VIOLATIONS AND FOULS
Any breaking of rule is either violation or fouls.
VIOLATIONS: breaking the rules in relation to the playing ball. And the penalty is that
the ball is given to the opponents outside the sideline. Some examples of violations are:
 Taking more than one step with the ball without passing, dribbling or shooting.
 Deliberately kicking the ball with foot or lower leg.
 Stepping out of bounds with the ball
 Double dribble ( dribbling by two hands or dribbling again after a stoppage from a
continuous dribble before passing or shooting it)
 Traveling -taking more than one step while in possession of the ball.
 Dribble or hit the ball with their fist.
 Out-of-Bounds – causing the ball to go out-of-bounds by stepping on or over the
boundaries
 Failure to observe free throw regulations.
 They should shoot the ball before the shot clock clicks.
 Failure to shoot the ball and stay in the restricted area of the opponent’s team for
more than three seconds.
 Hold the ball and stay in the backcourt that contains their basket for more than 8
seconds.
 Failure to attempt a shot within thirty seconds of gaining possession of the ball.
 Holding the ball for more than five seconds at a time.
 If you commit such violations, the ball will be given to the opponents out of bounds
near where the violation occurs
FOULS
There are two types of fouls called personal and technical fouls.
 Technical fouls: are fouls committed in relation to the game situation/materials or
referees. Some examples of technical fouls are:-
 Delaying the game
 Taking too many time-outs
 Leaving the court without permission
 Showing unsportsperson like behavior.
 Touching the backboard or rim illegally.
 Failure to report to the officials when entering the game as a substitute.
 Touch the ball, basket or its rim while the ball is passing through the basket.
 Personal fouls: are fouls committed in relation to the opponent player.
Some examples of personal fouls are:
o Holding,
o Pushing,
o Charging,
o Blocking,
o Illegal use of hands and preventing the progress of opponent players by extending arm or leg.
If you commit a personal foul in the restricted area free throw will be given to the opponent.
 Fouling a player who is in the act of shooting will results to give :only one free throw if
the basket is scored (basket and foul)
 Two free throw: if the shoot is missed and the referee considered it as an Intentional one.
 In personal foul the fouled player is the one who should attempt the free throw if he/she
is physically able
 But any player can take a free throw during technical fouls.
 5 personal fouls on any one player results disqualification from FIBA Games.
 NBA league tolerate disqualification until personal foul becomes 6.
 7 team fouls results to give the opponents 1 plus bonus shoot
 10 team fouls results to give opponents shoot double bonus.
 After a goal/basket / is scored the game is restarted behind the end line by a member of
the opponent team which didn’t make the sore
OFFICIAL
An official(usually called a referee) is a person who has the responsibility to enforce the rules
and maintain the order of the game. Basketball is officiated by a referee ( main) and an umpire
( assistant),Two scorers and two timers assist them.
SCORING

The basic objective of basketball game is to score more baskets than the opponents team
during the play time. So in basketball players can score 1,2,3( or even 4 points) during a
possession .
One point will be given for each free throw.
Two point is awarded for a field goal.( scored when a shooter is inside the arc of the opponent’s
court.)
Three point will be given for each basket scored in play where the position of the shooter is outside
the arc of opponent’s court
