If the number of questions answered correctly by Susan in section A is 25% more than that

7. The coordinates of the point A are (1, 7). A is rotated anticlockwise about the origin O
through 90° to B. A is also reflected with respect to the x-axis and then translated rightwards
by 2 units to C.
(a) Write down the coordinates of B and C.
(b) Let M be the mid-point of AB. Macy claims that AB and CM are perpendicular to
each other. Do you agree? Explain your answer. (5 marks)
8. In Figure 1, ABCD is a rectangle. E is a point on BC such that AD = AE. F is a point on AE
such that DF ⊥ AE. Let x be ∠EDF .

10. It is given that f(x) is partly constant and partly varies as x2. Suppose that f(2) = −20 and
f(−6) = 108.
(a) Find f(0). (3 marks)
(b) Write down the x-intercept(s) of the graph of y = f(−x). (1 mark)
(c) Let c be a real constant. Find the range of values of c such that the equation
f(x)= −8x − c has no real roots. (2 marks)
11. The stem-and-leaf diagram below shows the distribution of the numbers of Chinese
characters typed by a group of students in one minute.

It is given that the inter-quartile range is one-third of the range.

(b) A student is now added to the group.

student? Explain your answer.
(ii) If the range of the distribution is increased by 1, is it possible that the new
standard deviation of the distribution is less than 12.7? Explain your answer.

12. The coordinates of the points A and B are (a, 0) and (−2, 6) respectively, where a is a
positive constant. P is a moving point in the rectangular coordinate plane such that AP = BP .
Denote the locus of P by Γ.

(a) Prove that the equation of Γ is (2a + 4) x − 12 y + 40 − a 2 = 0. (2 marks)

(b) E is the mid-point of AB. F( f, 0) is a point lying on Γ, where f is a constant. A


circle C passes through A, E and F. G is the centre of C.
(i) Find the coordinates of G in terms of a.
(ii) If AF ⊥ EG, find the equation of C. (6 marks)

13. There are two solid metal spheres. The ratio of the volume of the smaller sphere to the
volume of the larger sphere is 27 : 64. The radius of the smaller sphere is 18 cm.
(a) Express, in terms of π, the surface area of the larger sphere. (3 marks)
(b) The two spheres are melted and recast into two solid right circular cones. Denote
these two solid right circular cones by X and Y. It is given that the heights of X and Y
are 30 cm and 22 cm respectively. It is found that the base area of X is equal to the
surface area of the larger sphere. Are X and Y similar? Explain your answer.

14. Let f ( x) = ax 3 − x 2 − 6 x + 2b , where a and b are non-zero constants. It is given that f ( x) is


divisible by ax 2 − 5 x + b .
(a) (i) Show that f ( x) is divisible by x + 2 .

(ii) Find a and b. (5 marks)


(b) How many rational roots does the equation f ( x) = 0 have? Explain your answer.

15. The monthly salaries of the staff of a company are different and the mean is $25 000. The
monthly salary of each staff member is increased by 4% and then $100 is deducted as staff
fund from each resulting monthly salary.
(a) Find the new mean of their monthly salaries. (2 marks)
(b) Is there any change in the standard score of each staff member after the adjustment?
Explain your answer. (2 marks)
(c) After the adjustment, a staff member of the company with monthly salary $25 900
resigns and the monthly salary of this staff member is deleted. If Mary’s monthly
salary is $20 000 after adjustment, will her standard score increase? Explain your
answer. (2 marks)

16. In Class A, there are 3 girls and 6 boys.


(a) Find the number of ways to arrange all of them in a row. (2 marks)
(b) Find the number of ways to divide them into groups of 2, 3 and 4 students. (2 marks)
(c) Find the probability that the two students chosen from class A are both boys.
(2 marks)
(d) In Class B, there are 2 boys. Two students chosen from Class A join Class B and
then three students are randomly chosen from Class B. Find the probability that the
three students chosen are of the same gender. (3 marks)

17. (a) It is given that ABC is a triangle, where AB = BC = 9 cm and AC = 10 cm. Find the
area of ∆ABC. (2 marks)
(b) Figure 2 shows the pyramid ABCD, where AD = CD = 8 cm. The base of this
pyramid is the triangle ABC described in (a).

It is given that the angle between AD and the triangle ABC is 40°. Does the angle
between the triangles ABC and ABD exceed 65°? Explain your answer. (5 marks)

18. The coordinates of the points A, B and P are (1, 7), (4, 8) and (2, 4) respectively. Denote the
origin by O. Let C be a point such that P is the orthocentre of ∆OAC. A circle Γ passes
through O, A and B.
(a) Find the equation of Γ. (3 marks)
(b) Find the coordinates of C. (3 marks)
(c) Hence, show that point C lies on the circle Γ . (1 mark)
(d) Q is the circumcentre of ∆OAC. R is a point on OC such that BR ⊥ OC.
(i) Find the coordinates of Q and R.
(ii) Are P, Q and R collinear? Explain your answer.
(iii) Hence, find the ratio of the area of ∆APQ to the area of ∆AQR. (6 marks)
