Learning Objective:To discuss women’s movements and gender equality

Women who inspire

History is filled with events and tremendous accomplishments, but far too often,
it focuses solely on the lives of males. After all, the clue is in the name - His story.
Indeed, along the history-making men of the past, there have always been many bold
and innovative women of all genders doing amazing things while facing sexism.
Here we’ll focus on two of them who were highly forgotten by this so-called history.
Ada Lovelace (1815 - 1852) was a great mathematician and a collaborator of Charles
Babbage, who is regarded as the inventor of computing. Ada, on the other hand,
released work that outperformed Babbage’s work by demonstrating how codes
might be created for the ‘analytical engine’ utilizing both letters and numbers. Her
work was overlooked at the time of publication in the nineteenth century, and her
groundbreaking contribution was not recognized until the 1950s.
Una Marson was an Afro-Jamaican anticolonial feminist, poet, journalist, broadcaster,
and dramatist who lived from 1905 to 1965. Marson was the BBC’s first black woman
employee, hosting and producing a radio show that included letters from West Indian
soldiers fighting in the Middle East and broadcast them back home in the Caribbean.
Marson was a pioneer in the study of the link between gender, race, and social class.

TASK 5
Choose the best option to answer the questions.

Learning Objective:How to add essential information to a sentence

Lately I’ve been happily fielding a not-so-surprising question: “Why are you raising
your family in a small apartment?” Well, the question usually sounds more like, “Aren’t
you looking for a house?”
While we certainly could be house hunting if we wanted, the truth is, we don’t have
the desire. It is of course a bit countercultural as in the US, 80% of the population
prefer to live in a single-family home, while only 70% do. Meanwhile, apartment and
condo living is preferred by only 8% of the population, yet 17% of Americans do live
in an apartment or condo.
In European countries, however, apartment living is more common. In Spain, for
example, 65% of the population live in apartments.
Clearly, choosing an apartment over a home is not the “American norm.” So why do
we love being in that 8%? What’s the draw to apartment living? I think many people
don’t even stop to consider the benefits. Some that instantly come to my mind are
simplicity and less clutter. There are less maintenance jobs and you need to have less
stuff, which leads to you being able to relax more.
If you’re looking for a way to simplify your life and focus on what matters most, why
not give apartment living a try?
It’s not the American norm, but it could just be the right lifestyle for you.
