History of Information Security

Information security has evolved significantly over the years, adapting to changes in technology, threats, and regulatory
environments. Here's a brief historical overview:
1.Pre-Computer Era (Ancient Times - 20th Century): The protection of sensitive information has always been a concern
throughout human history. Methods such as encryption, cryptography, and physical security measures were used to safeguard
important messages and documents.
2.Early Computer Era (1940s - 1970s): With the advent of computers, the focus shifted to securing electronic data. Early
security measures included physical security (locking computers in secure rooms), user authentication (passwords), and
discretionary access controls (restricting access based on user identity).
3.Mainframe and Mini Computer Era (1960s - 1980s): As computing became more centralized with mainframe and mini
computers, organizations began to implement more sophisticated security measures. Access control lists, audit trails, and
encryption techniques were developed to protect data.
4.PC and Network Era (1980s - 1990s): The proliferation of personal computers and interconnected networks introduced
new security challenges. Viruses, worms, and other forms of malware emerged, prompting the development of antivirus
software and firewalls. Public-key cryptography and secure communication protocols also became more prevalent.
5. Internet Age (1990s - Present): The widespread adoption of the internet brought about unprecedented opportunities for
communication and commerce, but also introduced new security threats. Cyberattacks such as hacking, phishing, and
denial-of-service attacks became more common. Security technologies such as intrusion detection/prevention systems,
encryption standards (e.g., SSL/TLS), and multifactor authentication were developed to mitigate these threats.
6. Mobile and Cloud Computing Era (2000s - Present): The rise of mobile devices and cloud computing further expanded
the attack surface for cyber threats. Mobile malware, data breaches, and insider threats became major concerns for
organizations. Security measures such as mobile device management (MDM), endpoint security solutions, and cloud
security platforms were developed to address these challenges.
7. Big Data and IoT Era (2010s - Present): The proliferation of big data analytics and internet of things (IoT) devices
introduced new security considerations. Issues such as data privacy, data leakage, and IoT botnets have become prominent.
Security solutions such as data loss prevention (DLP), identity and access management (IAM), and IoT security frameworks
are being adopted to protect against these threats.
Throughout its history, information security has evolved from simple encryption techniques to a complex ecosystem of
technologies, processes, and regulations aimed at protecting sensitive data and mitigating cyber threats. The field continues
to evolve rapidly as new technologies emerge and cyber adversaries become more sophisticated.
Key Information Security Concepts

• Access—A subject or object’s ability to use, manipulate, modify, or affect another subject or object. Authorized
users have legal access to a system, whereas hackers must gain illegal access to a system. Access controls
regulate this ability.

• Asset—The organizational resource that is being protected. An asset can be logical, such as a Web site, software
information, or data; or an asset can be physical, such as a person, computer system, hardware, or other
tangible object. Assets, particularly information assets, are the focus of what security efforts are attempting
to protect.
• Attack
 An intentional or unintentional act that can damage or otherwise compromise information and the systems that
support it.
 Attacks can be active or passive, intentional or unintentional, and direct or indirect.
 Someone who casually reads sensitive information not intended for his or her use is committing a passive attack.
 A hacker attempting to break into an information system is an intentional attack.
 A lightning strike that causes a building fire is an unintentional attack.
 A direct attack is perpetrated by a hacker using a PC to break into a system.
 An indirect attack is a hacker compromising a system and using it to attack other systems—for example, as part of a
botnet (slang for robot network).
 This group of compromised computers, running software of the attacker’s choosing, can operate autonomously or
under the attacker’s direct control to attack systems and steal user information or conduct distributed denial-of-
service attacks.
 Direct attacks originate from the threat itself. Indirect attacks originate from a compromised system or resource that
is malfunctioning or working under the control of a threat.
Control, safeguard, or countermeasure—Security mechanisms, policies, or procedures that can successfully
counter attacks, reduce risk, resolve vulnerabilities, and otherwise improve security within an organization.

• Exploit—A technique used to compromise a system. This term can be a verb or a noun. Threat agents may attempt to
exploit a system or other information asset by using it illegally for their personal gain. Or, an exploit can be a documented
process to take advantage of a vulnerability or exposure, usually in software, that is either inherent in the software or created
by the attacker. Exploits make use of existing software tools or custom-made software components.

• Exposure—A condition or state of being exposed; in information security, exposure exists when a vulnerability is known
to an attacker.
• Loss—A single instance of an information asset suffering damage or destruction, unintended or unauthorized modification
or disclosure, or denial of use. When an organization’s information is stolen, it has suffered a loss.


• Protection profile or security posture—The entire set of controls and safeguards—including policy, education, training
and awareness, and technology—that the organization implements to protect the asset. The terms are sometimes used
interchangeably with the term security program, although a security program often comprises managerial aspects of security,
including planning, personnel, and subordinate programs.

Risk—The probability of an unwanted occurrence, such as an adverse event or loss. Organizations must minimize risk to
match their risk appetite—the quantity and nature of risk they are willing to accept.

• Subjects and objects of attack—A computer can be either the subject of an attack—an agent entity used to conduct the
attack—or the object of an attack: the target entity.

• Threat—Any event or circumstance that has the potential to adversely affect operations and assets. The term threat source
is commonly used interchangeably with the more generic term threat. The two terms are technically distinct, but to simplify
discussion, the text will continue to use the term threat to describe threat sources.

• Threat agent—The specific instance or a component of a threat.


• Threat event—An occurrence of an event caused by a threat agent. An example of a threat event might be damage
caused by a storm. This term is commonly used interchangeably with the term attack.

• Threat source—A category of objects, people, or other entities that represents the origin of danger to an asset—in other
words, a category of threat agents. Threat sources are always present and can be purposeful or undirected.

• Vulnerability—A potential weakness in an asset or its defensive control system(s). Some examples of vulnerabilities
are a flaw in a software package, an unprotected system port, and an unlocked door. Some well-known vulnerabilities
have been examined, documented, and published; others remain latent (or undiscovered).
Critical Characteristics of Information

• The value of information comes from the characteristics it possesses.


• When a characteristic of information changes, the value of that information either increases or, more commonly,
decreases.
• Some characteristics affect information’s value to users more than others, depending on circumstances. For example,
timeliness of information can be a critical factor because information loses much or all of its value when delivered too
late.
• Though information security professionals and end users share an understanding of the characteristics of information,
tensions can arise when the need to secure information from threats conflicts with the end users’ need for unhindered
access to it.
• For instance, end users may perceive two-factor authentication in their login—which requires an acknowledgment
notification on their smartphone—to be an unnecessary annoyance.
• Information security professionals, however, may consider two-factor authentication necessary to ensure that only
authorized users access the organization’s systems and data.
Confidentiality
• An attribute of information that describes how data is protected from disclosure or exposure to unauthorized individuals
or systems.
• Confidentiality ensures that only users with the rights, privileges, and need to access information are able to do so.
When unauthorized individuals or systems view information, its confidentiality is breached.
• Confidentiality, like most characteristics of information, is interdependent with other characteristics and is closely
related to the characteristic known as privacy
• The value of confidentiality is especially high for personal information about employees, customers, or patients.
• People who transact with an organization expect that their personal information will remain confidential, whether the
organization is a federal agency, such as the Internal Revenue Service, a healthcare facility, or a business.
• Problems arise when companies disclose confidential information.
• Sometimes this disclosure is intentional, but disclosure of confidential information also happens by mistake—for
example, when confidential information is mistakenly e-mailed to someone outside the organization rather than to
someone inside it.
personally identifiable information (PII)
• Information about a person’s history, background, and attributes that can be used to commit identity theft; typically
includes a person’s name, address, Social Security number, family information, employment history, and financial
information.

Integrity
• An attribute of information that describes how data is whole, complete, and uncorrupted.
• Information has integrity when it is in its expected state and can be trusted.
• The integrity of information is threatened when it is exposed to corruption, damage, destruction, or other disruption of its
authentic state.
• Corruption can occur while information is being stored or transmitted. Many computer viruses and worms are designed
with the explicit purpose of corrupting data.
Availability
Availability enables authorized users—people or computer systems—to access information without interference or
obstruction and to receive it in the required format.

Accuracy
Information has accuracy when it is free from mistakes or errors and has the value that the end user expects. If information
has been intentionally or unintentionally modified, it is no longer accurate.

Authenticity
Information is authentic when it is in the same state in which it was created, placed, stored, or transferred.

Utility
The utility of information is its usefulness. In other words, information has value when it can serve a purpose. If information
is available but is not in a meaningful format to the end user, it is not useful.
The CIA traid

The CIA triad is a fundamental concept in information security that stands for Confidentiality, Integrity, and Availability. It
forms the cornerstone of designing and implementing robust security measures for protecting sensitive information. Here's
an overview of each component:

Confidentiality:
 Confidentiality ensures that information is only accessible to authorized individuals or entities.
 This means that sensitive data remains private and protected from unauthorized access, disclosure, or interception.
 Measures to enforce confidentiality include encryption, access controls, data classification, and secure
communication protocols.
 For example, encrypting sensitive data stored in databases or transmitted over networks helps prevent unauthorized
parties from reading or tampering with the information.
Integrity:
 Integrity ensures that data remains accurate, consistent, and trustworthy throughout its lifecycle.
 This means that data cannot be modified, altered, or corrupted by unauthorized parties without detection.
 Measures to enforce integrity include data validation, checksums, digital signatures, and access controls.
 For example, implementing checksums or digital signatures can help verify the integrity of files or messages, ensuring
that they have not been tampered with during transit or storage.

Availability:
 Availability ensures that information and resources are accessible and usable by authorized users when needed.
 This means that systems and services must be resilient to disruptions, such as hardware failures, software errors, or
cyberattacks, to ensure continuous operation.
 Measures to ensure availability include redundancy, fault tolerance, disaster recovery planning, and denial-of-service
(DoS) mitigation techniques.
 For example, implementing redundant servers or backup systems can help ensure that critical services remain available
even in the event of hardware failures or cyberattacks.
CNSS Security Model
The CNSS (Committee on National Security Systems) model is a framework used by the U.S. government to guide the
implementation of information security policies and practices within national security systems. It provides a structured
approach for organizations to assess, categorize, and protect sensitive information based on its importance and impact on
national security.

McCumber Cube: A graphical representation of the architectural approach widely used in computer and information
security; commonly shown as a cube composed of 3x3x3 cells, similar to a Rubik’s Cube.

 The model, which was created by John McCumber in 1991, provides a graphical representation of the architectural
approach widely used in computer and information security; it is now known as the McCumber Cube.
 As shown in Figure 1-9, the McCumber Cube shows three dimensions.
 When extrapolated, the three dimensions of each axis become a 3x3x3 cube with 27 cells representing areas that must
be addressed to secure today’s information systems.
 To ensure comprehensive system security, each of the 27 areas must be properly addressed during the security process.
 For example, the intersection of technology, integrity, and storage requires a set of controls or safeguards that address the
need to use technology to protect the integrity of information while in storage.
 One such control might be a system for detecting host intrusion that protects the integrity of information by alerting
security administrators to the potential modification of a critical file.
Components of an Information System

Information system (IS) The entire set of software, hardware, data, people, procedures, and networks that enable the use
of information resources in the organization.

 As shown in Figure 1-10, an information system (IS) is much more than computer hardware; it is the entire set of
people, procedures, and technology that enable business to use information.
 The six critical components of hardware, software, networks, people, procedures, and data enable information to be
input, processed, output, and stored. Each of these IS components has its own strengths and weaknesses, as well as its
own characteristics and uses.
 Each component of the IS also has its own security requirements.
Hardware: Hardware components include physical devices such as computers, servers, network infrastructure (routers,
switches), storage devices (hard drives, SSDs), peripherals (printers, scanners), and mobile devices (smartphones, tablets).
These components provide the computing power and resources necessary to process and store data.

Software: Software components include applications, operating systems, databases, and middleware that enable users to
perform specific tasks and interact with the hardware. Applications range from productivity software (word processors,
spreadsheets) to specialized business software (enterprise resource planning, customer relationship management). Operating
systems manage hardware resources and provide a platform for running applications, while databases store and organize
structured data.

Data: Data is raw facts, figures, and observations that are collected and processed by the information system. It can be
categorized into structured data (organized in a predefined format, such as tables in a database), unstructured data (not
organized in a predefined manner, such as text documents or multimedia files), and semi-structured data (partially
organized, such as XML files). Data is the foundation of an information system and is used to generate information for
decision-making and analysis.
People: People are the users, administrators, developers, and other stakeholders who interact with the information system.
Users input data, retrieve information, and perform tasks using software applications and interfaces. Administrators manage
and maintain the hardware, software, and data infrastructure. Developers design, develop, and maintain software
applications and systems. Effective training, communication, and collaboration among people are essential for the success
of an information system.

Procedures: Procedures are the rules, guidelines, policies, and protocols that govern how the information system is used
and managed. They define the workflows, processes, and best practices for collecting, processing, storing, and
disseminating data. Procedures ensure consistency, accuracy, and security in the operation of the information system.
Examples of procedures include data entry guidelines, backup and recovery procedures, security policies, and change
management processes.
Networks: Networks facilitate communication and data exchange between different components of the information system,
as well as with external systems and users. They consist of interconnected devices (computers, servers, routers) and
communication protocols (TCP/IP, HTTP) that enable data transmission and connectivity. Networks can be local area
networks (LANs) within a single location, wide area networks (WANs) connecting multiple locations, or the internet
connecting global networks.

These components work together to collect, process, store, and disseminate data within an organization, supporting its
operations, decision-making, and strategic goals. Effective management and integration of these components are essential
for the efficient and secure operation of the information system.
Security Threats
A security threat refers to any potential danger or risk to the confidentiality, integrity, or availability of information or
information systems. These threats can arise from various sources, including malicious actors, technical vulnerabilities,
human errors, natural disasters, and other unforeseen events.

Classification and common types of threats

Security threats can be classified into several categories based on their nature, origin, and impact on information security.
Here are some common classifications and types of security threats:

Malware Threats:
Malware, short for malicious software, refers to any intrusive software developed by cybercriminals (often
called hackers) to steal data and damage or destroy computers and computer systems. Examples of common
malware include viruses, worms, Trojan viruses, spyware, adware, and ransomware
 Viruses: Malicious software that infects files or programs and spreads to other systems when the infected files are
executed.
 Worms: Self-replicating malware that spreads across networks without user intervention, exploiting
vulnerabilities in operating systems or applications.
 Trojans: Malware disguised as legitimate software to trick users into installing and executing malicious code, often
used to steal sensitive information or provide backdoor access to attackers.
 Ransomware: Malware that encrypts files or locks down systems, demanding ransom payments from victims in
exchange for decryption keys or restored access.

Network-Based Threats:

 Denial-of-Service (DoS) Attacks: Attempts to disrupt or overload network resources, services, or applications by
flooding them with excessive traffic or requests, rendering them unavailable to legitimate users.
 Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) Attacks: Coordinated attacks involving multiple compromised devices (botnets)
to launch simultaneous DoS attacks from different locations, amplifying their impact and making mitigation more
challenging.
 Man-in-the-Middle (MitM) Attacks: Interception of communication between two parties to eavesdrop on or modify
data exchanged between them, often used to steal sensitive information or inject malicious content.
Social Engineering Attacks:
 Phishing: Fraudulent attempts to trick individuals into disclosing sensitive information, such as login credentials,
financial details, or personal data, through deceptive emails, messages, or websites.
 Spear Phishing: Targeted phishing attacks that tailor messages to specific individuals or organizations, often using
personal information or social engineering techniques to increase credibility and likelihood of success.
 Baiting: Offering something enticing (e.g., free software, USB drives) to lure users into downloading malware or
disclosing sensitive information.
A USB drive carrying a malicious payload and left in a lobby or a parking lot is an example of baiting: the attacker
hopes someone's curiosity will lead them to plug the USB drive into a device, at which point the malware it carries can
be installed.

Insider Threats:

 Malicious Insiders: Individuals within an organization who misuse their access privileges or intentionally violate
security policies to cause harm, such as stealing data, sabotaging systems, or conducting fraud.
 Negligent Insiders: Employees or contractors who inadvertently compromise security through careless actions, such as
clicking on malicious links, sharing passwords, or mishandling sensitive information.
Physical Threats:

 Theft: Unauthorized access or removal of physical assets, such as laptops, mobile devices, or storage media, containing
sensitive information.
 Vandalism: Deliberate destruction or damage to hardware, infrastructure, or facilities, disrupting operations and causing
financial losses.

Web-Based Threats:
 SQL Injection: Exploiting vulnerabilities in web applications to inject malicious SQL code, allowing attackers to access,
modify, or delete data stored in databases.
 Cross-Site Scripting (XSS): Injecting malicious scripts into web pages viewed by other users, often used to steal session
cookies, redirect users to phishing sites, or deface websites.
Security Policies

Security policies are a set of guidelines, rules, procedures, and best practices established by an organization to ensure the
confidentiality, integrity, and availability of its information assets and resources. These policies define the framework for
managing and implementing security controls, procedures, and technologies to protect against various security threats and
risks. Here are some key components and types of security policies:

Acceptable Use Policy (AUP):


 AUP outlines the acceptable and prohibited uses of an organization's information systems, networks, and resources by
employees, contractors, and other authorized users.
 It defines rules for accessing, sharing, and using company-owned devices, networks, and data, as well as guidelines for
acceptable behavior and consequences for policy violations.
Access Control Policy:
 Access control policy defines the rules and procedures for granting, revoking, and managing user access to information
systems, applications, and data.
 It specifies the types of user accounts, authentication methods, authorization levels, and access privileges based on job
roles, responsibilities, and least privilege principles.

Data Classification Policy:


 Data classification policy categorizes and classifies information assets based on their sensitivity, criticality, and regulatory
requirements.
 It defines the criteria and procedures for labeling, handling, storing, transmitting, and disposing of different types of data
(e.g., confidential, sensitive, public) to ensure appropriate protection and compliance with data protection laws and
regulations.
Information Security Policy:
 Information security policy provides an overarching framework for managing and safeguarding the organization's
information assets and resources.
 It outlines the goals, objectives, principles, responsibilities, and requirements for protecting against various security
threats, such as malware, unauthorized access, data breaches, and insider threats.
 It may also address areas such as risk management, incident response, business continuity, and compliance with relevant
standards and regulations.

Network Security Policy:


 Network security policy defines the rules, configurations, and controls for securing the organization's network
infrastructure, devices, and communication channels.
 It specifies requirements for network segmentation, firewalls, intrusion detection/prevention systems, encryption, remote
access, wireless security, and other measures to protect against unauthorized access, interception, and data breaches.
Physical Security Policy:
 Physical security policy establishes guidelines and controls for protecting the organization's physical assets, facilities,
and resources from unauthorized access, theft, vandalism, and natural disasters.
 It covers areas such as access control, surveillance, environmental controls, visitor management, and emergency
response to ensure the safety and security of personnel and assets.

Incident Response Policy:


 Incident response policy outlines the procedures, roles, and responsibilities for detecting, assessing, containing, and
responding to security incidents and breaches.
 It defines the steps for reporting incidents, activating response teams, preserving evidence, mitigating impacts, restoring
services, and communicating with stakeholders to minimize damage and recover from security incidents effectively.
Security Mechanisms

Security mechanisms are technical controls, tools, and measures implemented within information systems to protect against
security threats and enforce security policies. These mechanisms work together to safeguard data, ensure system integrity,
authenticate users, control access, and detect and respond to security incidents. Here are some common types of security
mechanisms:

Encryption:
 Encryption is the process of converting plaintext data into ciphertext using cryptographic algorithms and keys.
 It protects data confidentiality by making it unreadable to unauthorized users or attackers.
 Encryption mechanisms can be applied to data at rest (stored on storage devices), data in transit (transmitted over
networks), and data in use (processed by applications).
Access Control: Access control mechanisms restrict and manage user access to information systems, resources, and data
based on authentication, authorization, and accountability principles. They include:

 Authentication: Verifying the identity of users or entities accessing the system, typically through credentials such
as usernames, passwords, biometrics, smart cards, or multi-factor authentication methods.
 Authorization: Determining the actions, operations, or resources that authenticated users are allowed to access,
based on their roles, permissions, and privileges.
 Accountability: Logging and auditing user activities, access attempts, and system events to track and monitor
compliance with security policies, detect unauthorized activities, and support forensic investigations.
Firewalls:
 Firewalls are network security devices or software programs that monitor and filter incoming and outgoing network
traffic based on predefined security rules and policies.
 They act as barriers between internal networks (e.g., corporate intranet) and external networks (e.g., the internet) to
prevent unauthorized access, block malicious traffic, and enforce security policies.

Intrusion Detection and Prevention Systems (IDPS):


 IDPS are security tools and technologies designed to detect and mitigate suspicious or malicious activities, anomalies, and
threats within information systems and networks.
 They analyze network traffic, system logs, and behavior patterns to identify potential security incidents, such as
unauthorized access attempts, malware infections, or denial-of-service attacks, and trigger alerts or automated responses
to mitigate risks.
Vulnerability Management:
Vulnerability management mechanisms identify, assess, prioritize, and remediate security vulnerabilities and weaknesses
within information systems, applications, and infrastructure. They include:

 Vulnerability Scanning: Automated tools and scanners that scan networks, systems, and applications for known
vulnerabilities, misconfigurations, or security weaknesses.
 Patch Management: Procedures and tools for installing, updating, and maintaining security patches, software
updates, and firmware upgrades to address known vulnerabilities and reduce the attack surface.
Secure Communication Protocols:
 Secure communication protocols ensure the confidentiality, integrity, and authenticity of data transmitted over
networks by encrypting data, authenticating endpoints, and preventing eavesdropping, tampering, or interception.
 Examples include Transport Layer Security (TLS), Secure Sockets Layer (SSL), Virtual Private Network (VPN), and
Secure Shell (SSH).

Endpoint Security:
 Endpoint security mechanisms protect individual devices (endpoints) such as desktops, laptops, smartphones, and
tablets from malware, unauthorized access, and data breaches.
 They include antivirus/antimalware software, host-based firewalls, endpoint detection and response (EDR) tools,
mobile device management (MDM) solutions, and data loss prevention (DLP) technologies.
Secure Coding Practices:
 Secure coding practices involve writing and developing software applications with security in mind to prevent common
vulnerabilities and weaknesses that can be exploited by attackers.
 This includes following secure coding standards, using secure development frameworks and libraries, input validation,
output encoding, and implementing secure coding guidelines for developers.
Role of assumptions and thrust in security and protection
Assumptions and trust play crucial roles in the field of security and protection, shaping how security measures are designed,
implemented, and evaluated. Here's how assumptions and trust influence security practices:

Assumptions:

 Threat Modeling: Security professionals often make assumptions about potential threats, vulnerabilities, and attacker
capabilities when designing security measures. These assumptions help inform threat modeling exercises, risk
assessments, and security planning activities, allowing organizations to anticipate and prioritize security controls and
countermeasures.
 Risk Management: Assumptions about the likelihood and impact of security incidents, as well as the effectiveness of
security controls, are used to assess and manage risks within organizations. Risk assessments rely on assumptions about
threat actors, attack vectors, and system vulnerabilities to identify and mitigate potential security risks.
Security Architecture: Assumptions about the security properties of systems, networks, and applications influence the
design and architecture of security controls and mechanisms. Assumptions may include trust boundaries, access control
models, data flows, and security boundaries, which inform the implementation of security features and safeguards.

Trust:
 Trust Relationships: Security relies on trust relationships between users, systems, devices, and entities within an
organization and across networks. Trust is established through authentication, authorization, and validation mechanisms,
allowing users and systems to interact securely and exchange information with confidence.

 Third-Party Trust: Organizations often rely on third-party products, services, and vendors for security solutions,
infrastructure, and outsourcing arrangements. Trust in third parties is established through due diligence, vendor
assessments, contractual agreements, and compliance certifications to ensure that security requirements are met and risks
are managed effectively.
 Human Factors: Trust in employees, contractors, and insiders is essential for maintaining security within organizations.
Trustworthy behavior, adherence to security policies, and awareness of security best practices help foster a culture of
security and reduce the risk of insider threats, human errors, and social engineering attacks.

• While assumptions and trust are important in security and protection, it's essential to validate and verify them through
rigorous testing, monitoring, and verification processes.
• Security professionals should regularly review and update assumptions based on new information, threat intelligence,
and changes in the threat landscape.
