Around the Coast of Ecuador

Driving along the coastal region in Ecuador, it was one of the most exciting experiences of
my life. This route is called ¨Ruta del Spondylus¨. Here are numerous beautiful beaches,
lovely towns, different cultures and several ecosystems. The major beach towns along the
Ecuadorian coast that you can visit are: Salinas, considered by many to be Ecuador’ best
beach resort; Montañita, famous for its surfing and hippie culture; or the large commercial
and fishing port city of Manta.
Today I am going to talk about the last time I went to Montañita. This place is a small
commune and beach located in the province of Santa Elena in Ecuador. On the holiday of
October 9, my friends and I went to this incredible and stunning beach in Ecuador. We had
planned this trip 2 months ago. We went in the van of one of my friends. I had gone to
Montañita twice with my family but in my experience this place is not to go with your
parents. We left from Cuenca to Montañita at 6 am. It was an amazing and funny trio because
along the way we had fun singing and contemplating the wonderful landscapes that Ecuador
has. above all, on this trip we crossed from the mountains to the coast. During the route we
were able to contemplate the Pacific Ocean, the sea, the incredible waves, we passed through
wonderful towns and even we saw the waves because it was whale mating season - it was the
experience of a life.
When we finally arrived in Montañita we headed to Selina hotel, we had already booked the
hotel before. Hotels here are very picturesque and affordable.
This one was average, not impressive, but it had a pool, bar and games area. The only
incredible thing was that the hotel had direct access to the beach. We stayed there all
weekend. The first day we enjoyed the beach, we ate lunch. The cuisine there was
unbelievable especially its ceviches are very delicious. My favorite is seafood. There are a lot
of ¨carretas de comida¨ these are like food carts with a lot of yummy dishes. There are many
restaurants too, but I prefer these places because they are cheap too. The weather was very
hot, so we spent the rest of the day sunbathing and drinking beer because the weather was
perfect.

Montañita has an amazing nightlife, there are great parties at night and you could see people
dancing in the discos and even on the beach, because Montañita is the favorite destination for
foreigners, so we can meet people from different countries. That night we met 2 foreigners
from Germany, they were very friendly. Later we went dancing and visited “Alcatraz” , a
night club which looked like a real jail. The entry was free until 11:00 pm. The party for us
ended at 6 am and we returned to the hotel to rest.

The next day my best friend and I took surfing lessons because the rest of my friends were
hungover. As I said before, Montañita is a town well known for its surfing, with waves for
beginners to waves for professional surfers, the waves there are mind-blowing. The class cost
20 dollars and they taught us the basic instructions to be able to surf. It was difficult but in the
end I was able to get on the surfboard.

Finally we returned to Cuenca at 6pm, without first buying some souvenirs. There are lots of
Handicraft shops, where you can buy beautiful crafts.
I had a great time with my friends
