FAMOUS TOURIST DESTINATIONS IN KERALA
Kerala the land of rivers and lakes
Kerala,one of the most beautiful states in India having 44 rivers, 48

lakes , 6 national parks and 9 wild life sanctuaries.It is also famous for
paddy fields and coconut trees. The major attractions are backwater
areas of Alappuzha and hill stations of Munnar,Wayanad etc.
The famous destinations are
1.Munnar
The major attractions of Munnar is Neelakurinji flowers.It s flower

blossoms only once in twelve years.At the time of its blossoms the area
will be covered with blue colour.Its blossom time is from August to
October last week.
Another attraction in Munnar is Meesapulimala. It is the top point of
munnar.It is around 20 kilometres from munnar.Trekking is organised by
kerala forest department.The trekking path is a highly restricted
area.Without permission we can’t enter it.
2. Alappuzha
The main destinations are Thanneermukkam
bund,pathiramanal,kuttanad etc
Alappuzha is known as Venice of the east.The main backwater areas
spread in Alappuzha district.thanneermukkam bund divides Vembanad
lake into two parts.one with saline water and other with fresh water.
Kuttanad is called the granary of kerala.It is also called the rice bowl of
kerala.The famous nehru trophy boat race is in Punnamada lake.It
held on second saturday of august in every year.Pathiramanal is
famous for bird watching.This island is home for local and migratory
birds.
3.Kumarakom
The main destinations are Bird life sanctuary, house boats etc
It is around 10 kilometres from Kottayam and 32 kilometres from
alappuzha.It is set in the backdrop of Vembanad lake.House boats are
the major attractions.The toddy shop and food items like
karimeen.,shrimps etc are the favourite items.Kumarakom bird
sanctuary is extended around 14 acres.We can see thousands of birds
in sanctuary.
4.Kochi
The main destinations are Mattancherry synagogue,hill palace,fort
kochi,vypin,marine drive,wellington island,naval base,kadamakkudy etc.
Kochi is the most populated metropolitan city of kerala.It is also known
as the financial capital of kerala.the main attractive destination is fort
kochi.It is situated around 10 kilometre from Ernakulam south railway
station.The famous areas are beach,fishing net,dutch
cemetery,St,francis csi church,maritime museum,dutch places etc.
Mattancherry is the the jewish centre of kerala.It is also famous
in dutch palace, Jewish synagogue
Kadamakudy is an island suburb of kochi.It is famous for its
prawn farms.
Wellington island is a man made island.kochi naval base and cochin
port are in there.Central institute of fisheries technology located in
wellington island.Hill palace is near to tripunithara.It is the largest
archeological museum in kerala.It spread around 54 acres .It was the
official capital of cochin kingdom.
5.Wayanad
The main destinations are Thamarassery churam,pookode lake,kuruva
island,banasura sagar dam,edakkal cave etc
Wayanad is the only plateau in kerala.Around 1000 km in the district is
forested.
Edakkal cave is 25 kilometres from kalpetta.Inside the cave pictorial
writing,believed to be 6000 years old The Carvings of Edakkal cave are
only the examples of stone age in south india.
Kuruva island is densely rich with flora and fauna.The island is home to
rare species of birds,orchids and herbal plants.Only boats and rafts
provided by kerala tourism department is the way to enter the
island.Entry is restricted in rainy times due to bad weather.
Thamarassery Churam is in Kozhikode district but it is the entrance of
Wayanad district.it has nine hairpins and bends.It starts in Adivaram
and ends in Lakkidi view point.
The famous fresh water lake in Wayanad is pookode lake.It is the

smallest and highest elevation freshwater lake.
Banasura sagar dam is the largest earthen dam in india and second
largest in asia.It is located 21 kilometres from Kalpetta
6.Thiruvananthapuram
The main destinations are Padmanabhapuram
temple,kovalam,vizhinjam,varkala,shanghumukham etc
Thiruvananthapuram is the capital of kerala.it is one of the major IT

hubs in kerala.
Sree Padmanabha swamy temple is the richest temple in kerala.The
city name belongs to this temple means the city of anantha( lord vishnu)
Kovalam is a famous beach located 12 km from the city.It is the most
popular and largest lighthouse beach in kerala.
Varkala is known as the pearl of the Arabian sea situated in the
northern suburb of Thiruvananthapuram. The main attractions of
varkala is 2000 year old Janardhana swamy temple near to varkala
beach.It is also famous in ayurveda treatment.
Vizhinjam is a port located 16 km from Thiruvananthapuram. It is an
international port.
Shankumugham beach is very close to Thiruvananthapuram airport.It is

very famous in bali tharpanam for hindus.
7.Thrissur
The main destinations are Athirappilly waterfall,vadakkumnatha
temple,sakthan thampuran palace etc.
Thrissur is called the cultural capital and gold capital of kerala.The
vadakkumnatha siva temple and thekkikadu maidanam is famous for
thrissur pooram.
Thrissur is also a major academic hub of kerala.Kerala Kalamandalam
for art and cultural events located in Cheruthuruthy.
Athirappilly waterfalls is the largest waterfall in kerala which stands tall
at 82 feet .Near to this Vazhachal waterfalls.This is very famous for
shooting locations.
Sakthan Thampuran palace is situated in Thrissur city.It was built by
Ramavarma Sakthan thampuran.It is the combination of kerala and
dutch style.
8.Kollam
The main destinations are Ashtamudi lake,mundrothuruth,jadayu
para,sastham kotta freshwater lake etc
Kollam is the major cashew processing city in kerala .The city is on the
banks of Ashtamudi lake and Kallada river.
Kollam beach is the first beach wedding destination in
kerala.Thangassery light house is the second tallest lighthouse in
kerala having height of 41 metres
Hanging bridge in Punalur is another attraction.
Sasthamkotta lake is a fresh water lake.It is the largest one in kerala
Another attraction is Sambrani kodi.We can walk through this lake
9. Kannur
The main destinations are Thalassery fort,muzhappilangad
beach,parassinikadavu,light house etc
Kannur is called the land of looms and lores and is also famous in
theyyam a folk art The manchester of kerala is Kannur
Thalassery fort is located 5 km from Thalassery. It was built by an east
india company.
Muzhappilangad beach is a drive in beach in kerala.It was 0ne of the
best six drive in beach in the world
Parassinikadavu muthappan temple,snake park,rajarajeswara
temple,munderi bird sanctuary are the main attractions.

10. Palakkad
The main destinations are
Nelliyampathy,Attappady,Malampuzha,Dhoni waterfall,Silent valley
national park etc
Nelliyampathy is 60 km away from palakkad.It is surrounded by tea and
coffee plantations.there is also an orange farm.
Malampuzha dam is the second largest dam in kerala.The main
attractions are dam,amusement park,boating facilities,rock garden,rope
way etc.
Silent valley national park having the name due to the absence of noisy
cicadas.It is the home of lion tailed macaques Attappadi is a tribal
taluk.Attappadi reserve forest is a protected area of 249 sq km
