Time Division Mul plexing

Aim: To construct a two channel TDM circuit and observe the waveforms.

Components and Equipments required: CD4016, BC107 Transistor, 68K Resistor, 10k Resistor,
Dual DC source, Signal Generators, DSO, Breadboard, Connec ng wires

Theory:

Mul plexing is the method of sending several message signals over a single channel, so
that the signals can be separated at the receiver without distor on. In Time Division
Mul plexing (TDM), the input signals are sampled at regular intervals through switches and are
transmi ed to the receiver. At the receiver end, another set of switches opera ng in tandem
with the transmi er side switches are used to separate and extract the different input signals.
In two channel TDM, two signals are transmi ed using TDM. At the receiver end, output from
two switches are passed through two RC low pass filters to extract the corresponding input
signals.

In the circuit shown, CD 4016 IC is used to switch two signals for TDM. 1 Vpp 1 kHz Sine
wave is applied to Switch B input of CD 4016. And 1 Vpp 1 kHz triangular wave is applied to
Switch A input of CD 4016. W hen synchronisa on signal is at logic low, 1 Vpp 1 kHz sine signal
appears at the output and when synchronisa on signal is at logic high, 1 Vpp 1 kHz triangular
signal appears at the output. The synchroniza on signal is inverted using a transistor inverter
circuit and applied to the Control pins of Switches A and D.
CIRCUIT DIAGRAM
EXPECTED WAVEFORMS
Procedure:

1.Test all the components and probes

2.Set up the circuit as shown in figure on the breadboard
3. Feed 1 Vpp 1 kHz triangular wave and 1 Vpp 1 kHz sine wave as message signals and 10
Vpp 100 Hz square wave as synchroniza on signal
4. Observe output signal on DSO.
5. Plot the waveforms.

Result:
Two channel TDM circuit has been set up and waveforms observed.
