CHAPTER 01
Introduction
Switzerland is the wealthiest nation in Europe
Country in a Nutshell
Switzerland, which has some of the most beautiful mountain scenery in Europe, is
also the richest country in the world based on its average and median wealth per
capita. Primary reasons for such wealth are the country’s strategic position and
studied neutrality. As a result of agreements in a variety of sectors, the EU has a
more favorable relationship with Switzerland than any other country in the world,
which makes it Switzerland’s largest trading partner. The main drivers of
Switzerland’s economy are a much-developed services sector, especially financial
services, strong high-technology manufacturing, political stability, a strong
infrastructure, and low corporate tax rates. However, the country is highly reliant
on trade with EU countries, which purchased over 50% of Switzerland’s exports in
2019.

In global comparison, Switzerland has a very high level of human development
Human Development Index
• The Human Development Index was created to emphasize that people and their
capabilities should be the ultimate criteria for assessing the development of a
country, not economic growth alone
59
• The Index is based on the results of 2.2 million adults in 112 countries and
territories
• In 2021, the overall global score for female participants was 498, and the score
for male participants was 508
• The group between the ages of 26 and 40 performed the highest with a score of
529
• Europe has the highest regional average, whereas the Middle East has the lowest
• The levels are based on index values divided between very low (300-449), low
(450-499), moderate (500-549), high (550-599), and very high (600-800). Countries
