ABSTRACT
Our research work is a short account of how e-commerce has impacted the operations of
eSewa, a leading digital payment portal in Nepal, which allows you to make online and
offline payment to various merchants, transfer funds to various banks and many more
through online or SMS services. Our work describes about the background of eSewa
along with how e-commerce has been integrated into business operations. The impact of
e-commerce on the company's operations and how eSewa has enhanced its e-commerce
operations by implementing network infrastructure, security compliance measures, and
digital marketing strategies has been examined by the study. The study provides valuable
insights into the strategies employed by the company to achieve success in the digital
payments market. Finally, it is a form of direct payments and banking without physical
appearance at the MDA or bank through the means of electronic, interactive
communication channels and other technology infrastructure. eSewa is safer and easier
way to pay as eSewa is aimed to allow payments and money transfers to be made through
internet, all the access channels have been secured at software, hardware and network
level.

CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION
1.1 Organizational background
ESewa is a leading digital wallet and online payment service provider in Nepal. It was
founded in 2009 by a group of Nepali entrepreneurs with the aim of making digital
payments accessible to everyone in Nepal. South Asia’s first digital wallet, licensed
Payment Service Provider from Nepal Rastra Bank (Central Bank of Nepal), and an ISO
27001:2013 certified, eSewa is a subsidiary company of F1Soft International, a leading
Fine Tech company of Nepal. Team eSewa has been working tirelessly to achieve its
vision to create a cashless economy.
Since its inception, eSewa has grown rapidly and currently has more than 6 million
registered users and over 50,000 merchants on its platform. The company offers a wide
range of payment services, including mobile top-up, utility bill payments, movie ticket
bookings, online shopping, and money transfers (Khatun, 2022).
ESewa has partnered with various banks and financial institutions in Nepal to provide
seamless and secure payment services to its users. It also offers a mobile application that
can be downloaded from the Google Play Store and Apple App Store.
The company has won numerous awards and accolades for its contribution to the digital
payments landscape in Nepal. It was awarded the "Best Fintech Company" and "Best
PaymentGateway" at the 2019 South Asian Business Excellence Awards, among others.
Overall, eSewa has played a significant role in promoting digital payments in Nepal and
has become a trusted and reliable brand in the country's fintech industry. Customers can
register and get mobile mobile money account instantly, cash-into their wallet from agents
and partners banks and start making payments. Customers can use different services
provided by esewa.
Some of them are as follows:
 Mobile phone recharge and Top-up:
Users who use prepaid and postpaid NTC/Ncell/Smart cell can recharge their
balance via eSewa. DTH service providers like Dish Home and Sim TV and
internet services providers like NT ADSL, Worldlink, Subisu, Websurfer also
accepts payment through eSewa.
 Utilities bill Payments:

Customer can pay bills for electricity (NEA payment), water (khanepani payment)
and telephone (NT landlines) via eSewa) bill Payments
 Airlines/Bus ticketing:
Some airlines like Buddha air, Yeti air, Shree air and Simrik air accept payments
for online ticket purchase via eSewa. Some major multiplexes like QFX cinema,
Q’s cinemas, BigMovies, BSR movies accept online ticket booking via eSewa.
Insurance/EMI/Finance Payments
 Online product purchasing:
Various stores and shopping malls accept online payment from eSewa while
buying product online.
 Credit card Payments:
Credit card user of following banks can make credit card payment via eSewa i.e.
Nabil Bank, Global IME Bank, NMB Bank, Siddhartha Bank, Prabhu Bank,
Citizens Bank, NIC Asia Bank, Laxmi Bank, Prime Commercial Bank, Sanima

1.2 Objectives of the study
The objectives behind our study on the subject of e-commerce in e-sewa are:
 To review the e-commerce site in e-sewa.
 To analyse the business model and network security infrastructure used by e-sewa.
 To collect enough data to know about the e-sewa.
 To understand the basic requirements for opening up an e-commerce website.
 To highlight the service provided by e-sewa.
 To know how an economic website works, both on application level and physical
level.
1.3 E-commerce in business
Esewa is a popular digital wallet and payment gateway service in Nepal that provides
various financial services to businesses, using ecommerce solutions. eSewa uses
commerce solutions that enable businesses to accept online payments from customers and
process online transactions securely and efficiently.
Ecommerce has become increasingly important in the business world, and esewa

recognizes the significance of ecommerce for its customers and the economy of Nepal.
Ecommerce provides a convenient way for customers to purchase products and services
from the comfort of their own homes. With Esewa's ecommerce solutions, customers can
easily make payments using their digital wallets, making the process of online shopping
faster and more convenient. Furthermore, ecommerce enables esewa to reach a wider
audience, as they can sell its services to customers anywhere in the world. This increased
reach opens up new opportunities for esewa to expand its customer base and grow their
revenue. With the help of ecommerce, eSewa provides customers with a seamless and
personalized shopping experience. Customers can easily browse products and services,
make payments using their digital wallets, and track their orders in real-time, improving
their overall satisfaction with the purchasing process. Ecommerce can provide eSewa with
a competitive advantage over its competitors. By offering online sales and a seamless
customer experience, eSewa can differentiate itself in the market and attract more
customers.
In summary, ecommerce is important in Esewa as it provides convenience, increased
reach, cost-effectiveness, improved customer experience, and a competitive advantage for
businesses.Esewa recognizes the importance of ecommerce in today's digital economy and
has developed robust ecommerce solutions to help businesses succeed in the online
marketplace. E-sewa uses e-commerce in many of its business processes. E-sewa uses two
forms of e-commerce models,which are as follows:
1. Business to business Model (B2B Model): E-sewa has business to business model as a
primary working structure. The relationship between the e-sewa and customer and also e-
sewa Company with different business for the payment of different utility bills introduces
the B2B model in the system.
2. Business to customer model (B2C Model): E-sewa and customer deal with each other.
E-sewa creates e-sewa account to those who don’t have any bank account. User can have
either cash deposit or counter deposit. E-sewa is established to provide online payment
gateway in Nepal to customer. So, they take only few charge/no charge from customer.

1.4 Impact of e-commerce
Esewa is Nepal-based Company mainly focused on electronic payment system. It is one of

the major service provided by f1soft which is the well-known name for safer and easier
way to pay online. It offers a state-of-art payment gateway solution that incorporates some
of the latest integrated techniques developing a secured, fast, and real-time gateway. It has
been growing astrusted company because of its quality service to its customers.
Though there are others payment gateways e-sewa has become the first choice due to its
goodwill. More than twenty five thousands of customers with sixty five percent of active
customers have been benefited by its services and the number of users is increasing day by
day.
E-commerce (electronic commerce) is the buying and selling of goods and services, or the
transmitting of funds or data, over an electronic network, primarily the internet. E-
Commerce is growing at a rapid pace across the world with the penetration of smart
phones and internet across the different levels of society across the world. The growth and
its gains are already visible from the studies in developed countries, but with the business
going to developing and underdeveloped nation, we will be witnessing greater positive
results going forward. E-sewa uses an E-commerce system for a purpose as it largely
impacts the business.
The impacts of the e-commerce system on the business are as follows:
 Increased Usage: E-commerce has led to a surge in online transactions, resulting
in increased usage of eSewa. As more people turn to online shopping, they require a
secureand convenient way to make payments, and eSewa provides just that.
 Expanded Services: E-commerce has also driven the expansion of eSewa's
services. The platform now offers a wide range of services beyond just digital
payments, including online shopping, mobile top-up, bill payments, and more.
 Improved Customer Experience: E-commerce has raised the bar for customer
experience, and eSewa has responded by introducing new features and services
t h a t i m p r o v e the user experience.
 Enhanced Security: With the rise of e-commerce, the need for secure online
transactions has become more important than ever. eSewa has responded by
implementing advanced security measures to protect its users' data and
transactions.
 Increased Revenue: The growth of e-commerce has led to increased revenue for

This has helped to drive the growth of eSewa's business and position it as a key

2.1 E-commerce Operation and Procedures
2.1.1 Operations
eSewa operations offer range of digital payment solution making it more popular choice
among Nepalese consumer. Since it is e-commerce as well as M-commerce business, it
provides services 24/7/365 to the all kind of consumers. Following are the operation
eSewa includes:
 Online payment gateway: eSewa offer an online payment gateway that enables
customer to pay for goods and services online, using their eSewa wallet. This
payment gateway is integrated with various e-commerce websites in Nepal making
it easy for customer to pay for their purchase
 Mobile app for shopping: eSewa’s mobile app offers a shopping feature that
allows users to browse and purchase product from various e-commerce store.
Customer can pay for their purchases directly from their eSewa wallet, making the
shopping experience fast and convenient.
 Bill payment: eSewa allows customer to pay their utility bills, internet bills,
mobile recharge, and others bill online, directly from their eSewa wallet. This
feature eliminateneed to stand in long queue to visit the bill payment center.
 Money transfer: eSewa enable customer to transfer money to other eSewa user or
bank accounts in Nepal. This feature is especially useful for those who want to
send money to their friends and family living in different parts of the country.
 Online ticketing: eSewa offer an online ticketing services that enables customer to
book tickets for movies, concert, and event in Nepal. Customers can pay for their
tickets online using their eSewa wallet and avoid the hassle of standing in long
queues.
2.1.2 Procedures
E-commerce procedures refers to the various steps involved in conducting online
transactions between buyers and sellers. ESewa also provides a convenient way for users
to make online payment for various goods and services. Here are the main procedures
involve in eSewa:

 Website development: ESewa have website www.eSewa.com for conducting
online transaction and www.eSewablog.com for provide detailed information about
their services and other information.
 Online catalog: ESewa has an online catalog that lists all the services the offer.
This catalog includes service description, charge for descriptions and syntax for
made payment thorough websites.
 Sign up for an eSewa account: Customer can sign up for an eSewa account on the
eSewa website or mobile app. Users will need to provide personal information or
they can simply fill up KYC form.
 Add fund to eSewa wallet: After register their eSewa account, they got their
personal id and password. Then they can add funds to eSewa wallet using various
methods, such as bank transfer, mobile banking, or debit/credit card.
 Find a merchant that accepts eSewa payments: Users can find the list of
merchants that accept eSewa payments on the eSewa website or mobile app. other
popular e-commerce websites in Nepal, such a Daraz and SastoDeal also accept
eSewa payments.
 Place an order and select eSewa as the payment method: After selecting the
items, ticket, or bills, customers can select eSewa as the payment method during the
checkout process.
 Enter eSewa login credentials and confirm the payment: User will be redirected
to eSewa website or mobile app to complete the payment. Enter eSewa login
credentials and confirm the payment amount.
 Receive conformation of the transactions: Once the payment is completed, user
will receive a conformation message from eSewa and the merchant.
 Check eSewa transaction history: Users can check their eSewa transaction history
to confirm that the payment has been processed successfully.

The network infrastructure incorporates all of the organization’s data, and
communication. Network infrastructure refers to the hardware and software resources of
an entire network that enable network connectivity, communication, operations and
management of an enterprise network. Network infrastructure provides the
communication path and services between users, processes, applications, services and
external internet. In eSewa network infrastructure made lot easier for to connect different
functional department of eSewa like international ticketing, customer handling,
transaction controlling, merchant handling, human resource, security department.
 Networking hardware includes networking devices (modem, hubs, switches,
routers, computers), data center (physical servers, database software). 
 Networking software basically contains security software (firewall, antivirus
software),system software (operating system, browsers), application system etc.
 Network types used by eSewa are internet, intranet, VPN. Where, internet is used
for connect with customer and merchant. Intranet is used for communicate the
information within cross functional unit of eSewa. Virtual Private Network is used
transaction process and to passes confidential information to data center for
storage.

Security refers to the process of protecting software applications from various types of
security threats, vulnerabilities, and risks. This involves implementing various measures
and controls to prevent unauthorized access, data breaches, and other forms of
malicious attacks that can compromise the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of
an application. E-sewa uses following security measures:
 Two-factor authentication: The user's identity is verified during the registration
process, and only the user whose name is registered is allowed to access the
account and transact. Upon successful registration, eSewa provides the user with a
personal account that can be accessed through a website or a compatible mobile
application usinga password and MPIN (Mobile Personal Identification Number). It
is important to keepthe account password and any identification provided by eSewa
confidential to preventunauthorized access and fraudulent activities.
 SSL (Secure Sockets Layer): When a user accesses eSewa's website or mobile
application, SSL creates a secure connection between the user's device and eSewa's
server, ensuring that any data transmitted between the two is encrypted and
protected from unauthorized access. This includes sensitive information such as
login credentials, personal details, and financial information. Additionally, SSL
helps to prevent various types of security threats such as data interception,
