The Lexercise Structured Literacy Curriculum™
Scope & Sequence for Parents & Teachers
The Lexercise Structured Literacy Curriculum™ is a structured literacy (aka. Orton-Gillingham)
approach for students whose struggles are related to decoding, spelling and writing. Research
suggests that 70-80% of students who struggle with reading and writing do so because of primary
weaknesses in decoding and spelling. This curriculum is designed to address the weaknesses
typical of dyslexia. There are 26 levels and 44 lessons.

In Professional Therapy, a therapist can customize a pace that fits each student’s needs and also
provide a pre-literacy Level 0 for an additional 8 lessons. In Basic Therapy and Lexercise for
Schools, the goal is to cover one lesson a week. The concepts taught at each level are listed
below.

Level 0 • Foundations of Literacy (only available in Professional Therapy)

Following simple spoken directions


Interaction and turn-taking
Responding to spoken questions
Basic pre-academic vocabulary words and concepts (e.g., colors, shapes, sizes, locations,
numbers, letter names, basic letter-sounds)
Listening to and participating in oral reading
Alphabetic foundations (e.g., reciting the alphabet, demonstrating knowledge of the
alphabetic sequence, identifying and naming letters and letter-sounds)
Writing letters
Numerical foundations (e.g., counting to 20, demonstrating knowledge of the numerical
sequence 0-12, identifying and naming numbers 0-20)

Level 1 • Basic Consonants & Vowels

Decoding and spelling words with the following letter-sounds: 7 basic consonants and 1
short vowel spelled -a-
Word parts: suffix -s
Reading and spelling the level’s sight words ( a, I, the, said, have, is, are, was, were)

Level 2 • Basic Consonants & Vowels

Decoding and spelling words with the following letter-sounds: 14 basic consonants and 3
short vowels spelled -a-, -i- and -e-
Word parts: suffix -s
Reading and spelling the level’s sight words ( to, too, two, do, does, into, onto)

Level 3 • Basic Consonants & Vowels

Decoding and spelling words with the following letter-sounds: 20 basic consonants,
the digraph -ck, and all 5 short vowels spelled -a-, -e-, -i-, -o-, -u-
Multisyllabic words with 2 stressed, closed syllables
Word parts: suffix -s
Reading and spelling cumulative sight words and the level’s sight words (some, from, many,
any)

Level 4 • Multi-Syllable Words, Closed Syllables

Decoding and spelling words with the following letter-sounds: 20 basic consonants,
the digraph -ck, and all 5 short vowels spelled -a-, -e-, -i-, -o-, -u-
Multisyllabic words with 2 stressed, closed syllables
Word parts: suffix -s
Reading and spelling cumulative sight words and the level’s sight words (some, from, many,
any)

Level 5 • Base Words with Double Consonant Letters

Decoding and spelling words with the following letter-sounds: 20 basic consonants, all 5
short vowels and words with consonant doubling patterns: “f”, “l”, “s”, “z” following a short
vowel (e.g., “kiss”) and double letters in the middle (e.g., “rabbit”)
Word parts: suffixes -s, -less, and -ness

where, why, which, whose)

Level 6 • The -ng- Letter-Sound & the -ing Suffix

Level 10 • Consonant Digraphs & Trigraphs, the Suffix Spelling Dropping Pattern

and consonant digraphs -th, -sh, -ch, -wh-, -tch, -dge
Word parts: cumulative suffixes, the suffixes -ship and -ish, and the two suffix spelling
patterns: the Dropping Pattern and the 1-1-1 Doubling Pattern

Level 11 • The Vowel Team Syllable Type

Decoding and spelling base words with cumulative letter-sounds introduced to-date, plus:
Vowel teams for long -a- (common: ay, ai; less common: ea, ei, ey)
Vowel teams for long -e- (common: ee, ea; less common: ei, ey, ie)
Vowel teams for long -o- (common : oa, ow; less common: oe)
Vowel teams for long -u- (common: ue, ew; less common: ou, ui, eu)
