• TRADITIONAL COMPOSERS
1. FRANCISCO BELTRAN BUENCAMINO (1883-1952)
- Founded the Centro Escolar de Señoritas, Conservatory of Music, as well as the Buencamino Music Academy in 1930.
- Ventured into musical direction and scoring for films, as well as composing several zarzuelas and kundiman.
• His works include:
- Mayon
- Larawan
- Maligayang Bati
2. FRANCISCO SANTIAGO SANTIAGO (1889-1947)
- known as the “Father of the kundiman”
- Belongs to the ”Triumvirate of Filipino Composers”
- Romantic in style, incorporating Western forms and techniques with folk materials.
- First Filipino Director of the Conservatory of Music, University of the Philippines.
• His works include:
- Pakiusap
- Madaling araw
- Kundiman (Anak Dalita)
3. NICANOR STA. ANA ABELARDO (1893-1934)
- 20th century modern composer and Composer in the Romantic style.
- Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo (Main Theater) of the Cultural Center of the Philippines and the Abelardo Hall of the UP
college Of Music are named after him.
• His works include:
- Mutya ng Pasig
- Nasaan ka irog
- Cavatina for Violincello
- Magbalik ka Hirang
4. ANTONIO J. MOLINA (1894-1980)
- product of both Romantic and Impressionist style.
- Known as the “Father of the Impressionist Music.”
- Fascinated by the dynamics and harmonies of Debussy, but retained much of the Romantic Style in his melody.
• His works include:

5. HILARION FRANCISCO RUBIO (1902-1985)
- was a composer, music teacher, conductor, and clarinetist.
- Conductor for opera, ballet, and dance recitals; and his music for movies.
• His works include:
- Bulaklaken
- Florante at Laura
6. COL. ANTONINO RAMIREZ BUENAVENTURA (1904-1996)
- promoted Philippine Music by extensively using folk materials in his work.
- Recorded folk and dance music together with Ramon Tolentino and National Artist For Dance Francisca Reyes Aquino.
- Restored the Constabulary Band in 1945.
- Consider as “One of the Best Military Bands in the World.”
• His works include:

- Mindanao Sketches
7. RODOLFO SOLDEVILLA CORNEJO (1909-1991)
- Researcher and official composer of the Philippine Government in exile, under President Manuel L. Quezon.
- Served as the pianist director of a USO concert unit that entertained the Allied Forces during WW2.
- Later became a soloist of several orchestras, and eventually the musical director of the Sampaguita and Vera-Perez
movie companies.
• His works include:
- Caprice on a folk song
- Cello Sonata
8. FELIPE PADILLA DE LEON (1912-1992)
- Nationalist composer who expressed the Philippines Cultural identity through his compositions.
- Write piano compositions, hymns, marches, art songs, chamber music, symphonic poems, overtures, band music, school
songs, orchestral works, operas, kundiman, and zarzuelas.
- National Artist for Music.
• His works include:
- Noli Mi Tangere
- El Filibusterismo
9. LUCIO DIESTRO SAN PEDRO (1913-2002)
- Known as the “Romantic Nationalist”
- He incorporated the Philippine folk elements in his compositions with Western forms in harmony.
- Cora have a rich expressive tonality.
• His works include:
- Sa Ugoy ng Duyan
- Suite Pastorale
- Lahing Kayumanggi
10. ROSENDO EJERCITO SANTOS JR. (1922-1994)
- prolific composer whose works include concerti, sonatas, symphonies, symphonic poems, five operas in the Philippines
dialect, numerous band overtures, and over 200 marches.
- He also wrote 50 Masses in Latin and 20 in English.
• His works include:
- Melinda’s Masquerade
11. ALFREDO SANTOS BUENAVENTURA (1929-PRESENT)
- sole distinction among Filipino composers of having composed five full-length operas.
- Compositions combined contemporary and conventional styles, and contains melodies that are simple and
understandable, while using contemporary harmonies that enhance their complexity.
• His works include:
- Maria Makiling
- Diego Silang
12. RAYMUNDO CIPRIANO “RYAN” PUJANTE CAYABYAB (1954)
- A contemporary composer and conductor who spans both popular and classical works with his pop music, ballads,
operas, zarzuelas, orchestral arrangements, masses, psalms, and choral compositions.
- Compositions are traditional Western influence.
• His works include:
- Kay Ganda ng ating Musika
- Alikabok
- Spolarium

1. LEVI CELERIO (1910-2002)
- Guinness Book for World Records for being the only person to make music with a leaf.
- Wrote the lyrics for over 4000 songs
- Received numerous awards for his musical achievements in film.
- National Artist for Music and Literature.
• His works include:
- Ang pipit
- Sa ugoy ng Duyan
2. CONSTANCIO CANSECO DE GUZMAN (1903-1982)
- composer of the nationalistic song “Bayan Ko”
- Acknowledged as the “Dean of Filipino Movie Composers and Musical Directors”
- Became a music director of movie production like Sampaguita, LVN, Royal, Excelsior, Lea, and Tagalog Ilang-Ilang
Productions.
• His works include:
- Bayan ko
- Babalik ka rin
3. MIGUEL “MIKE” GUISON VELARDE JR. (1913-1986)
- was a composer, conductor, and musical director.
- In 1975 the Philippine Government Cultural Association awarded him the Cultural Achievement Award in popular music.
- He received a Gawad CCP Para sa Sining in 1986.
• His works include:
- Buhat
- Bituing Marikit
4. SANTIAGO SUAREZ (1901-1964)
- accomplished composer of traditional Filipino love songs.
• His works include:
- Dungawin Mo Hirang
- Bakya Mo Neneng
- Caprichosa
- Sa Labis ng Nayon
- Kataka-taka
5. RESTITUTO AQUINO UMALI (1916-1998)
- was a composer, teacher, and musical arranger.
- He arranged the Philippine National anthem and the local classic Kataka-taka for the Philippine Independence Night in
Boston in 1972.
- 120 movie theme songs, and composed more than 250 scores for movies.
• His works include:
- Saan Ka Man Naroroon
- Alaala ng Lumipas
6. ANGEL MATIAS PEÑA (1921-2014)
- was a classical and jazz composer, musical arranger, and bass player.
- Considered as “one of the founders of traditional jazz in the Philippines.”
• His works include:
- Bagbagtulambing
- Igorot Rhapsody
- Concerto for Jazz Quarter and Orchestra
7. ERNANI JOSON CUENCO (1936-1988)
- was a composer, film scorer, musical director, and music teacher
- was named National Artist for Music in 1999.
- His works embodies the Filipino sense of musicality, with the classical sound of the kundiman evident in name of his
ballads.
- National Artist for Music.
• His works include:
- Diligin mo ng Hamog ang Uhaw na Lupa
- Pilipinas, Inang Bayan
8. GEORGE MASANGKAY CANSECO (1934-2004)
- was considered “a nationality acclaimed composer of numerous popular Filipino classics.”
- He composed songs for some of the country’s top popular singers such as Sharon Cuneta, Basil Valdez, Regine
Velasquez, Zsa Zsa Padilla, Pilita Corrales etc.
• His works include:

- Hiram
- Langis at Tubig
- Hanggang sa Dulo ng Walang Hanggan
9. LEOPOLDO RIGO SILOS SR. (1925-2015)
- was a composer, singer, and musical arranger.
- He composed and recorded romantically soulful songs.
• His works include:
- Dahil sa Isang Bulaklak
- Hindi Kita Malimot
- Aling Kutsero

- Princess Joelle Ann Gonzales
