Fort Cornwallis is a good place to start off a day of visiting the

old historic buildings of Georgetown. The fort is built on the
site where the British first landed in Pulau Pinang to take
possession of the island in 1786. The first structure to be built
was a star-shaped simple stockade made of nibung palm
trunks and named after the then Governor-General of Bengal,
Charles Cornwallis. In 1793 the fort was rebuilt using bricks at
a cost of 67,000 Spanish Dollars.
