TOOLBOX TALK TOPIC: Safe Lifting

Safe Lifting

Correct lifting can move large objects efficiently and reduce manual handling operations. Incorrect lifting
however, can lead to disastrous accidents. Every year, incorrect lifting procedures cause injuries, loss of work time
and property. People, machinery, loads, methods, and the work environment, are all important factors for
correct lifting. Provided that enough safety measures are fully implemented, lifting accidents can be reduced
Basic Information
Personnel related to the lifting operation include "competent examiner", "competent person", "crane
operator", "slinger", "signaler" and others working nearby.
Testing, examination, and inspection
All testing and examination of cranes must be carried out by competent examiners and the regular inspections
completed by competent personnel. All testing, examination and inspection reports and certificates shall be
properly kept.

Safe Working Loads


The Safe Working Load (SWL) for operating the crane shall be specified according to the results of test and
examination certificates, and such loads must not be exceeded during the lifting operation

Safety Precautions:

Load
 Know the weight and shape of the load.
 Move the loads as near to the ground level as possible.
 Corner pads shall be used for loads with sharp edges.
 Do not ride or stand on a load that is being lifted.
 Ensure that the automatic safe load indicator is installed.
 Loose loads shall be packed or placed in suitable containers before
lifting.

The following are some of the basic safety precautions that


we have to practice during lifting works.
➢Obtain PTW for Lifting activity
➢Used approved hand signals clearly and distinctly.
➢Ensure correct pin in shackle is used and screwed.
➢Ensure hook is at central to stop load swing when raised.
➢Always use a guide rope to steady the load.
➢Warn operator of any obstructions to the load.
➢Ensure load is lifted off the ground and is free and correctly slung
before hoisting.
➢Pay attention to the load's center of gravity - ensure that it is kept
directly under the main hook
➢Plan a suitable lifting route, to avoid collision with any persons,
objects, or overhead power lines.
➢When the crane is in operational; don’t leave the area, unless relieved by another signal man.
➢To avoid damage to lifting gear, loads should be landed on to timber or other suitable bearer .
➢Protect wire ropes and slings from sharp edges of the load with soft wood or other suitable packing .
➢If there is heavy wind or visibility is affected due to bad weather, the lifting activity must be stopped
and operator visibility must be considered until further clearance from the Supervisor is issued .
➢Falling hazard is very imminent on this activity and in order to avoid such hazards safety precautions
shall follow.
