Q UNSEEN COMPREHENSIONS
The Spring season is liked by one and all. It is welcomed by the young and the old. It does not have the
heat of summer nor does it have the biting cold of winter. It is a season of hope and cheer. There is
freshness all around. Nature puts a new life into plants and flowers. It looks very colourful. Birds sing
merrily in the years. The air is full of fragrance. One wonders at the workmanship of God, who created
this beautiful and lovely season, Shelley said, “If winter comes, can spring be far behind.” The earth
looks beautiful like young bride.

The beginning of this fun-filled season with the sun hidden behind the grey clouds brings cheer to many
of us. Waiting eagerly to splash in the rain. Of course, not everything about rain is glamorous. Especially
when you think about endless traffic jams, the bad roads dotted with potholes, uncleared garbage and
the spate of waterborne diseases. Also, viral infections like colds and coughs make their presence felt.
Most infectious diseases prevalent in the rainy season can be prevented by simply washing our hands
regularly. Scrubbing hands regularly with water and soap can prevent us from contracting respiratory
and diarrheal diseases.
Kids have a lower level of immunity, and hence hand washing becomes a crucial part of their lifestyle.
When playing, especially during monsoon season, kids come into contact with germs and can
unknowingly become infected simply by touching their nose, eyes or mouth. The Food and Drug
Administration states that the human influenza virus can survive on surfaces for up to eight hours,
making people susceptible to catching it each time they touch the infected surface. Hence repeated
hand washing is required.
To make the best of the rainy season, we should follow some simple guidelines. First of all, if we decide
to get wet in the rain we should change into a dry set of clothes at the earliest. Also, we should keep raw
food items at bay and wash vegetables and fruits thoroughly before use. Moreover, strict kitchen

Q6 Read the following passage and answer the questions given at the end:-
Cataract is the major cause of blindness, which is also caused by damage to the cornea. It occurs more
often in old age. As one starts growing old, the lens of the eye hardens, loses its transparency and
becomes opaque. It obstructs the light rays from entering the eye.The onset of cataract blurs the vision.
Sometimes, the cataract patient sees multiple images instead of a single object image. Because of the
gradual development of cataract, the afflicted person loses his/her vision, and the world becomes dark
to him/her. The development of cataract is a complex process. However, the following factors can be
attributed to its formation. Cataract generally develops in old age but sometimes, children are born with
cataract because of hereditary defect. Eye injuries too, can cause cataracts.People exposed to sun rays
for longer periods develop cataract earlier than others. Researchers opine that the smoke inhaled while
smoking carries substances internally damaging the eyes.
Ultraviolet radiation, invisible to the human eye, is linked to skin cancer. The victim loses vision and the
world becomes dark to him.
Questions:-
(b)Why does the lens of the eye become opaque in old age?
(e)Give any two factors which are responsible for the formation of cataract.

My next pet was a pigeon, the most revolting bird to look at, with his feathers pushing through the
wrinkled scarlet skin, mixed with the horrible yellow down that covers baby pigeons and makes them
look as though they have been peroxiding their hair. Because of his repulsive and obese appearance, we
called him Quasimodo. Since he had an unorthodox upbringing, without parents to teach him,
Quasimodo became convinced that he was not a bird at all, and refused to fly. He walked everywhere.
He was always eager to join us in anything we did.He would even try to come for walks with us. So you
had to either carry him on your shoulder, which was risking an accident to your clothes, or else you let
him walk behind. If you let him walk, then you had to slow down your own pace to suit his, for should
you get too far ahead, you would hear the most frantic and imploring coos and turn around to find
Quasimodo running desperately after you.
