RABINDRA BHARATI UNIVERSITY
Rabindra Bharati University was the third in the chronological order of establishment of different
universities in the city of Calcutta in post independence period. Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy's dynamic
and personal efforts, as the then Chief Minister of West Bengal to disseminate and instill Tagorean
ideals of education as well as to pay homage to the great poet's memory during Tagore's Birth
Centenary, had borne fruit finally in the establishment of this University. In accordance with the
Rabindra Bharati Act in 1961, the University started functioning at the ancestral house of the Tagores at
Jorasanko at Maharshi Bhavan on the 8th of May, 1962. In 1976, a new campus was located at the
Emerald Bower in B.T.Road as part of the plans for the expansion of the institution. The Emerald
Bower is also prominent as a Heritage House. This fine mansion had been constructed by the
descendants of Harakumar Thakur of Pathuriaghata, a Branch of the Jorasanko Tagore family. It is
here that the adolescent Rabindranath had made acquaintance with the great litterateur Bankim
Chandra Chattopadhyay. The University has its Museum located at Jorasanko Campus and the Arts,
Fine Arts and Visual Arts Faculties at the Emerald Bower Campus. The main administrative offices are
also located at the Emerald Bower. The third campus of the University “Rabindra Bhavan'' is located
at Salt Lake.
The 1961 Rabindra Bharati Act was reconstituted and re-enacted in 1981. The Rabindra Bharati Act,
1981 in its Preamble has clearly stated the goals of the University. The tasks assigned to the University
shall be “… to encourage in conformity with the ideas and thoughts of Rabindranath Tagore, the
integration of cultural heritage of the nation consistent with its linguistic and socio-economic history
and enable it to function more efficiently as a University encouraging and providing for instruction,
teaching, training and research in various branches of learning and course of study, promoting
advancement and dissemination of knowledge and learning and extending higher education, to meet
the growing needs of society and to make the constitution of various authorities of bodies of the
University more democratic.''
In the past few decades, the University has developed as a leading centre for teaching and research in
the fields of language, literature, social sciences, performing arts and visual arts. The number of
students qualifying in the NET, SET, SSC and other competitive examinations has been increasing
over the years. Teachers and students of the Performing and Visual Arts Faculties have brought
laurels for the University both at national and international levels. In recent years, the University is
developing international collaborations in teaching and research. There has been increasing emphasis
on greater mobilization of resources. Infrastructural facilities have been developed to quite a
reasonable extent. With the active cooperation of teachers, students, officers and employees and the
efficient and democratic functioning of all authorities and bodies, the University has earned a pride of
place in the world of higher education at both national and international levels.
