PROPERTY FROM
A PRIVATE COLLECTION,
WASHINGTON, D.C.
LOTS 1–1 1

The items featured as lots 1-11 provide a window into

an impressive collection of jewels acquired over several
decades by a Washington, D.C.-area real estate developer
and his beloved wife. Here we find some of the most
important David Webb pieces that complemented a
jewelry collection rich with dazzling, diamond-set looks
for frequent formal events.
Born in the late 1890s, the collector emigrated with
his family to the United States in the early 1900s, and
ultimately settled in the Washington, D.C. area. With his
wife, a native Washingtonian, he made frequent trips to
Palm Beach and New York City where they often visited
the studio of David Webb and developed an enduring
friendship with the designer. This close relationship
granted them access not only to Webb’s most iconic
2
designs, but also to one-of-a-kind creations spanning the
1950s to the 1980s.
The collection reflects lives both well-lived and
stylish, filled with exciting travel, glamorous entertaining,
generous philanthropy, and most importantly, cherished
time with family. Sotheby’s is honored to present these
jewels which, for the past four decades, have remained
locked away and untouched.

Sotheby’s is honored to offer a selection of jewels from the Estate of

Eleanor de Limur, now property of descendants Christina, Charles and
Philip de Limur, pieces of timeless style and impeccable workmanship
that recall the family’s fabled histories. These stunning Cartier Art Deco
diamond jewels evoke the glamour, romance and international interest
of the courtship in Paris in the 1920s and subsequent marriage of the
distinguished French Count André de Limur to Ethel Crocker in 1917. Ethel
Mary Crocker was a descendant of the visionary Charles Crocker, one of the
‘Big Four,’ founder of the western section of the first US transcontinental 66
railroad, the Central Pacific Railroad. Crocker built a mansion in 1880
atop Nob Hill, where Grace Cathedral now sits, that was destroyed in the
1906 earthquake. Their son, Alexander Charles Crocker ‘Charlie’ de Limur
from Paris, met and married Eleanor Spreckels Walsh ‘Nonie’ while in San
Francisco. Eleanor, also a descendant of a storied family of the West, was
the great granddaughter of Claus Spreckels the ‘Sugar King’. Their union 65
brought together the three legacy families, Crocker, Spreckles and de
Limur, and with it a dazzling collection of exceptional jewels that had been
passed down through generations.

Embarking on a journey through the glamorous past, the collections

JEWELS OF HOLLYWOOD when celebrities owned – rather than borrowed – the jewels they wore
on the red carpet and on screen.
Today, in an age with a burgeoning number of media channels, it can

THE GOLDEN AGE OF GLAMOUR be easy to forget just how important and influential movie and television
stars were when entertainment choices for most of the country were
largely restricted to film, radio and a handful of television stations.
Audiences were riveted by these celebrities, who achieved a level of
fame that is rare today, due in large part to the booming popularity of TV
and the momentary escape it provided.
Their jewelry is at the same time beautiful and extremely personal –
an expression of both individual style and a celebration of life milestones,
rather than a constructed public image. It was an age before celebrity
style became heavily mediated by stylists, fashion and jewelry houses
looking to place their creations on the red carpet. These jewels reflect the
unique tastes of their owners and allow us to feel a personal connection
with artists who left an enduring mark on history and on our lives.

DIAMOND CLARITY GRADING DIAMOND COLOR GRADING

Clarity grading relates to the impurities in a diamond. All clarity grading is carried out under a 10x magnification. The more
impurities in a diamond the lower the price per carat. GIA
The top color grades, D, E, F, for a diamond is when it looks colorless against a white
D
background.
E

F
FL Flawless No blemishes or inclusions

G
IF Internally Flawless No inclusions and only insignificant blemishes. In near colorless diamonds, G, H, I, there is a slight trace of color which will not be
H apparent to the untrained eye. Stones 0.50Ct or less will look colorless.
Extremely difficult to see, visible only from the back of the stone, or
Very Very Slightly Included I
VVS1 & VVS2 small and shallow enough to be removed easily by repolishing. In
VVS2, inclusions are still very difficult to see.
J
VS1 & VS2 Very Slightly Included Still difficult to see with the untrained eye. Diamonds graded J, K, L, will have notable traces of color. Small stones in this range
K
will ’face up‘ colorless when mounted but larger stones will be tinted.
Easy (SI1) or very easy (SI2) to see with a 10x lens. When these have L
SI1 & SI2 Slightly Included been located with a 10x lens, look at the stone with the naked eye and
the inclusions can sometimes be spotted
M
Diamonds graded M-Z will display a yellowish tint even to the untrained eye.
I1, I2 & I3 Imperfect May be eye-visible face up without the aid of a lens. In I3, they may
threaten the stones durability.

Z
Z+ color grade indicates that the diamond is of fancy color and therefore fall into a
Z+ different price bracket.
