What Adolescents Miss When We Let Them Grow up in

Cyberspace

Vocabulary and Comprehension

1) The word hermetic means staying in an enclosed space

without the influence of the outside world. In the
paragraph, it refers to the enclosure of the
teenagers/children in their rooms using the Internet
without connecting with the nature outside.
2) Teenagers who spent much of their lives hunched over
computer screens miss the socialising which is the real-
world experience that would allow them to leave
adolescence behind and grow into adulthood.
3) The causes are given below in the following:
a) Teenagers avoid the adult’s scrutiny in their lives by
using emails, discussion groups, instant messages
online chat rooms.
b) Younger people use the Internet to replace face to face
interactions with their families and friends by staying
connected over the net.
c) Online shopping, checking email, web surfing has a lot
of the young people to spend their time at their ease
without doing the activities in the traditional way.

4) Negative effects of Internet provided by Staples are:

a) Due to Internet use, teenagers have less socializing,
which causes them to be less prepared to step into the
adult life.
b) The young people are more isolated than ever from
their friends and families because of the advantage on
online chat rooms, instant messages.

Critical Thinking
1) The story about Marcus tells us that they can create false
profile of themselves making them more powerful,
creative and knowledgeable.
2) Growing up Brent had the opportunity to have social
encounters outside his family members. A story shared
by him is the time when he had met the father of the girl
he liked, and he explains how different it was to prove
his worth to her father then. He had the experience of
dealing with people in real life interactions which is
missing in the lives of teenagers now. Teenagers do not
encounter such social interactions anymore which makes
it harder for them to thrive in the adult life.
3) Staple mentions that with the help of internet teenagers
had the chance to protect their social life from adult
scrutiny and can have much safer access to their own
lives.
4) In my opinion, Internet had made life our life much
easier now. We have the access to the whole globe while
sitting at a one location. Most importantly, it allows us to
have communication with our loved ones while being in
different continents.
