Nansy Oops Snowman
Hi there! Christmas is right around the corner – it's time for whimsical and
touching gifts. Let’s crochet this little snowman together! It can be used as a
decoration or a hanging ornament for the Christmas tree. It will also make a
wonderful Christmas gift.

Abbreviations.
• AMR – adjustable magic ring
• ch – chain
• dc –double crochet (US) = treble (UK)
• dec – decrease PLEASE NOTE! When working with embroidery floss, make
the decrease by skipping 1 st instead of crocheting 2 together, since this is
much easier. If using crochet hook 0.75 mm [US Steel Crochet Hook Size 10]
or larger, work regular decreases.
• hdc – half double crochet (US) = half treble (UK)
• inc – increase (2 sc worked into the same stitch = with a shared base and
separate tops)
• sc – single crochet (US) = double crochet (UK)
• sl-st – slip stitch.

The whole toy is worked in spiral rounds; numbers in parenthesis (xx) at the
end of the round show the total stitch count after completion of this round.
I work with this type of novelty yarn inside out so that the tail from the
beginning AMR stays on the outside. This makes for a fluffier toy.

Shape-cinching. Attach a piece of sturdy thread at the base of the head (at the
bottom). Exit the needle at Point 1, then insert into Point 2, and exit at the
bottom edge of the head. Pull strongly to cinch. Repeat these steps at Points 3
and 4. See photo:

8
Place the eyes into the recessed sockets resulting from cinching (approximately
between Rounds 9 and 10). I used eyes with shanks – for ease of use, shorten the
shank with wire cutters, so that it won’t be too long, and place the eye, shank
first, into the recessed socket. Additionally secure the eye with super glue, adding
a drop of super glue to the tip of a needle, then inserting the needle under the
eye, and pressing the eye on firmly.
Embroider the iris by making a few stitches in Pastel Blue (floss held double)
under each eye.
To shape the eyelid, take up white floss or thread, attach it to the bottom of the
head, and thread it through to the outside under the eye, at the outside edge of
the eye.

Embroider one long diagonal stitch, and affix it to the head with smaller
perpendicular stitches. Add volume to the eyelid by winding the working yarn
around the initial stitch. Repeat these steps for the other eye.
With pastel blue thread or floss, embroider bushy eyebrows, in the same manner
as done for the eyelids – make a not-to-long stitch under the eyelid, then add
volume to it, winding the working yarn around it 3–4 times. Repeat all steps for
the other eyebrow.

To sew on the head, use the ending tail left hanging earlier (or the ending tail
from the body). The needle threaded with the tail needs to be inserted into the
same spot every time, and needs to be exited in this same spot as well. Watch a
detailed video, showing the technique on the example of a panda, here.
Sew the legs to the body in the vicinity of Round 8. For attractive shaping, sew on,
going with the needle through the leg, as shown in the photo.
For the arms, take up two short lengths of wire (each one about 18 mm [0.7
inches] long), bending the ends back into a loop shape as shown in the photo
below. Beginning at the loop shape (after having first added a small drop of glue),
begin winding brown thread around the wire. For the thread to stay in place, add
small drops of glue along the whole length of the wire, while copiling the thread
around the wire.
At the end, leave 2–3 mm [0.08–0.1 inch] of wire uncovered. Cut off excess wire.

Pull the mitten onto the end bent into a loop. If it stays in place on its own, it
doesn’t need to be glued on. Insert the arms at the sides of the body between
Rounds 15 and 16. Glue the arms to the body with Superglue.
Crochet a tiny scarf for the snowman. Since it curls on its own on account of the
stitches used, it won’t need to be attached to the snowman and can be left
removable.
Embroider two buttons on the belly with pastel blue thread or floss. For this, use
the French Knot embroidery stitch. Here is a video.
To create the headband with deer antlers, take up a small piece of wire, and bend
it into a half-circle shape, following the curve of the head (so it will be of the right
size), and finish both ends by bending them back in a loop shape.

12
Take up brown thread, and beginning in the middle (after having first added a
small drop of glue), begin winding the thread around the wire. For the thread to
keep in place, add small drops of glue along the whole length of the wire while
coiling the thread around it. Cover the entire length of the wire, including the
bent-back loops at the ends.
For the antlers, bend wire in the shape of the letter “Y” as shown in the photo
above (you will need to make two antlers) and in the same way, with the help of
glue, wind brown thread around them. For ease of work, begin at the bend of the
antler – cover one side of the “Y” first, then the other, and finally, moving from
the top down, cover the remaining bottom part.
Cut off excess wire. Glue the antlers and the earlier crocheted ears to the
headband using superglue. Let the glue dry before trying on the headband!
