1. A circle with centre 𝐶 has equation 𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 − 4𝑥 − 6𝑦 = 3.


a. Find the coordinates of 𝐶, and the radius of the circle. (3)
b. The points 𝑃 and 𝑄 lie on the circle, and the origin is the midpoint of the chord 𝑃𝑄. Show that
𝑃𝑄 has the length 𝑛√3, where 𝑛 is an integer. (5)
2. The line 𝐿 has equation −12𝑦 + 8𝑥 = 48. A circle 𝐶 has centre (−1,4), and 𝐿 is a tangent to 𝐶.
a. Find the coordinates of intersection between 𝐿 and 𝐶. (5)
b. Find the equation of 𝐶. (3)

3. The points 𝐴(2, 𝑎 ) and 𝐵 (10, 3 ) lie on a circle, and 𝐴𝐵 is a diameter of the circle, passing through
(9,15). The circle has equation:
(𝑥 − 𝑏)2 + (𝑦 − 𝑐)2 = 𝑑
Where 𝑎, 𝑏, 𝑐 and 𝑑 are rational. Find the values of 𝑎, 𝑏, 𝑐 and 𝑑. (6)
4. A circle with centre 𝐶(4, −3) has the equation:
𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 − 8𝑥 + 6𝑦 = 13
a. Find the 𝑦-coordinates of the points where the circle crosses the 𝑦-axis. (3)
b. Find the radius of the circle (2)
c. The point 𝑃(10,5)lies outside the circle.
i. Find the length of 𝐶𝑃, leaving your answer in the form 𝑛, for some integer 𝑛 (2)
ii. The point 𝑄 lies on the circle so that 𝑃𝑄 is a tangent. Find the length of 𝑃𝑄. (2)
5. The polynomial 𝑃(𝑥) is given by:
𝑃(𝑥) = 𝑥 3 − 2𝑥 2 − 15𝑥 + 𝑘
where 𝑘 is a constant.
a. Given that 𝑥 = −4 is a root of 𝑃(𝑥), show that 𝑘 = 36. (2)
b. Determine the quadratic factor of 𝑃(𝑥), and hence express 𝑃(𝑥) as the product of 3 linear
factors. (3)

c. Sketch the curve with the equation 𝑦 = 𝑥 − 2𝑥 − 15𝑥 + 36, indicating the values where the
curve crosses the axes. (4)

a. Find the binomial expansion of (1 − 2𝑥)7 , in ascending powers up to 𝑥 2 . (2)
b. Hence find the binomial expansion for (1 + 4𝑥)2 + (1 − 2𝑥)7 , up to 𝑥 2 . (2)
c. Find an estimate for 1.122 + 0.947 using your expansion. (3)
d. Using your calculator, determine the percentage error in your estimate. (2)

8. In the binomial expansion of (1 + 𝑥)𝑛 , where 𝑛 ≥ 4, the difference between the coefficients of 𝑥 4 and
the coefficient of 𝑥 3 is 5.5 × the coefficient of 𝑥 2 . Find the value of 𝑛. (5)
9. Sketch the region defined by the inequalities 𝑦 ≤ (4 − 3𝑥)(𝑥 + 4) and 𝑦 − 𝑥 ≥ 5. Clearly indicate your
region by shading it in and labelling it 𝑅. (3)
