RI IMSI™
Introduction
Please read this manual carefully before using the system, and follow the instructions to ensure that
your RI IMSI™ system will work reliably. Obtaining high quality images requires careful set-up and
regular cleaning.
This manual does not contain detailed instructions for using micromanipulators, the microscope or
additional optical components. For detailed information, refer to the individual manuals supplied with
each system component.
Intended Use
To faithfully reproduce the image from a high-resolution microscope on a computer screen, for the
purpose of conducting Intracytoplasmic Morphologically-selected Sperm Injection (IMSI) technique,
during assisted reproduction procedures.
Specifications
DC2 Digital Camera High sensitivity, 1.4 MP, 2/3’’ colour CCD
Monitor 21” 1600 x 1200, DICOM compliant medical imaging monitor
Software RI Viewer ™ software included
Hardware Overview
The quality of the image in an IMSI system is primarily determined by the optical components. IMSI
requires high resolution optics to obtain fine detail, and good contrast enhancement in order for the
detail to be seen easily. Your microscope supplier can provide suitable components.
Resolution does not depend on magnification, but is related to the Numerical Aperture (NA) of the
objective and the condenser. The NAs of both should be as high as possible whilst maintaining practical
working distances.
IMSI works at the limit of what is possible to see with visible light, so, whatever the optics used, they
must be set up exactly according to the instructions supplied. The microscope must also be regularly
serviced and kept clean.
IMSI Monitor
We recommend a monitor designed for medical imaging, and that the PC is fitted with a separate PCI-E
graphics card with DVI (Digital Video Interface) output and at least 256MB memory.
Place the monitor in a convenient position close to the microscope.
Adjust the height and angle of the monitor such that the operator can comfortably look towards the
centre of the screen.

RI VIEWER™
Introduction
RI Viewer is the software that interacts with the Saturn 5 Laser System for use within an ART laboratory.
Connected to a camera attached to a microscope, it provides on screen images of samples under the
microscope. It can record video and store still images from the microscope in a PC’s file system.
RI Viewer software is provided on a CD and can be downloaded from Software.research-instruments.com.
Once installed the RI Viewer application can be started by double clicking the RI Viewer icon
on the desktop.

A camera will need to be connected to the PC running RI Viewer and the drivers installed correctly to
view live images within RI Viewer. The dongle must also be fitted to a USB port.
RI Viewer software will automatically recognise both analogue and compatible digital cameras connected
to the PC. If there is only one camera detected, it will show the live image for that device. If multiple
cameras are connected, it will use the camera that was last selected from the Video Source drop down
box. You may select the device you want the live image to be viewed from. To do this select the camera
from the drop down list on the Settings panel.
1. Click the General Settings icon on the tool bar. The Video Source drop down box will have a list of
camera names referring to the cameras connected to the PC.
2. Click on the drop down box to allow the selection of cameras. Clicking on the required camera in
the list will change the live image to that of the selected camera.
Note: The list of available cameras is automatically populated to show the attached devices. Camera
names in this list cannot be altered by the user.

Camera Flipping
Camera flipping can be used for those microscopes where the camera image is inverted. This often
occurs when the camera is mounted on the eyepiece tube.
Clicking the Additional Camera Settings icon on the tool bar will show a panel indicating the camera
name and frames per second (fps). Clicking on Additional Settings will allow the user to adjust settings
on the video source. Only settings available to the video source chosen will appear.
Objectives
Objectives can be changed on the microscope to enable the user to get a larger field of view or higher
magnification. If you require accurate measurements of the image, the objective chosen in RI Viewer
must be the same magnification as the objective in use on the microscope.

RI Viewer Gallery
The RI Viewer Gallery is used to review, store and add comments to images and videos taken using RI
Viewer. The RI Viewer Gallery icon can be found on the tool bar.
When images and videos are taken with RI Viewer, they are saved to the pre-configured storage folder.
This is configured from the Settings screen of RI Viewer. The RI Viewer Gallery shows all of the images
and videos in this folder. It allows them to be reviewed and then printed, deleted or assigned to a
patient. Once they have been assigned to a patient, they can also have references and comments added.
These can then be printed alongside the images.
The Gallery icon in RI Viewer is used to open RI Viewer Gallery. The first screen displayed is the
Un-Assigned Images screen below.
To return to RI Viewer, close the Gallery using the cross in the top-right corner.

4. Select Patient
Once images or videos have been assigned to a Patient ID, they are no longer shown on the Un-
Assigned screen. To view the images and videos assigned to a patient click the Select Patient button
to show the Select Patient box. Then enter the patient ID number into the box and click the arrow
to go to the Patient Details screen for that patient. See “Patient Details” on page 9.
6. Re-Assign
If the Patient ID was assigned incorrectly click . A pop-up box will appear in which the
correct patient details relating to the image or video can be input. Click OK to save.
7. Edit Details
This is used to enter a patient name, reference and a comment. These are saved with each image
and are displayed on the Patient Details screen.
If a different patient name, reference or comment has been entered across a selection of images,
the Edit Details screen will display multiple values for these fields. Changing this will alter the value
for all of the selected images.
8. Copy
This copies the selected images and videos to the clipboard. These images can then be pasted to a
new location such as a USB drive or into another application such as a word processor.

Maintenance
Monitor Calibration
The monitors we supply will provide a high quality image with minimal set up. However, performance
of any monitor will change slowly over time, and periodic calibration will ensure a high quality image
for as long as possible.
Larger hospitals may have calibration facilities already in place to cover monitors used for X-ray imaging.
Contact your IT/maintenance department for information.
Calibration involves measuring the screen output using a colorimeter. The measurements are stored
by the graphics card and used to compensate for any slight errors. Note: The colorimeter is specific
for DICOM calibration on these monitors. General purpose colorimeters (eg Datacolor Spyder3)
are not compatible.
Colorimeters can be supplied by RI, or a calibration service may be offered by your RI distributor or local
representative of the monitor manufacturer. We suggest calibrating your monitor every twelve months.
