PSY 215 Module Five Milestone Template

Complete this template by replacing the bracketed text with the relevant information.

For this milestone, you will use the Four D’s diagnostic indicators to analyze one behavior that might
impair a person’s adaptive daily functioning. You will determine if that behavior could potentially
represent a clinical disorder. Use your template to address the rubric criteria listed below with a
minimum of 3 to 5 sentences per bullet. Support your answers with a credible source when necessary.

From the list in the Module Five Milestone Guidelines and Rubric, select one behavior that might impair
a person’s adaptive daily functioning, then address the following:

 Distress: Describe the extent to which the selected behavior causes distress as characterized by
mental or emotional imbalance.
To complete this assignment, I will summarize the four D's of psychosis. It is possible for
psychosis to cause distress to the patient for several reasons. When suffering from psychosis,
the patient feels on edge and in danger due to hallucinations and delusions. The assumption
that psychosis is intrinsically distressing might seem reasonable, according to a PubMed article
(Griffiths et al., 2018). Given the increased risks of suicide, reduced social functioning, and poor
clinical outcomes associated with psychosis, it might seem reasonable. By being in distress
during a psychotic episode, one can end up suffering even more distress.

 Dysfunction: Describe the extent to which the selected behavior causes dysfunction by
interfering with adaptive daily functioning.
Adaptive daily functioning can be interfered with by psychosis in many ways. Psychosis can
cause individuals to lose their entire day(s) through hallucinations and delusions. It would be
impossible for people suffering from psychosis to work, do their daily activities, or even know
where they were. Consequently, individuals suffering from psychosis can suffer from
dysfunctions with their adaptive daily functioning due to hallucinations and delusions.

 Danger: Describe the extent to which the selected behavior presents as a danger to self or
others.
People who suffer from psychosis may be in danger of harming themselves or others for several
reasons. People with psychotic episodes experience hallucinations and delusions that take over
their minds. These symptoms may indicate that the individual is paranoid about someone else's
safety or about their own. Psychosis may cause a person to feel threatened by others or believe
they are being persecuted... Strong delusions and hallucinations may lead a person to react
unpredictably or even aggressively. Consequently, people suffering from psychosis are at an
even greater risk of self-harm and/or harming others.

 Deviance: Describe the extent to which the selected behavior deviates from normality.

1
A psychotic individual's daily life is impacted by deviance in many ways. It is common for an
individual to see and hear things that aren't real when they are experiencing hallucinations or
delusions. A person suffering from psychosis will deviate from reality and believe that their
reality is the only one true. Psychiatric illness can cause a person's behavior to diverge from
what is normal in reality.
