Objective:
By the end of this lesson, participants will understand the concept of teaching
people with Special needs, its importance in facing pressure and challenges. They
will learn practical strategies to cultivate effective and professional teaching style
in their teaching profession.

special needs. By incorporating visual supports,

DEFINITION OF SPECIAL EDUCATION
Special education is a field of education that

focuses on meeting the unique learning needs of
students with disabilities or exceptionalities. It is
designed to ensure that all students, regardless of
their abilities or challenges, have access to
appropriate educational opportunities and supports
that enable them to reach their full potential.
8 KEY ASPECTS OF WHAT SPECIAL
EDUCATION IS ALL ABOUT:
1. Individualized Education: Special education
recognizes that each student is unique and may
require individualized instruction and support to
succeed academically, socially, and emotionally.
Special education programs develop Individualized
Education Programs (IEPs) for students with
disabilities, which outline specific goals,
accommodations, and services tailored to the
student's needs.
2. Inclusion and Accessibility: Special education
promotes inclusive practices that ensure students
with disabilities have access to the general
education curriculum and learning environments
alongside their peers without disabilities. This may
involve providing accommodations, modifications,
assistive technology, and support services to
facilitate meaningful participation and learning for all
students.
3. Multidisciplinary Approach: Special education
involves collaboration among various professionals,
including special education teachers, general education
teachers, speech-language pathologists, occupational
therapists, physical therapists, school psychologists, and
other specialists. Together, these professionals assess
students' needs, develop appropriate interventions, and
provide ongoing support to promote their academic and
developmental progress.
4. Differentiated Instruction: Special education teachers

use differentiated instructional strategies to accommodate
diverse learning needs and styles within inclusive
classrooms. They adapt teaching methods, materials, and
assessments to meet the individual needs of students with
disabilities, providing additional support, scaffolding, and
modifications as needed to ensure learning success.
5. Support Services: Special education encompasses a

range of support services and interventions to address
students' unique needs and challenges. These services
may include specialized instruction in academic subjects,
speech and language therapy, occupational therapy,
physical therapy, counseling, behavior intervention, and
social skills training, among others.
6. Advocacy and Rights: Special education advocates for
the rights and inclusion of students with disabilities in the
educational system and society at large. It ensures that
students with disabilities are entitled to a free and
appropriate public education (FAPE) in the least restrictive
environment (LRE), as guaranteed by federal laws such as
the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) in the
United States. Same here in the Philippines 
7. Transition Planning: Special education supports
students with disabilities as they transition from one
educational setting to another or prepare for post-
secondary education, employment, and independent living.
Transition planning helps students develop the skills,
knowledge, and resources they need to achieve their post-
school goals and lead fulfilling lives as contributing
members of society.
8. Family Collaboration: Special education recognizes

the importance of family involvement and collaboration in
supporting students with disabilities. Special education
professionals work closely with parents and caregivers to
develop IEPs, monitor progress, address concerns, and
ensure that students receive the necessary support and
services both at school and at home.
SUMMARY CONCLUSION:
In summary, special education is about providing

individualized, inclusive, and comprehensive support to
students with disabilities to help them overcome barriers to
learning, achieve academic success, and reach their full
potential. It is grounded in the principles of equity, access,
collaboration, and advocacy, with the ultimate goal of

and fulfilling lives.
