READING
I’ve got quite a large family, larger than most people’s, I think. You see, we live in a big house
and almost all of my parents’ brothers and sisters – my aunts and uncles live in the same town.
In our house, there’s me and my brothers, Andrew and Colin. So that’s three boys. Then there
are my four sisters, Julia and Kate, who are twins, and Lisa and Maggie, who are also twins. We
are all teenagers, except for Lisa and Maggie, who are the babies of the family – they’re ten.
Then there’s my mum and dad, of course. My grandmother – dad’s mum lives with us, too.
She’s great, always buying us things we don’t need but would like. My cousin Shelagh and her
husband Mick and their children Ruth, she’s five and Rachel, who’s two, are living with us as
well. At least until the repairs to their house are finished.
It is a bit noisy at times, and it certainly is crowded, but I don’t mind that. I’ve always grown up
with lots of people around me. It makes me feel secure to know there’s always someone around,
if I need help. All my brothers and sisters say the same. It’s great having the little ones about the
house, too. They’re a lot of fun.

True or False
31 The family is unusually large.
32 There are six children.
33 Four of them are twins.
34 Shelagh’s family don’t normally live there.
35 The noise is annoying.

W RITING
Write three messages.
1. To your flatmate telling him/her that you forgot to buy milk, and they will have to go to the
shop. Apologise.
2. To a friend at college. Ask to phone you if they can play tennis with you. Suggest a time and
day.
3. To your brother/sister. You want to meet for lunch so you can talk about plans for your
mother’s birthday. Suggest a day and a place.
