‘Student Status’ is a dating website for college and

university students. Read Victor’s profile on the website.
My name’s Victor and I’m 25 years old. I’m from
Brasilia and I’m single. I’m studying Business Studies at
London University. It’s really interesting and I love London.
My mum and dad are English teachers for an online
language school in Brazil – so my English is good. I want
to work in Europe when I leave university – perhaps at a
travel company because travelling is my favourite thing
to do.
People think that I’m a quiet person when I first
meet them, but my best friends in Brasilia say that I’m very
talkative! I don’t like team sports very much, but I love
running. I run with a running group from my university.
The people in the group are very friendly and we see new
areas of London every week – London is a very beautiful
city, but cold! I run most days, sometimes with the group
and sometimes alone, and I try to eat lots of healthy food.
I live in a house with three other students. We go out
to a restaurant together every Friday night. I enjoy trying
new food and talking together. At the weekend, my three
housemates like loud bars and clubs, but I prefer museums
and cafés.
I’ve got short black hair and brown eyes, and I’m slim
because of all the running I do. Sometimes I have a beard
but I don’t at the moment. I’m looking for a partner who
is kind and funny. I’d like to meet someone who has the
same interests as me.
Would you like to go on a date with me? If so, I’m waiting
for your reply!

DS (doesn’t say).

Last autumn I was helping my sister to find a

photographer for her wedding. I was looking at wedding
photographs online when I saw my first sakura picture.
Sakura, or cherry blossom, are light pink flowers that arrive
in spring on cherry trees. The flowers are very beautiful,
and very popular in wedding photos in Japan. In fact, the
sakura flowers are very popular with everyone in Japan.
After my sister’s wedding, I needed a quiet holiday.
I decided to visit Tokyo and see the cherry blossom. I
booked a week in a hotel at the end of April. I bought
a new camera and searched online for the best places
to look at the trees. I arrived safely and checked into my
clean, comfortable hotel. I slept well and got ready for my
first day of sakura photography.
Then the problems started. Although it was morning,
when I arrived at Inokashira Park it was already very busy.
Large families were having picnics. Couples were on dates.
I couldn’t get near to the trees. My pictures were a disaster.
At the end of the day, I went back to my hotel feeling quite
sad. But when I was looking at my photos that evening, I
found one picture of a little boy looking at the flowers. He
was laughing. It was a great picture.
The next day I returned to Inokashira Park but this
time I only took pictures of people. I spoke to people
who I thought looked interesting – people with colourful
hats, or unusual hair, or nice faces – and I asked to take
their picture with the flowers. I had fun and I met lots of
friendly people. Now when I look at my sakura pictures,
I remember the cherry blossom but I also remember the
stories.

Are you planning a stopover at Schipol airport?

If the answer is ‘yes’, then visit Amsterdam. This
beautiful city is only a short train journey away. We
asked two people who live there: ‘We have three hours
in your city. What are the best things to do?’
Anika, 26
It depends on the weather. Check the forecast when
you arrive at the airport. If the weather is not good,
visit one of our famous cafés. Try some bitterballen –
it’s a kind of Dutch meat snack – or have some
pancakes with Dutch cheese. I’m sure you’re going to
love Dutch food. If it’s a sunny day, spend some time at
the flower market. The flower shops are on small boats
and it is also a great place to buy gifts. You will return
to the airport feeling happy and with many colourful
pictures to look at on your journey.
Hendrik, 34
Take a ride on a tram. A tram is a kind of electric bus
that drives on metal lines in the road. Amsterdam has
a great tram system – I use it every day to get to work.
I think the number 2 route is best for tourists. That’s
the tram that drives past many of the main Amsterdam
sights, like the Van Gogh art gallery. The trams leave
Amsterdam Central Station regularly and tickets are not
expensive. You can see your luggage is safe but you
don’t have to carry it. And you won’t be stressed about
getting back to the airport in time — you can get off
the tram at any stop and return to the station on tram 2
in the opposite direction. It’s perfect.

DS (doesn’t say).

Have you ever been to a shop and bought a dress

that was too small? I have. Have you ever bought
clothes online and then never worn them? Yes, me too.
In fact, although my wardrobe is full, I usually wear the
same trousers and jumpers every week. I think most of
my friends have the same problem.
Now imagine a clothes store with no check out and
no prices! Last weekend, I went to a store like that. It
was a ‘Clothes swap’ at my college. Here’s how it works.
You bring clothes that are nearly new which you don’t
want any more. Then you swap with other people. I
took twelve items to the ‘Clothes swap’. When I arrived
at about 9.30, it was already busy. One of the student
organizers checked that my items were clean and nearly
new. Then she gave me twelve labels – one label for
each of my items – which I could swap for new clothes.
There were changing rooms and mirrors, so I tried on
a few things. I wanted a blue party dress but there wasn’t
anything blue in my size. I decided not to look at the shoes
at all. Instead, I tried on a cute black skirt and smart white
shirt. They were perfect. By lunchtime, I still had ten labels
but it was time to go. Although I swapped just two items
for my original twelve, I was happy.
The ‘Clothes swap’ was a lot of fun. My wardrobe and
my bedroom are tidier. Swapping is also good for the
planet because it is a kind of recycling. I think swap events
are something that everyone can enjoy. Happy swapping –
and don’t go shopping!

Analise, Clean Gym
Do you find rubbish annoying? Two years ago,
250 new homes were built in my town. The rents went
down but the mess and dirt went up. I was irritated. I
was frustrated. So I decided to start the Clean Gym. We
walk around the parks, children’s play areas and quiet
roads and we collect rubbish. It’s a great way to meet
new people and make a positive change to our town.
And, yes, it is exercise, too. In each Clean Gym Clean
Up we walk around five miles. And it’s free! Visit our
Facebook page to find out more.
Marlon, Busy Body Gym
Busy Body Gym helps people to get fit faster. I am
a good example of this. Last year I changed jobs.
My journey to work changed from 2 hours to just
40 minutes. Finally, I had some free time … but not
much. Could Busy Body Gym help? Yes, because in
the early mornings and evenings they have lots of
different short classes. Each class is just 30 minutes.
The aim is to work really hard and fast. So far, I’ve tried
cycling, boxing and karate. Check out their class list on
Facebook. Classes can be crowded so it’s a good idea to
book before you arrive. One short session is £12 but it’s
worth it. I got fit faster with Busy Body Gym!

Do you think positively? I hope so, because if you do,

you’ll be more successful in your job. Optimists can see
new opportunities and can respond well to stressful
situations. Or are you a negative thinker? I hope not.
Studies show that pessimists have fewer friends and take
longer to get better when they’re ill. But there is good
news. It is possible to change how we think.
Amy: Write a positivity diary
We often remember the bad things that happen but we
forget the positive things. Write down five positive
things every day in a special diary. These can be small
things such as ‘A woman on the bus had bright red
socks’ or bigger things like ‘I finished all my work today’.
At first, it can be hard to think of five things. But if you
do it every day, I promise it will get easier. You can read
the diary when you are feeling sad or depressed, and
that will make you feel more positive. My diary has
helped me to be more positive about my life and about
the world around me.
Pol: Try a ‘digital detox’
Do you lie in bed at night thinking ‘I’ll never get a
promotion’ or ‘I won’t pass my English exam’? Try a
‘digital detox’. Avoid screens for one hour before you
go to bed. You can listen to music or read a book,
but you cannot go online or use social media. Now my
busy brain is ‘turned off’ before bed time. I sleep better
and that means I work better during the day. As a result,
I have less to worry about and I feel more positive.

What makes you happy? Eating a delicious meal?

Watching a beautiful sunset? For me, happiness is
surfing. I love sitting on my board and watching the
sea. When I ride a wave I feel truly happy. I’m Mauricio,
and I’m a surfing teacher in Tamarindo – my home
town in Costa Rica. In my job, I enjoy meeting people
from all over the world.
Now, let me ask you another question. Do you
think it’s possible to measure happiness – to count
it and say who is more happy or less happy? Well, it
is! Researchers look at numbers such as: how long
people live, how much money people have, and how
much damage people do to the environment. Then the
researchers write a report to say what they have found.
Costa Rica must be a very happy place. Recently
we came top in the Happy Planet Index – a list that
compares happiness information from 140 countries
from all over the world. It is the third time we have
been number one! World leaders and politicians are
very interested in these happiness reports because the
countries that do well can be surprising. Being rich
doesn’t always make people happy. Some of the richest
countries in the world are in low positions on the Happy
Planet Index list.

Last month a computer problem at London’s

Heathrow airport caused problems with air travel around
the world. We interviewed two people about their
journeys.
Fumi Watanabe, 37
It was very stressful. There was no information at the
airport. I wanted to know: ‘Will there be flights tomorrow?
Will the airline give us our money back?’ The information
desk didn’t have any answers, which was really annoying.
They should have a plan for this sort of thing. There were
thousands of people, all trying to change their journeys
at the same time. Some people got angry with the airline
workers, which was mean – they were only trying to do
their job. I decided to stay at the airport. I thought, ‘If a
plane arrives, I’ll be first in the queue.’ I lived in the airport
for the next 16 hours. The food was OK, and I even found
some showers. It was all very expensive but I kept my
receipts. When I finally arrived home, nearly two days late,
I was exhausted.
Charles Henley, 54
People ought not to panic in these situations. But we
do. It’s normal human psychology. If we feel trapped,
we try to run away or we get angry. That’s why people
sometimes get angry in traffic jams – they just want to
escape. The best thing to do, usually, is to stay where you
are. I was in Madrid on business when the computers
at Heathrow broke down. I didn’t go to the airport, I
phoned my hotel straight away and booked three extra
nights. With my laptop and good wi-fi I could still work
easily.

Do you want to see lions and elephants, buffalo and

crocodiles, and many other wild animals? For 35 years Go
Botswana have provided expert safari holidays. All safaris
have an element of danger. That’s what makes them fun!
But do you know what the real dangers are?
Hippos are the second largest animal in Africa –
only the elephant is bigger. The males weigh as much
as three small cars! Hippos are also the most dangerous
land animal you will meet on safari. That might sound
surprising because most people think hippos are slow and
lazy. They can run very fast and they have very big teeth.
In fact, they killed around 500 people across Africa last
year. During the hot African day, hippos need to keep cool.
They spend almost all day asleep in rivers and lakes. It isn’t
a good idea to go swimming while you’re on safari.
If all safari tourists followed these simple rules, the
number of people hurt by animals each year would go
down.
• Stay in your vehicle. If you see an interesting animal, do
not get out of your safari vehicle to take a picture. Our
drivers will get you to the closest and safest possible
location to see the animals.
• Don’t wave at the animals. Animals can become
aggressive if people wave their hands or other objects at
them.
• If you meet an animal that seems nervous, stay
quiet and walk backwards to get away.
• Always wear walking boots and long socks.
Wearing the correct shoes will protect you from snakes,
scorpions and biting spiders.

This week in Inventor’s World, we speak to two

professional athletes about how modern inventions
have changed their sport.
Luke Gautier, road cyclist
Professional cycling is a very inventive sport. Riders
and bike teams are always happy to try out new types
of bicycles, helmets, cycling clothes – anything to try to
save one second in the race. In my opinion, the biggest
change in recent years is what the bikes are made
of. Thanks to a technology called carbon nanotubes,
racing bikes are stronger and lighter than ever before.
Carbon nanotubes were invented by the computer
company, IBM, but so far no one has used them inside
computers. In 1996, the Swiss company BMC made
the first ‘carbon fibre’ racing bike – it won the Tour de
France that year. Carbon nanotubes are also used in
tennis rackets and the screens of phones.
Edgar van Marl, swimmer
Sometimes a new invention can be controversial.
In my sport, a new type of swimsuit caused problems
a few years ago. The company involved, Speedo,
have made swimsuits for over one hundred years. In
2008 they made a new suit called the ‘LZR racer’, the
suits were designed with long arms and legs to help
swimmers cut through the water like a fast shark. When
Michael Phelps wore the suit at the Olympics in Beijing
he won eight gold medals and said, ‘I feel like a rocket’.
Swimmers loved them, but the judges didn’t. The suits
were banned and there are now a lot more rules about
what suits are made of.

Confidence coach, Marika Novotny, discusses the

importance of quiet people.
Some of the most important places in life, such as
classrooms and businesses, are designed for confident
people. Quiet students are often told by teachers to
‘try harder’. It’s the same in offices. When any group
of people has to make a decision, the loudest opinion
is usually selected. That might be the best opinion, of
course – but it might not. In films and on social media,
leaders are usually shown as loud and confident, proud
of their opinions. Loud is successful, right?
Wrong! In her book Quiet, Susan Cain gives examples
of leaders and thinkers from history who were quiet.
According to Cain, quiet business leaders are more
creative and great at solving problems.
If you are a quiet person who wants to make their
voice heard, what can you do? The most important
thing is to take action. Decide to change a specific
behaviour and then do it. For example, speak to
someone you don’t know very well today. Research
tells us that when we change our behaviour in small
ways like this, it changes the way we actually think
about ourselves. We do, in fact, start to become more
confident. Practice is also very important. If you need to
speak in front of an audience, practise out loud.
For me, I’ve gradually become more confident as
I’ve grown up. I still don’t have many friends, but that’s
fine – my few friends are very important to me. And
perhaps I am their important quiet person.

Kalim, 26 — In 2017, I travelled around Europe for

a month. It was my first trip outside Turkey. I was also
desperate to impress my girlfriend. She loves ballet, and
when we were in St Petersburg, I decided to surprise
her. I bought tickets from a ticket office at the theatre.
I was pleased because they’d cost a lot less than I
expected. That evening we headed to the theatre
wearing our smartest clothes. When the performance
started, it was immediately obvious that I’d made a
mistake. We were watching an opera. And they were
singing in Russian. We couldn’t understand any of the
words, but in the end that wasn’t important. The music
was incredible and we could follow the story quite well.
Sergei, 48 — Last year I took my wife and two
children to Rome. I’d studied there when I was in my
twenties and I was looking forward to showing the city
to my family. We visited the famous Trevi Fountain – it’s
one of the most beautiful statues in Rome and always
busy with tourists taking selfies. On this particular day,
it was very crowded and my wife was feeling hot and
tired, so we all sat on the wall around the fountain. My
wife was trying to take a selfie of all four of us. I tried
to make her laugh by waving my arms around, but I
fell into the water. We have a very funny picture of my
children’s faces as I disappear. Lots of other people
recorded this moment in their selfies and videos. For a
day or two I was almost an online celebrity. I enjoyed
my moment of fame.

Have you ever made a New Year’s resolution?

In many cultures, people choose to change something
about their life at the beginning of the year. And all over
the world, people celebrate the new year with interesting
customs.
My favourite traditions come from Mexico and other
Latin American countries. For example, at midnight
on New Year’s Eve in many Spanish-speaking cultures,
everyone eats twelve grapes – one grape for each month
of the year. People say that eating the grapes brings good
fortune for the new year. And don’t be surprised if your
friend from Peru wants to walk around the outside of
his or her house with heavy luggage. Traditionally, if you
complete this challenge you will be a successful traveller in
the new year.
Cleaning the house is perhaps the most common
new year tradition. Some people believe this removes bad
luck and allows good luck to enter the house. In countries
such as Britain and Iran, the cleaning happens later in the
year, so it’s called ‘spring cleaning’. In Iran, just before the
March spring festival, people empty their houses of all
their furniture. They clean the house from top to bottom,
mend broken furniture or replace old items. People bring
flowers and herbs indoors too so their homes smell fresh
and clean.
If you are in Denmark at New Year, you will probably
see piles of broken plates outside front doors. Traditionally,
people take their old or broken plates and smash them on
their friend’s front door. It brings good luck to your friend.
So, a big pile of broken plates means you are a popular
person.

Our health editor, Nikki Langer, interviewed two

people whose jobs show that dogs can improve human
health.
Ben Forster, dog trainer — Dogs are the most
common therapy animal because they are easy to
train, and because there are many different sizes. For
a hospital visit, for example, it might be important to
have a small dog which someone can hold on their
lap. The most important thing, though, is the dog’s
personality: it must be calm and quiet. Most therapy
dogs are not puppies and they have to complete a
special training course before they can work in hospitals
or schools. There are many benefits for the patients and
children.
Jasmin Hussain, tutor — I used to have mental
health problems. A few years ago, my doctor
recommended getting a dog. She said that walking
with a dog and caring for it would help me to recover –
and that was true for me. Now Domino comes to the
university with me and helps my students. She sits in my
office during my classes. When my office door is open,
students know they can come in and talk to Domino.
My university department has lots of international
students and some of them are far away from home.
One girl told me that she missed her pet dog more than
her parents! If Domino didn’t come towork with me,
the students would definitely be sad. He’s a great dog:
very gentle and he loves it when people stroke him.
Thanks to my students, he has also learned instructions
in several languages!
