RCHS helps 335 young pupils practise oral hygiene, prevent tooth decay

RCHS conducted a fluoride application and dental care education project for preparatory school pupils of Dona Juana Elementary School in Barangay Holy Spirit on November 9, 2011. The team led by Rtn Dr Marylene Martinez applied fluoride agents to the teeth of 335 kindergarten pupils, done in two (2) batches, one in the morning and another in the afternoon. Due to limited space in the school, the procedure was done per class of about 25 children. There were eight (8) classes in the morning, and another eight in the afternoon. Before the fluoride application, the children listened to a short lecture by Rtn Marlene on the proper way of brushing their teeth. The children were also given toothbrush and toothpaste packages, generously provided by Colgate-Palmolive Philippines Inc. The team was prepared to cater to 400 kids; however, some were absent for one reason or another. The topical fluorides were applied to the enamel surface of the teeth of the pupils to reduce the incidence of dental decay. Not all the children were happy about the procedure; some cried, while some simply did not want to open their mouths. Dr Marlene prescribed medication for a child found to have swollen gums. Assisting Rtn Dr Marlene in the fluoridization were President Ped, Treasurer Marcia, Rotarian Peth, associate members Malou, Liza and Neng as well as Rotaractors and Interactors led by PE Kevin and Pres Harold, respectively. Thanks to all those who lent their time and effort in this worthy project. Thanks to Mrs Emely Pelobello, principal of Dona Juana Elementary School, for providing morning and afternoon snacks to all the volunteers, and to the kindergarten teachers for their assistance. RCHS especially thanks Colgate-Palmolive for providing the toothbrushes and toothpastes for the children. Thirteen Rotaractors and Interactors of Holy Spirit cheerfully prepared the 400 dental packs on Saturday night at the Salvador residence, before the Wednesday event with the tots in school.

RC Holy Spirit participates in testimonial program to honour Rotary Foundation donors

The Rotary Foundation Testimonial Dinner last November 11, 2011 at Crowne Plaza Galleria was a special night as the RI District 3780 leadership honoured 18 Major Donors, 212 Paul Harris Fellows, 67 Sustaining Members, 17 EREY Clubs and four 100% Contributing Clubs for RY 2011-12. The level of contributions achieved so far has already surpassed the records set in prior Rotary years, according to Lieutenant Governor Boone Ongchoco, Chairman of the District Annual Giving Committee. The night was made even more special with the presence of Past Rotary International President Wilfrid Wilf Wilkinson, incoming Chairman of The Rotary Foundation Trustees. In his message, PRIP Wilf Wilkinson stressed the goals of The Rotary Foundation, including polio eradication, the Future Vision Plan as guide for allocating foundation funds most effectively, and focus on getting support for the Annual Programs Fund. Silver President Ped is one of the Paul Harris Fellows recognized for their contribution to the TRF for RY 2011-12. Treasurer Marcia is recipient of PDG Danny Faustos contribution for RY 2011-12. PDG Danny is one of 18 distinguished Rotarians recognized as Major Donor. (Major Donors are those who have contributed at least $10,000 to the Rotary Foundation.) Our CP Nides Respicio is among the Sustaining Members cited. Also presented and inducted during the evening are the 46 charter members of District 3780 Paul Harris Society led by PDG Oscar Inocentes who pledged to contribute $1000 annually to the Foundation. The testimonial dinner was hosted by RC Kamuning West, with Assistant Governor Rencie Padernal as Chairman of the Testimonial Dinner event. AG Rencie, who is chair of the District Service Projects Committee, has been mentioned for being the districts largest contributor to the foundation so far this year. Close to 300 Rotarians, guests and dignitaries in the Rotary world graced the memorable event. RC Holy Spirit was represented by President Ped, Treasurer Marcia, Admin Chair Ric, and Rtn. Peth, spouse of DGN Francis Rivera.

TRF enjoys high ratings from charity watchdogs

By Paul Engleman Rotary International News -- 14 November 2011

Rotarians can be confident that their contributions to The Rotary Foundation are being well spent. The Foundation has earned a grade of A+ from the American Institute of Philanthropy, a top rating of four stars from Charity Navigator, and full accreditation from the Wise Giving Alliance of the Better Business Bureau. Only 2.3 percent of Foundation funding goes to administrative expenses, and 7.3 percent goes to fundraising. The Foundation focuses more than 90 percent of its spending on programs, far exceeding the threshold of 75 percent that independent charity-rating services view as a measure of high efficiency. That comes as no surprise to Foundation Trustee Steve Brown, who says the organizations grant application and review process contains the safeguards necessary to ensure that funds are used wisely. Typically, Brown explains, international projects funded by the Foundation involve a sponsor club or district, which partners with an on-site host club or district. Funding may go through the sponsor or host. To implement a project, clubs must spell out what they plan on doing, how they plan on doing it, and what Rotarians involvement will be. All projects require a detailed budget and often additional supporting documentation before receiving Foundation approval. Once an approved project is funded, Brown says, a detailed progress report must be presented within one year. The reporting includes verification of what has happened (usually with photos) and requires copies of bank statements showing the flow of funds. The presidents of either the host or sponsor club must sign off on the report. The Foundation has a stewardship committee that can review a project and impose a resolution if issues occur. If money was improperly spent, a club can be asked to return funds or even have its membership in Rotary International terminated.

You dont want to have everything controlled from Evanston, Brown says. We probably have more complaints about our rigorous stewardship than applause for it. But 99 percent of the time, things go the way we expect.

RI Presidents November Message

My dear brothers and sisters in Rotary,
In 1885, the London Times ran a series of editorials honoring the 100th birthday of Sir Moses Montefiore, the British financier and philanthropist knighted by Queen Victoria. The editorials commented on his honesty, his generosity, and his willingness to come to the aid of anyone in need. One story was particularly telling. Someone once asked Sir Moses, one of the wealthiest men of his era, how much he was worth. In the face of such an ill -mannered inquiry, he merely paused for a moments reflection before naming a figure one that fell far short of his questioners expectations. Naturally, it was met with an objection; surely he must be worth 10 times as much! Sir Moses merely smiled. Young man, he replied, you didnt ask me how much I own. You asked me how much I am worth. So I calculated how much I have given to charity this year, and that is the number I gave you. You see, in life we are worth only what we are willing to share with others. When we calculate our own worth, do we think about it in terms of what we have, or how we use it? When we say that all human beings are of equal worth, do our actions follow our words? I believe that being a Rotarian means looking at all of our resources differently. What is the most good that we could choose to do with what we have? What are the choices that will ultimately leave us the richest? In Rotary, we are all aware of the great needs in so many parts of our world. And we all know how much we can do to help through our Rotary Foundation. We can change lives, we can restore hope, we can build futures if we choose to. In life, everything is a choice. We can choose to close our eyes to the needs of others, to keep what we have for ourselves, to declare the problems of others to be theirs alone. Or we can choose to look past distance, past color, past language and dress and culture, and see that people everywhere are just like us and then refuse to walk away. Kalyan Banerjee President, Rotary International

Rotarians unwind, then rewind for service

October 19, 2011 was meant to be a regular fellowship night. It, however, turned out to be a special fellowship night for three (3) reasons: it was a belated celebration of Rtn Peths birthday last October 16; our AG Rose Imperial came and donated P5,000 to the Club; our friends from sister club RC Marikina North District 3800 also came. We turned over to President Terry and VP Lina of RCMN 50 sets of towels, laundry detergent, toothbrush and toothpaste for the prisoners in Montalban whose prison cells were flooded during the last typhoon. Working together with the Sta Cecilia Parish Church and Parochial School, RCMN asked for our assistance in providing toiletries to 265 needy prisoners located in Dela Costa, Montalban, Rizal in a mission scheduled last October 23, 2011. In response to our sister clubs request, Rtn Nonoy Solidum donated 50 bath towels while the Club donated detergents, toothbrushes and toothpaste for 50. All had a great time with the jokes and funny stories shared by CP Nides, IPP Dodgie, Presidents Ped and Terry, punctuated by the trademark performance of CP Nides on his harmonica. In the absence of a karaoke, the group contented themselves with singing a cappella, and everyone was game contributing a song number or two.
