Network Design for "TechConnect Inc."

1. Project Scope and Report Requirements

Business Case Study: TechConnect Inc. is a technology startup with offices in three countries: Singapore,
South Africa, and Mexico. Each office has 3 floor levels in its building.

Introduction - The project aims to design and set up a computer network for World Network Co, a
multinational company with offices in Singapore, South Africa, and Mexico. The network will facilitate
communication and data transfer between employees and central servers located in the main office in
Singapore. The network must be designed to accommodate the specific needs of each location, ensuring
reliable connectivity and efficient data transfer.

2. Business Case Study:

• Company Overview: TechConnect Inc. is a multinational company with offices in three countries:
Singapore, South Africa, and Mexico. The main office is located in Singapore, with 30 employees. The South
Africa office has 20 employees, and the Mexico office has 25 employees. Each country site has 3-floor levels
of building.

• Network Requirements: Each employee will have their desktop computer connected to the network. The
network must provide reliable connectivity and efficient data transfer between the three offices and the
central servers in Singapore.

3. Planning and Design:

• Network Architecture:

A hierarchical network design will be put in place to guarantee scalability, ease of management, and
effective traffic management. This architecture will comprise three layers: core, distribution, and access. The
core layer will link the three sites, while the distribution layer will facilitate connectivity between the core
and access layers. The access layer will be responsible for connecting individual devices to the network.

Core Layer: The core layer will connect the three sites and provide high-speed, reliable connectivity. This
layer will include routers and switches capable of handling large volumes of data traffic.

Distribution Layer: The distribution layer will provide connectivity between the core layer and the access
layer. It will include routers and switches to manage traffic and ensure efficient data transfer.

Access Layer: The access layer will connect individual devices, such as desktops, laptops, and printers, to the
network. This layer will include switches to provide local connectivity within each office.

3
•Equipment: High-performance routers and switches will be deployed at each site. Central servers will be
located in the main office in Australia.

Routers: High-performance routers will be deployed at each site to manage traffic between the sites and
the central servers located in the main office in Australia.

Switches: Managed switches will be used at each site to provide connectivity within the office and ensure
efficient data transfer.

Servers: Central servers will be located in the main office in Australia to store and manage data for all
locations. These servers will include file servers, application servers, and database servers.

• Connectivity: Each employee will have their own desktop computer connected to the network via
Ethernet cables.

Wireless access points will be installed on each floor to provide wireless connectivity for laptops and mobile
devices.

Virtual Private Network (VPN) technology will be used to ensure secure connectivity between the sites and
the central servers in Australia.

• Security: Firewalls, data encryption, and access control mechanisms will be implemented to secure the
network.

Firewall: A firewall will be deployed at each site to protect the network from unauthorized access and cyber
threats.

Encryption: Data encryption will be used to secure data transmission over the network, ensuring that
sensitive information remains confidential.

Access Control: Access control mechanisms will be implemented to restrict access to the network and its
resources based on user roles and privileges.

• Network Management: Network monitoring tools will be used to monitor the performance and health of
the network, allowing for proactive management and troubleshooting.

Regular audits and updates will be conducted to ensure that the network remains secure and efficient.

4. Information Gathering Table:
Location: Singapore, South Africa, Mexico

Number of Employees: Singapore (30), South Africa (20), Mexico (25)

Equipment: Each employee has a desktop and is connected to central servers in the Singapore office.

Networking Devices Needed: 3 routers, 4 switches, 6 PCs, 3 VLANs.

Information Gathering:

Information Required How Information Was Gathered

Number of employees in each country Obtained from the company's HR department or employee records.

Number of floor levels in each building Survey of the physical locations or building plans.

Equipment requirements for each

employee Survey of current equipment or consultation with IT department.

Connectivity requirements for each Survey of current network infrastructure or consultation with IT
employee department.

Security requirements for the network Consultation with IT department and security experts.

Network management tools needed Research on industry standards and consultation with IT department.

5
5. Network Design and Justification
 Network Design:

Routers: 3 routers will connect the three country sites and manage inter-office traffic.

Switches: 4 switches will be used in each country site to connect devices.

PCs: 6 PCs will be connected to the network in each country.

VLANs: 3 VLANs will be implemented for each country site to segregate traffic and enhance security.

3. IP Addressing Scheme:

Singapore Office:

VLAN 1: 192.168.30.1/24 (30 hosts, 3 routers, 4 switches)

South Africa Office:

VLAN 30: 192.168.5.1/24 (20 hosts, 3 routers, 4 switches)

Mexico Office:

VLAN 50: 192.168.6.2/24 (25 hosts, 3 routers, 4 switches)

Justification:

Subnet Address: The subnet address is chosen based on the student ID, with the last octet (005) used as
part of the subnet address for uniqueness. This ensures that each subnet is uniquely identified.

Classless Inter-Domain Routing (CIDR): Using a /24 subnet mask provides enough host addresses for a
typical subnet while allowing for easy expansion if needed. It also aligns with common practices for
subnetting.

MIT's Range of IP Addresses: MIT, like many other institutions, has a range of IP addresses allocated to it.
Using a subnet within this range ensures that the addresses are valid and do not conflict with existing IP
assignments.

Avoiding Academic Misconduct: By using a student ID in a hypothetical context and not as an actual IP
assignment, this addressing scheme does not violate any academic integrity policies.

Conclusion: In conclusion, the project scope includes the planning and designing of a computer network for
TechConnect Inc. in Singapore, South Africa, and Mexico. The network will be designed to meet the specific
requirements of each location and ensure reliable connectivity and efficient data transfer.

The proposed computer networking solution for TechConnect Inc. will provide a scalable, reliable, and
secure network infrastructure to support the company's operations in Singapore, South Africa, and Mexico.
