Introduction

“English is the language of science, aviation, computers, diplomacy and tourism. Last but not

least, it is the language of international communication, the media and the internet. Whether it is for

professional or personal reasons, understanding the importance of English will help you reach your goals”

(ETS, 2020). From the quoted explanation about how useful and convenient English language in our

lives, it proves us how this dialect can make a big impact while dealing with every battle in our life.

English language is a widely known tool used in communication, it became the instrument that makes

everyone lives easier but it also became a burden that put people in vain. Here are some recent

experiences of People who suffer from dialect discrimination in different fields:

Year 2015 when Pia Alonzo Wurtzback won the title for Miss Universe, she became really

famous because of the iconic event that happened to her before she even won the crown. The host

mistakenly announced the wrong candidate and that's when the talk of the town started. Many people says

that the mistakenly candidate Ms. Columbia does not deserve the crown because she uses translators to

answer the judges which is basically means that people are judging her by using her own dialect to

represent, and not to learn international language just to please everyone. According to Prof. Hernandez’s

discussion that centered on the rampant assumption that English occupies a position as the language of

the world and the significance of the language a candidate is using. Prof. Hernandez explained that if one

answers in the English Language in beauty pageants, there is a dispute on what kind of English is

acceptable. In the Philippines, there is a widespread discrimination against people who can’t speak

English fluently or against people who speak in English with an accent. He stated that this is due to

Filipinos equating the ability to speak English fluently as a sign of knowledge. Language choice becomes

a symbol, an assertion and is used as a weapon to “assert your social position.” He ends his discussion

with: "A lot of things affect your [linguistic] performance. Your performance does not equate to your

competence.” (uplinguafranca, 2017).

Filipino registered nurse, Nancy Ortiz, worked for Dameron Hospital in Stockton. Born in the

Philippines, English is her second language, and she speaks with a thick accent. Every time the director

met with the unit coordinators, she provided “negative feedback,” and will humiliate them. She insulted

unit coordinators on their accents and derided their supposed poor English language skills. Singling out

Filipinos, she told them during a meeting, “I don't know how Dameron gets you guys. Your accents are

thick. [You] don't know what [you are] doing.” She stated that “those of you with a thick accent, those of

you that cannot speak English ... need to go back to school and learn how to read and write grammar.”

The director also stated that “she was tired of attending meetings where Filipinos and minority workers

over 40 were present.” She told the unit coordinators that they could “step down, step up or step out.”

“As a Filipino call center worker, I experienced racism in nearly every shift.” He is a freelance

journalist and development worker based in Iloilo City, Philippines. In his statement he said, “I used to be

a call center agent in the Philippines, until daily racism from U.S. customers pushed me out. For four

years, I worked in five call centers in Iloilo City, taking calls for banks, internet service providers,

insurance, and telecommunications companies” (Murga, 2021).

Because of discrimination and high standards of employer and many people towards their

personnel that being fluent in English became a requirement to pass the job someone is applying, many

people became unemployed even those who just finish college is having a hard time to find the suitable

job for them and because of this, poverty has increases over the year.

Theoretical Framework

Theory of Multiple Intelligence

Howard Gardner, a psychologist, is another proponent of the theory of multiple intelligences,

which proposes that there are several types of intelligences instead of a single general intelligence (1983,

1999). Gardner believed that having varied abilities and skills would be evolutionary advantageous and

proposed that there are eight different types of intelligence. Existential intelligence, which could be the

ninth intellect, still lacks scientific confirmation. Gardner focused his research on individuals who had

experienced strokes that affected some intelligences but not others, as well as youngsters who were gifted

in one or more areas. The abilities of autistic savants, who score poorly on intelligence tests overall but

may nonetheless have exceptional skills in a given domain, such as math, music, art, or the ability to

memorize statistics in a specific sport, provide some evidence for multiple intelligences, according to

Gardner (Treffert & Wallace, 2004). Gardner recognized these 8 intelligences based on additional criteria

such as a predetermined developmental history and psychometric results, in addition to brain injury and

the existence of savants (Lally & Valentine-French, 2019). A list of Gardner's eight distinct intelligences

can be found in Table 5.4.

Linguistic Intelligence

Verbal intelligence, sometimes referred to as linguistic intelligence, is the intellectual ability that

results in an exceptional command of both spoken and written language. A person with this intelligence

has a strong command of and knowledge of linguistic elements like phonology, morphology, syntax,

semantics, and pragmatics. As a result, they are able to comprehend, learn, and use language to achieve

particular objectives. This intelligence is demonstrated by writers, poets, orators, attorneys, and

politicians. Since those who possess verbal intelligence have a keen comprehension and appreciation of

language, you may notice some shared traits among them (Benedict, 2021). People who possess linguistic

intelligence:

• possess a wide vocabulary

• adore writing and reading

• able to learn and retain words and phrases

• excellent at debates, presentations, and persuasive speeches

• able to clearly convey things

• can pick up a language rapidly

• must understand the semantics of the words and their minor differences.

• can understand complex phrase structures with ease

English language in the Philippines

In 1521, Spain built its first colony in the Philippines, lasting 300 years. Although this ruled the

country for three centuries, it was unable to accomplish what the Americans did in just 50. The Americans

let the Filipinos comprehend with affection and warmly welcomed the Filipinos as one of their own, in

contrast to the Spaniards who nicknamed the Filipinos "Indios." Less than fifty years later, the Filipinos

developed close ties with the Americans since they were called to as "little brown Americans" by the

Americans. They then adopted the American way of life, the American way of government, and the

American language.

It's interesting to note that mass education, not religion, was how the Americans battled and

assimilated their opponents. The Americans made the most significant contribution to education in

Philippine history. In the Philippines, American colonists established schools that offered English as a

primary language of instruction. Many Filipinos continually promoted for the Philippines to become the

51st state of the USA after the USA declared its independence in 1946.

Both in law and commerce, English is now the preferred language in the Philippines. The

adoption of English as the major medium of instruction in the Philippines has elevated the country to a

more international scale. English is widely used by Filipinos in the media, the arts, social, economic, and

political activities. The Philippines and the USA remain strongly connected via their common language

This Filipino Psychology study intended to provide knowledge and discuss the Views of Filipino

workers on English as the basis of intelligence of selected BS Psychology students in Cavite State

University-Silang Campus.

The sectors below are those who would benefit in this study:

HR/ Boss—This research study will be a great help for them to understand that not all Filipinos can speak

English and not all who can speak English are fluent.

Filipino Applicants— In this topic, those Filipino who's applying for a job are those who are concerned

the most and most affected.

Researchers— This study may help other researchers who could have read this and be its guide to do a

more meaningful and deeper study regarding this English basis of intelligence.

Methodology

Research Design

This qualitative research ought to provide an understanding regarding English language as the

basis of intelligence.

The specific research design is explored in detail in this chapter. The type of design used in this

study is research that is used in multi- faceted understanding of a complex issue in its real- life context,

which is the case study. In this case study, it sought to address the following research question: What is

the reason why English language required when doing a job interview and how was language be the basis

of someone's intelligence? In that, the researchers sought to understand more of how a person who's

asking an interview view the Filipino applicants who are fluent in English and those who are not.

Population

Convenience sampling technique was utilized by the researchers to select the participants of this

qualitative study because it is efficient, simple and easy to implement for the researchers to conduct the

study.

Data Gathering Procedure

In this study, the data were gathered by the means of performing an interview with the minimum

wage earner Filipinos. An inform consent form were presented to each participant for the written

agreement of the both parties. (A face to face or an online) interview were conducted to ask the

participant on what are they ideas about the English as the basis of intelligence in the Philippines. The

interview was recorded in a written form and also in form of audio. Throughout the interview, the

researchers were strictly following the ethic consideration thereof.

Results

This part presents the results of this study on the views of Filipino workers on English as the

basis of intelligence.

Moreover, the researchers included all the problems that they wanted to answer according to the

statement of the problem of the study, and the five specific questions and answers of all participants in

this study are discussed individually below.

English”.

mundo”.

“Nakakamangha at nakapanliliit.

In question number 1, some of the participants had the same answer and perceptions regarding

that question. Some of them said that they were proud because most of the Filipinos who can speak

English fluently. Moreover, they said that being fluent in English is an advantage because you can

communicate with other people, especially foreigners, because it is a universal language. Some of them,

however, stated that it is also based on having a better job.

This question demonstrates that all of the participants had the same responses and perceptions

about the question; the participants desired to learn how to speak English fluently because they believed
Study about Views of Filipino workers on English as the basis of intelligence of BS Psychology students in Cavite State University-
Silang Campus

that being able to communicate with other people, particularly people of different races, was

advantageous. Moreover, they believe that being good at English is an advantage to getting a better job.

pakikipag usap at negosasyon.

Silang Campus

sau nang tao”.

In this inquiry, the perceptions or answers of the participants regarding the question are not the

same; some of the participants said that being fluent in English is not the basis for being called intelligent,

because the thought behind some participants’ answers is that we can learn to speak English by reading

some text book or novel. However, some of them are neutral, because there are a lot of bases for being

intelligent, not only being fluent in English. Additionally, some of them state that they believe that being

good at English is the basis of intelligence, because they believe that if you are good at it, you have an

advantage in communicating with other people and the ability to learn to understand the right

information.

Study about Views of Filipino workers on English as the basis of intelligence of BS Psychology students in Cavite State University-
Silang Campus

In this query, all the participants’ answers regarding the question had the same idea. The

participants agreed that learning to speak English is critical not only for Filipinos but also for people of all

races because it is our universal language and a key to understanding each other. However, being fluent in

English is also important because it will help us find work abroad or in another country.

Study about Views of Filipino workers on English as the basis of intelligence of BS Psychology students in Cavite State University-
Silang Campus

In this last question, the participants’ answers regarding the inquiry are mixed. Some of the

participants said that the Filipinos use the English language because it is taught to them by their parents

and the English language is taught in school. Moreover, some of the participants said that the English

language is the qualification needed to get a better job.

In this section, the researchers show the answer to the problem stated in the statement of the

problem of the study. The answers to all the problems will be explained by the participants’ answers to

their interviews with the specific questions.

Problem 1: Is English a foundation for intelligence?

Question number 3 on the specific questions of the study can explain the answer to this problem.

Being fluent in English is not the only way to demonstrate intelligence. There are numerous reasons to be

intelligent, aside from being fluent in English. English is only a language; it's a tool for communication,

not an indicator of someone’s knowledge or ability.

Study about Views of Filipino workers on English as the basis of intelligence of BS Psychology students in Cavite State University-
Silang Campus

Problem 2: Is it advantageous to be fluent in English in order to get a good job?

Based on the data that was gathered from the participants’ answers to the specific question, it is

agreed that being fluent or having knowledge of English is an advantage to getting a better job, especially

for Filipinos who want to work abroad. Because English is our universal language, knowing it is

advantageous because it allows us to communicate with others, particularly those of different races.

Problem 3: What is the perception of the participants in the study regarding the basis of

intelligence?

The participants’ perceptions regarding the basis of intelligence are mixed. Some of the

participants agreed that English is the basis of intelligence because it is difficult to learn; some of the

participants are neutral because it can be the basis or it cannot. And some participants disagree because

there are many reasons to be intelligent, and knowing English is not enough to be a basis.

Problem 4: Is speaking English really a basis of intelligence for Filipinos?

Based on the result of the data that the researchers gathered, the views of the participants

regarding the problem are varied, because some of the participants believe that English can be the basis of

intelligence, and some of the participants disagree with the statement.

Analysis

Knowing enough or being fluent in English is not a prerequisite for intelligence. There are many

or multiple intelligence bases, according to the participants' perceptions. The theory of multiple
Study about Views of Filipino workers on English as the basis of intelligence of BS Psychology students in Cavite State University-
Silang Campus

intelligences can explain this statement. The multiple intelligence theory mentions that there are several

types of intelligence instead of a single general intelligence. The theorist believed that having varied

abilities and skills would be evolutionary advantageous and proposed that there are eight different types

of intelligence (linguistic, logical-mathematical, spatial, musical, kinesthetic, interpersonal, intrapersonal,

and naturalistic). Gardner recognized these 8 intelligences based on additional criteria such as a

predetermined developmental history and psychometric results.

However, the participants in this study believed that it was also important to have knowledge of

English because it is advantageous in order for us to communicate with other people who cannot

understand our own language, which is Filipino. They believed that it also gave us an advantage in getting

a better job because it is one of the bases of some companies, especially when we plan to work abroad or

in another country. English is our second or universal language, not just for Filipinos, but for people all

over the world.

Even if English is not sufficient to serve as a foundation for intelligence, we all know that this

language or subject is highly important to us because it is used for so many things. Many films, television

shows, books, and musical works are now made or published in English. You will no longer need to rely

on translations and subtitles if you understand English. You will also enhance your English listening and

reading abilities by using these media. Furthermore, learning English not only provides a foundation for

intellect but also provides a lot of joy, and making progress will make you feel amazing

Discussion

The perspective of Filipino workers on English as the basis of intelligence are different in many

ways, the study shows that some Filipino are neutral regarding the English as the basis of intelligence,

some of them disagree and some of them agrees. English, as the language of science, computers, tourism,
Study about Views of Filipino workers on English as the basis of intelligence of BS Psychology students in Cavite State University-
Silang Campus

and most especially as a tool for the worldwide communication. This language is a really great help in

communication or in any forms specifically it’s an international language that everyone is required to use

to understand each other.

For these reasons, it has enlightened us that the views of the minimum wage Filipino earner

regarding on English as the basis of intelligence are varied, some of the participants are neutral with the

idea because showcasing how precise a person is using English language is not enough to determine their

intelligence. There are other ways in life to actually prove one's intellect in any matter, we cannot solely

determine someone's intelligence by how well they use the English language. Some of them believe that if

you are confident and sure about those English words you are saying, you will just sound smart. On the

other hand, they agree that you can determine someone’s intelligence because it is enough reason for them

that speaking and understanding English for a Filipino is an act of intelligence. They believe that we can

use English language for us to negotiate foreign people and to avoid misunderstanding with English

speaking people. And lastly, an ability to understand and speak English fluently have more opportunity to

be accepted on having a job and people will most likely to think that you are different. And finally, some

of them disagrees that being fluent in English doesn’t define a person’s intelligence because English

language maybe an advantage but not being fluent by it should not be discourage other people to lower

their self-esteem.
