops, electrolysis automatically stops according to
interlocking with flow switch.
b. When electrode has been over-load, over current protector operate and the system stop.
c. In case of Item a, when sea water flow became normal, system restart automatically.
In case ob Item b,the system does not start automatically so please off run switch and NFB,after
check the system and confirm no problem, restart by hand-operation.
d. In case of short-circuit due to electric accident,No-Fuse-Breaker tripps and stops operation.
3. Adjustment and operation procedure
1) Open fully the electrolyte injection valves, which are equipped with sea chest.
2) Operate the pump and let the sea water flow into the electrolyzer. Then make certain that
setting of flow switch is correct. (Settig value is the red index of inlet flow meter)
3) Making certain whether the given amount of sea water is flowing, turn the No-FuseBreaker on.
Then make certain that source lamp turns on.
4) Next, turn the A-regulator clockwise, and set electrolytic current to usual value. (Refer to Fig.1
Treated amount-Electrolytic current-Chlorine density)
5) Check whether or not the electrolyzed sea water is distributed properly to each cooling system
by taking the sea water from the air vent, which is fixed to sea water pumps to suck the sea
water from each sea chest.
If the residual chlorine dosage is 0.05ppm, it will be good.
If it is not within the allowance, adjust the injection valve of each sea chest.
In case of the redidual chlorine dosage is low as a whole, increase the electrolytic current. And
in case of high,decrease it.
Note;
1) If the sea water is turbid, residual chlorine dosage is decreased and may not appear. Therefore,
the measurement must be made where sea water is clean.
2) Make the data of electrolytic current and residual chlorine dosage both at times of the ship is
sailing and anchoring. According to the data, set the electrolytic current and electrolyte
injection valves.
3) The opening degree of the injection valves often varies by vibration, so check it periodically .

4) In areas where sea water has higher density of salt or higher temperature, readjustment of
electrolytic current is necessary, because larger current flows in such a place.
In areas where sea water and fresh water are mixed, stop electrolys is because it is difficult for
current to flow there.
5) Even if electrolysis has been stopped, electrolytic voltage meter does not become on zero
point.
It is not due to breakdown of the meter but due to formation of electrolyzer. To make certain of
zero point of the meter, it is necessary to cut off electrically the voltage meter from the electric
circuit.
4. Determination of residual chlorine density
1) Open the air vent valve of sea water pump and let the sea water flow out for one minute, then
proceed for determination in according to the instruction of chlorinedeter mination apparatus,
which is provided with the device.
2) Wash test tube thoroughly before determination. If it is dirty the correct value can not be
obtained.
5. Operation note
1) First, make certain that the given sea water flow is followed. If it is satisfactory, apply a current.
Also when you close the inlet and outlet valves of sea water, you must, first, stop its operation.
2) Don't let flow electrolytic current more over reguler value. Under operation,if electrolytic current
become on zero point, check following order.
* Electric part
1) Have each fuse been normal ?
* Electrolyzer
1) Have flow amount kept on normal ?
2) Have electrode and lead wire been short-circuit ?
3) Have coating of electrode been used up completly ?
3) Electrolytic current may be varied by the resistance of sea water depends on the place or the
season of the year. In case the current is varied exceedingly, readjust it to a proper value.
4) Check residual chlorine density to be 0.05ppm about once a month.
5) Check electrode every three months by pilling out it together with anode holding board. In case
that the clay-like white substance (magnesium hydroxide) is found in the electrelyzer, wipe it off
thoroughly with cloth.
The magnesium hydroxide adheres in abundance when the flow in the electrolyzer is small and
large amount of it will cause the current to become decreased and will damage the electrode.
Therefore, given sea water flow must be maintained when the device Is under operation. Anode
is coating platinum on the base material titanium plated.
So, pay attention to handle and do not knock or damage it. Life of anode is about two years.
Anode is possible to use.even if coating fall off somewhat, but if the appointed electrolytic
current is not again in spite of normal electrolytic voltage, please exchange new one. And,
anode is also possible to refresh by recoating.
In time of checking, clean through the air vent tube with the tool provided.
6) In case operation to be stopped for a long time, let sea water out of electrolytic cell from drain
valve.
