Which Is the Odd One Out?

Adult Guidance
This resource can be used to help children to recognise groups and sets. It also helps with recognising
similarities and differences.

Ways to use this resource:

• Print the resource and provide paper copies. Children can circle the odd one out in each set using a pen
or pencil. Each child’s work can then be kept.

• Print and laminate the resource. Children can use a dry-wipe pen to circle the odd one out. The resource
can then be cleaned and reused.

• Cut the resource into strips and laminate them. Children can attach a peg to the item that they think is
the odd one out in each set.

• You could place this activity in an area for children to access independently.

• You could use this resource as part of an adult-led activity. Children can show the odd one out using any
of the ideas above, or by simply pointing or saying their answer aloud.

• If working with a child or group of children, use lots of talk and discussion. Model spotting similarities
and differences between the items yourself, e.g. “These animals all look like frogs. This animal
is different because it has a shell. I think this animal is the only tortoise. I think the tortoise is the
odd one out.”

• Encourage children to name each item, e.g. “House, present, house, house, house.” This will help to
reinforce the odd one out.
