 Chapter 1: World Governments share UFO
(UAP) information - Countries: Australia, Brazil,

"On March 21, 1990, The Chief of the Russian Air Defense
Forces, General Igor Maltsev, commented that a 200 meter (328-
foot disc) near a Russian highway was beyond terrestrial
machine capabilities. The UFO encounter took place with MIG
fighters. In other articles, Maltsev shared he believed these
machines have been able to master gravity."[i]

Terms used in this book:

UFO means “Unidentified Flying Objects”. The term was used as

early as the 1940’s to label any object in the sky that was not
identified. This term could be used for “flying saucers”, potential
balloons, potential aircraft, potential meteors, potential planets, etc.

UAP means “Unidentified Aerial Phenomena”. Though the term

UAP was used for several decades for flying saucers and alien
UFOs, it is now being recognized as the new reference by
governments around the world for UFOs.
 The World Awaits – UFOs (UAPs)

Why is it the World governments do not all come out and admit
UFOs are in our skies when we now have photographic, video, radar,
and eyewitness evidence?
It seems, no matter how much evidence is provided, many world
governments continue to deny the existence of these visitors, even
while these ships hover over our homes, baseball stadiums and
follow our passenger planes.
There is no organized plan to introduce the subject of UFOs to
the worldwide community.
That said, various governments release documents from time to
time to confirm their presence in our skies.
In this first chapter, we discuss countries around the World that
have been sharing data on UFOs (UAPs) for decades.

The U.S., Australia, and Britain

shared information on UFOs

As to UFOs, specific government agencies led a cover-up in 1966.

Congress was never fully informed of the truth about UFOs.
On July 12, 1966, information came to light that the U.S. Air
Force in front of its Congressional Hearings stated that neither the
U.S. nor any other foreign governments had any UFO Information to
exchange.
The statement was made in answer to a question asked by
Congressman Nedzi of Michigan.
Sadly, the response to Congress was a lie. Many countries have
now admitted, the U.S. government and other countries exchanged
information on UFOs (UAPs). Here are just a small sample of such
facts:

1953: On August 31, 1953, Mr. T.C. Drury, Deputy Regional

Director of Civil Aviation, took a motion picture of a UFO
maneuvering over Port Morseby. The film was sent to Air
Technical Center in Dayton, Ohio. Analysis of the results was
 never released. When the film was returned, several frames of
the craft were missing.

1966: The Australian RAAF admitted that a UFO photo taken

over Perth in 1966 resulted in an immediate investigation by the
RAAF and the US Air Force. The photo was displayed in “Life
International” on April 18, 1966.

1965: On May 28, 1965, several photos of a UFO were taken

by a pilot of an Ansett-ANA plane flying from Brisbane to Port
Morseby. When the pilot reported the encounter, he was
instructed not to have the film developed in New Guinea. When
the pilot landed at Canberra, UFO censors were on hand to
confiscate the film and silence the crew.

1976: Carlos Castro Cavero, General in the Spanish Air

Force confirmed, “There is an international exchange of data.
Maybe when this group of nations acquires more precise and
definite information, it will be possible to release the news to the
World."

A conclusion to the "Unidentified Flying Objects – An Evaluation

Based on Australian, American and British Air Force Reports," stated:

"The Department will continue to assess all unidentified

aerial sightings reported in Australia and the Territories, and
will continue to liaise with the United States and United
Kingdon on this matter."[ii]

Now let's turn to individual countries and some of their

experiences and UFO studies.

Australia

UFOs are Top Secret

 In May 1952, it was made known to the public that the Australian
government considered UFOs (flying saucers) a matter of national
security.
The news article stated that Australian Security intelligence
officials said that flying saucers were security matters. Mr. Seymour,
superintendent of air traffic control, was told, all UFO reports were to
be collected, collated, and filed in the same manner as the United
States.[iii]

Australia | In July 1954, the Air Minister of Australia reported he

sent a telephoto movie of a saucer of Port Moresby to the United
States. The results of the copy of this photo have not been released
to the citizens of either government to date.[iv]

Former Australian Air Force Chief admits his sighting.

The former Royal Australian Air Force Chief, Air Marshal Jones,
released his own UFO sighting on October 16, 1957.

"Sir George confessed to the press he had been loath to

go public because people might think he was getting
screwy."

"However, he insisted, nothing anyone could do would shake him

from his belief of what he had seen with his own two eyes. The
American press failed to pick this up immediately." [v]

Update on the Air Force Chief, Air Marshal Jones UFO Incident

The sighting took place near his home in Mentone, Australia.

"According to Jones, the UFO was at 1,000 to 1,500 feet above the
ground and moved very fast." [vi]
 Argentina

Argentinian Naval Officer admits seeing UFO.

On May 12, 1962, Captain Luis S. Moreno of the Argentinian

Navy, admitted he witnessed a UFO in Mar del Plata with an
Argentine frigate Captain. Moreno has declared Argentina has been
concerned about UFOs since 1952. [vii]

Brazil

Brazilian Navy provides UFO cases to the U.S. Navy.

In December 1957, according to ‘Flying Saucer Review’,

Commander Jose Geraldo Brandao of the Brazilian Navy kept a large
classified file about saucers and acted in close agreement with the
United States Navy, interchanging information of never-released
sightings.
Commander Brandao was the Liaison Officer. Brazil exchanged
information with the United States through the American Navy
attaché. The Brazilian contact was a Commander Jose, Geraldo
Brandao.[viii]

Dr. Olavo T. Fontes

Brazil to U.S. Navy

When it comes to discovering detailed information on countries

sharing information, it was Dr. Olavo T. Fontes, who was a key in
unlocking the degree of such information known by our governments.
Fontes was a researcher for the Aerial Phenomena Research
Organization (APRO) in the 1950s and 1960s. Olavo was a brilliant
individual in that his research was thorough, he spoke several
languages, and he worked for the well-respected research
organization "APRO."
Fontes research is invaluable to today's researchers. His
connections in South America and the United States earned him
instant recognition with the researcher of yesteryear and today.
The research papers of Loren E. Gross revealed the following
letter (notes) by Dr. Olavo T. Fontes. Dr. Fontes belonged to the
Aerial Phenomena Research Organization (APRO). Today APRO is
known as MUFON.
Fontes prepared the letter regarding information shared with him
by the Intelligence Officers from the Brazilian Navy. The following
information about UFOs is placed below, with a few grammatical
changes for the improvement of content. The original letter has been
segmented into several parts for purposes of clarity. Following are
excerpts from February 14, 1958, The famous Fontes letter, 6:30 pm:

World Governments know

Flying Saucers are real

As we will learn in this book, every government on earth knows

the truth about UFOs. This phenomenon is no fantasy, it is real, and
we have proof of statements from generals to soldiers and deathbed
confessions. We live at a time when we can finally learn the truth
about Extraterrestrials in our atmosphere.
Dr. Fontes shares: "They told me that all governments and
military authorities throughout the World know that flying saucers
exist and that they are craft from another planet. They have absolute
proof of both things."[ix]

UFOs have Crashed

UFOs have crashed and been recovered by the militaries of the

World to study their construction and propulsion.
 Dr. Fontes shares: "As a matter of fact, six flying discs already
crashed on this earth and were captured and taken apart by military
forces and scientists of the countries involved--under the most rigid
and ruthless security restrictions to keep the matter secret. One of
those discs crashed in the Sahara Desert but was too much
destroyed to be of some use."
"Three others crashed in the United States, two of them in
excellent condition. The fifth crashed somewhere in the British
Islands, and the last one came down at one of the Scandinavian
countries; these two were almost undamaged too."
"All these six discs were small craft; 32, 72 or 99 feet in diameter.
In all of them were found bodies of members of their crews. They
were 'little men' and ranged in height from 32 to 46 Inches. They were
dead in all cases, killed in the disasters. The examination of the
bodies showed they were 'humanoid' --but not from this planet. In
some cases, the cause of the crash was determined with accuracy; it
was not apparent in the other."[x]

UFO Construction

Dr. Fontes shares: "All ships had the general shape of a saucer
with a cabin on top. All of them were of a very light metal, which was
assembled in segments that fitted in deep grooves and were pulled
together around the base. There was no sign of this on the outer
surface of the ships. Some of the ships had portholes made of an
unknown type of glass; many kinds of unknown materials were found
inside the ships."[xi]

UFO Propulsion

Dr. Fontes shares: "Examination of Instruments and devices found

aboard these discs showed that an extremely powerful
electromagnetic field propels them. Evidence shows it is a rotating
and oscillating high voltage electromagnetic field."
"Such a kind of field produces a gravity effect yet not understood.
All ships were carefully dismantled and studied. Unfortunately, the
more important problem was not solved; how these fields were
produced and what was the source of the tremendous amount of
electric energy released through these fields. No clues were found in
any of the discs examined."
"They got the power from nowhere. On the other hand, there is
evidence that large UFOs use some atomic engines as the power
source. This suggests that they were able to transmit electric power
through radio beams as we now send it through Wires."
"Some of the devices found inside the small discs could well
serve to receive and concentrate the electric power. If this is right, a
nuclear power-plant operated on a ship of a satellite of large
dimensions, placed outside our atmosphere, could feed electric
power to a whole fleet of smaller craft operating inside our
atmosphere. None of these UFOs of greater size was captured till
now."
"Our Scientists could build a ship propelled by a similar rotating,
oscillating electromagnetic field if they knew some method to change
the energy released into a nuclear-reactor directly into electric power.
The problem is not solved yet."[xii]

Extraterrestrials will Protect Themselves.

Humans, when confronted with danger, go into a "flight" or "fight"

response. UFO pilots are no different; they either chose to leave an
encounter or fight back when cornered.
Dr. Fontes shares: "These Visitors from outer space are
dangerous when apprehended and hostile when attacked. We have
already lost many planes attempting to shoot down one of them."
"We have no defense against them till now. The UFOs
outperform easily any of our fighters, which have no chance against
them. Guided missiles are also useless; they can fly still faster than
any of them and can even maneuver around them as if they were
toys, or they can interfere with their electric instruments and make
them useless soon after launched; or if they like, they can explode
them before they reach their proximities."
 "They have produced the crash of military planes (propeller or jet
type) and airliners by stalling their engines through interference with
their electrical systems (we don't know yet if this is a side effect of
their powerful magnetic field or the result of some weapon - possibly:
a high-frequency beam of some sort)."
"They also have a destructive long-range weapon which has
been used mercilessly against our jet fighters. In one case, for
example, a U.S. Navy Interceptor with a crew of two scrambled to go
after a UFO.
Their mission was, as usual, to make it land or shoot it down---if
necessary. They used their guns. The answer was immediate and
terrifying, instantly all metallic parts of their plane were disintegrated,
disrupted into thousands of fragments, and they found themselves
suddenly seated in the air (non-metallic pieces or objects were not
affected by the phenomenon); one of them was killed, but the other
lived to tell the story."
"We have evidence that this tremendous weapon is an ultrasonic
beam of some sort that disrupts the molecular cohesion of any
metallic structure.
They have means to paralyze our radar systems too, to interfere
with our radio and television apparatus, and to short-circuit our
electric power-plants."[xiii]

Surveillance or Reconnaissance and Invasion?

The real mission of these visitors appears to be surveillance of the

entire human population of earth. Whether we have photographs,
videos, movie film, radar evidence, and eyewitness testimonials, they
want to understand the men, women, and children of this planet.
Dr. Fontes shares: "They have not shown, until now, any interest
in contacting us.
They are preparing a planet-wide huge military operation to
interfere against us."
"We do not know what kind of operation this will be. There are,
however, three possibilities:
 1. "total war followed by mass-landings, to destroy our power,
slave the remnant or our people and colonize the planet";

2. "police action to stop our plans for the conquest of space,

and to avoid our dangerous progress in the field of atomic
weapons. This would involve mass landings at strategic
points with occupation by forces of limited areas of vital
interest for their purposes";

3. "friendly interference (followed by military intimidation) to

make us agree with their plans for us -- whatever they may
be --avoiding open war or any other kind of direct
interference; patrolling and eventual police-action only
outside our atmosphere.[xiv]

World governments share information

"but keep it classified."

The expression "many heads are better than one" certainly

applies to figure out what the population of earth is confronting. We
now have proof countries around the world share information
between themselves to discuss the phenomenon and how to handle
the matter.
Dr. Fontes shares: "All military authorities and governments
throughout the World are informed about the situation. There is an
exchange of information through intelligence services, and top-secret
military conferences are held periodically to discuss new
developments on the subject."

"The Brazilian Navy, for example, receives monthly

classified reports from the US Navy, and we send back to
them any information available here."
"A similar contact exists among our Army and Air Force and
several (similar) military organizations in other countries."

"Here in Brazil, only the persons who work in the problem

know the real situation."

"Intelligence officers in the Army, Navy and Air Force; some

high-rank officers in the High Command; the National
Security Council and a few scientists whose activities are
connected with it; and a few members of certain civilian
organizations researching military projects."

"All information about the UFO-subject from the military is

classified or reserved for official uses, but it is also top
secret."

"Civilian authorities and military officers, in general, are not

entitled to know. Even our President is not informed of the
whole truth."

"Military authorities through the World agree that the people

are not entitled to know anything about the problem. Some
military groups believe that such knowledge would be a
tremendous shock to paralyze the life in our countries for
many years in the future."
 "On the other side, they believe that flying saucer
reconnaissance (as it is now) might last another ten years --
the people could not be controlled for so long a time, and the
danger of uncontrolled panic would be high."[xv]

World Military Forces refrain

from acting against UFOs

As a result of the UFOs' technological advances over earth

military jets and weaponry, governments around the world had to
change the way they thought about these visitors. Rather than
attacking their spacecraft, we had to learn to approach them non-
violently and escort their ships away from the populace.
Dr. Fontes shares: "Besides, the probability of UFO-hostile
interference is estimated at 50%; there is yet a 10% probability that
their hostility is only a consequence of our attacks against their ships.
Because of this possibility, we are attempting to make them aware
that we would like to make peaceful contact."
"So, the order now is to avoid a further attack against their craft.
This policy has generally been adopted, except for some countries
which still have fools in their Air Forces – who think otherwise. We do
not know if UFOs will react to these measures recently put out under
operation. We hope they will."[xvi]

Global Censorship of UFOs

Many of the governments around the World continue to censor the

information on UFOs.
The most secretive to date continues to be the: United States;
Britain, Russia, and China. We find the smaller world governments
becoming more concerned with the safety of the populace and have
desired to educate humanity. We applaud them on this venture and
hope the superpowers come around to seeing this in the best interest
of man.
Dr. Fontes shares: "To conceal the truth from the public, carefully
planned censorship is under operation for several years. The policy to
debunk the whole saucer subject is the better weapon we are using
for this purpose.
Ridicule is an efficient tool against most people who attempt to
inform the public, but other measures are sometimes necessary.
Chiefly against persons who possess evidence that, if published,
would open the eyes of the public."
"In some countries, force has been used to silence some of
them. When this is not possible, all tricks had been used; to make
their evidence useless. In a few cases, unfortunately, violence had to
be used; we regret this, but we have no choice."
"We are going to keep this thing secret at any cost. We are not
interested in the so-called 'inalienable rights' of the people. Right or
wrong, we --the military --are going to do our job, and no one is going
to stop us."[xvii]

Britain

Britain struggled to inform the public of UFOs:

RAF leader Air Chief Marshal Lord Dowding

On July 11, 1954, an interview with the RAF leader Air Chief
Marshal Lord Dowding declared;

"flying saucers were real" and "from outer space."

The “London Daily Mail” shared, "the Air Marshal cited the high
volume of UFO reports, were reported speeding up to 9,000 miles per
hour as proof of craft created by an alien super science. Lord
Dowding considered the best evidence for the case for UFOs could
be found in Donald Keyhoe's 1953 book": 'Flying Saucers From Outer
Space.'[xviii]

The British Government wonders

"whether to inform the public about UFOs."

On January 5, 1955, the British Air Staff refused to release the

results of its five-year probe into the UFO mystery. House of
Commons member Patrick Wall challenged the Air Minister:

"If there is a security risk, which I don't think there is, the
public should know the truth." And "If the Air Ministry has
found the answer to whether or not they exist, it is of great
interest to everyone." [xix]

On January 21, 1959, MP Roy Mason asked Mr. Ward:

1. "what specific instructions have been sent to the

commanders of Royal Air Force stations to collect reports
from aircrews having allegedly sighted unidentified flying
objects?";

2. "what inquiries have been held following such sightings?";

and

3. "to what extent there is a collaboration between the

Department and the respective Departments in Canada and
the United States of America on this problem?"

"Mr. George Ward, the Air Minister, replied that RAF units have
standing instructions to report unusual flying objects when they
cannot readily be explained.
Reports which may have a bearing on air defense are
investigated. No special collaboration with Canada or the United
States is required." [xx]

British Ministry of Defense

 The British Ministry of Defense (MoD) and the French and Danish
governments released their UFO files in 2007, 2008, and 2009 amidst
extensive international press coverage.
Thousands of British UFO reports reflect sphere-shaped, disc-
shaped, box-shaped, triangular, and cigar-shaped ships. Less than a
thousand of these, as far as has been declassified today, reveal
stories on the large motherships, triangular, cigar, and disc-shaped
ships.
These nonconventional aircraft tend to be flying no higher 100
feet to 5,000 feet off the ground. At that height, a conventional aircraft
would produce engine noise, yet these UFOs produce no sound or a
slight humming sound when directly over the observers.
The problem we had in researching British UFO reports was
finding any mothership UFO stories with the dimension (size, length)
being estimated by the witness. Many of the observers used the term
the craft was massive, yet at what they thought might be 100 or 500
feet off the ground, they did not define "massive."
The stories in this section include those estimates of larger craft
as given by the observer over 100 feet in length.

Canada

Canadian Scientists
analyze UFO fragments from the U.S.

In 1952, UFOs flew over the U.S. Capitol in Washington, DC.

During that event, and over several other dates, Air Force and Navy
Jets chased and shot at the UFOs.
In one particular case, between July 8 and July 20, 1952, a U.S.
Navy Jet, after obtaining radar lock, open fired on a small UFO (about
10 feet in diameter) over the Washington DC and the Virginia border.
A small fragment from the craft fell to a farmer's field in nearby
Virginia.
Navy Lt. Commander Frank Thompson (of the U.S. Navy
Department) admitted the fragment's recovery. According to navy
analysis, the fragment had been milled; however, they were unable to
determine whether the thing was artificial or part of some unknown
type of meteorite. The U.S. Navy then submitted a sample to W. B.
Smith at Ottawa for study.

Wilbert Smith
(Canadian scientist) shared:

"As a general thing, the material differs only in that they are much
harder than our materials."
"I was informed that the disc was glowing and was about 10 feet
in diameter. A glowing chunk flew off, and the pilots saw it glowing all
the way down to the ground. He radioed his report, and a ground
party hurried to the scene. The thing was still glowing when they
found it an hour later. The entire piece weighed about a pound. The
segment that was loaned to me was about one-third of that. It had
been sawed off."
When asked about what they found during the analysis, Wilbert
Smith said, "there was iron rust. The thing was, in reality, a matrix of
magnesium orthosilicate. The matrix had great numbers– thousands–
of 15-micron spheres throughout it."
When asked whatever happened to that fragment after the
Canadians studied it, Wilbert Smith admitted it was returned to the
United States.
When asked if it was returned to the Air Force or Navy, Wilbert
confirmed "No."

He said it was given to a much higher authority. When

asked if it went to the CIA, Wilbert declined to say anything
other than, "I'm sorry, gentlemen, but I don't care to go
beyond that point. I can say to you that it went to the hands
of a highly classified group. You have to solve that problem–
Their identity– For yourselves."[xxi]

Canada's Defense Research Board

On April 22, 1952, Mr. O. M. Solandt, Chairman of Canada's

Defense Research Board (ORB), convened a secret meeting to brief
the eleven men of the board about the UFO activity in Canada,
stressing that the country had no official UFO investigative project.
The meeting's result was the appointment of a committee to
come up with a scheme to gather and analyze data. It was decided
the committee would meet again within 48 hours with suggestions.

Italy reached out to Canada

UFOs – What are they?

In 1955, Col. Buschi, with the office of air attaché, with the Italian
Embassy in Ottawa, desired more information on the history of UFOs'
from the Canadian government. In response, Canadian headquarters
sent the following information:
"Sightings of flying objects have been recorded in the Canadian
press since the turn of the century, but it was not until about 1947 that
the Services (Military) took a more than a casual notice of these
sightings.”
“Since that date, reports of UFO sightings have been collected
by various government departments on a voluntary submission basis.
While these reports were reviewed, the data presented never
appeared to warrant a systematic and scientific analysis.”
“In 1952, however, the sightings became so numerous that the
various Services (military branches) agreed to take a serious look at
the phenomenon.”
“Accordingly, a committee was formed on the Defense Research
Board auspices, the members representing the services, and any
member of the other government departments interested in the
explanation of unusual phenomena in the sky. The terms of reference
of this committee are mainly advisory, and no attempt was made to
systematically collect data.”
“A sightings report form was prepared for the use of anyone
interviewing the observer of an unidentified flying object.”[xxiii]

Royal Canadian Mounted Police

Were ordered to report UFOs
 On June 19, 1962, the Royal Canadian Air Force sent a memo to
the security intelligence division of the Royal Canadian Mounted
Police headquarters in Ottawa, stating instructions for reporting on
UFOs as vital intelligence sightings.
In this letter, it stated approximately two years ago, "Air Force
headquarters delegated the responsibility of the collation and
investigation over reports of UFOs to the ADC, Air Defense
Command. Delegation with respect to UFO reports was compatible
with the reporting of vital intelligence under the provisions of a
Canada / United States agreed reporting system."
This system, JANAP 146 (D) – Communications Instructions for
Reporting Vital Intelligent Sightings (CIRVIS), has been adopted by
DOT, also all Canadian Services and, I believe, your department.
Instructions have been promulgated to all concerned outlining the
procedures to be used in reporting as expeditiously as possible to the
ADC, Air Defense Command, any matter which may be of intelligence
value."[xxiv]

Canadian pilots warned away from UFOs in the 1960s

During the Cold War, Harold Reischman was a Canadian aviator

and served with the 439 Squadron out of England. He shared;

"We got scrambled against a lot of UFOs. I've seen flying

saucers, but we were steered away from them by
underground radar operators. If you got close to them, the
radar operators would say, "Break off," you can't go near
that one."[xxv]

Canadian Parliament
Members Urge UFO Study
 Fourteen years later, on April 21, 1966, a Member of the
Canadian House of Commons made a plea for a new, serious study
of Canada's UFO reports. The Honorable William Dean Howe, of
Ottawa, stated:

"We are long past the time when all UFO reports can be
written off as hallucinations, hoaxes, or alcoholic fantasies."

Most reports," he said, "come from people of good reputations,

whose testimony would be accepted without question under any other
circumstances.

There is too much-unexplained evidence to ignore."

Though Mr. Howe had reached no conclusions regarding the

UFOs, he specifically called for the Canadian government to assign a
department to conduct constant investigations of reports.
Immediately afterward, Canada's Associate Minister of National
Defence, the Hon. Leo Cadieux said he would see that an
investigation into UFO reports was initiated, "at least as far as the
Defence Research Board is concerned.
In a speech on the House of Commons floor on April 21, 1966,
Mr. William Dean Howe said:

"UFO reports contain "too much-unexplained evidence to

ignore" and that "a climate should be created in which
Canadians can report what they see without fear of ridicule."

Mr. Howe also urged that the Canadian government thoroughly

investigate UFO reports. During the same session, Leo Cadieux,
Associate Minister of National Defence, said that he would do his
"utmost to have initiated the inquiry requested by Mr. Howe. One year
later, Parliament member E.R. Schreyer urged the government to turn
over all its UFO information to the House of Commons for further
evaluation and study. [xxvi]

Opening Canadian UFO Files

 The Canadian government, under the leadership of the Rt. Hon.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper has provided open web access to
approximately 9,500 UFO files at its archive website, Library, and
Archives Canada.
Why the Canadian government chose to release its UFO files
with no public media notification is still unclear. The Canadian
government's release of its 9,500 UFO files, initially in August 2005
and then in December 2007, was quiet, with no international
announcement or press coverage. Only a mere handful of dedicated
Canadian UFO researchers were aware of the released files.
The Canadian UFO Reports are housed within four separate
categories:

1. The National Defense Department;

2. The Department of Transport;
3. The NRC (National Research Council)’ and
4. The RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police).

In 2016, Mr. Viggiani, a retired school administrator from Toronto,

released a total of 11 documents obtained through a Canadian
Access of Information Act (AIA) request. These cases are directly
from NORAD, indicating that over the last five years, an average of
1,800' tracks of interest' with 75 intercepts. This is directly from the
commander of NORAD."
NORAD is the US-Canadian organization responsible for
aerospace warning and defense of the North American airspace. The
NORAD files state:

"Any distribution of this kind of information threatens

National Security in addition to being a violation of the
Espionage Act of the United States." [xxvii]

France

French General in NATO

Hush–Hush Probe Investigation Ordered:
 On July 8, 1953, the “Long Island Daily Press” published the
following story:

"Paris-French military brass has ordered a hush-hush

probe into a new aerial mystery, a kind of 'flying turret'
officially reported by a top-flight air general."

"This officer, whose name cannot be revealed, is an armed forces

staff member and represents France in the North Atlantic Treaty
Organization." The article written by Paul Ghali reveals:

"An experienced pilot, General X testifies that while on a

routine flight in an army plane, he saw a turret-shaped
object streak by at 'tremendous speed."

Testimony

It occurred, he says, over a military airfield near Paris.

"I was 6,000 feet up, going 250 miles an hour,' he reports, 'when
suddenly an object about the shape and dimensions of a small ship's
turret, flashed toward me."
"Grey- black in color, it passed only a few yards from my plane's
wings. 'It moved at tremendous speed, but I was able to turn around
enough to keep it in my view."
"Amazed," he continues, 'I followed the course of the dark mass
until it disappeared.' "To make sure it was not something dropped by
another plane, General X scanned the skies. He saw no other craft."

Will France study UFOs?

On September 23, 1954, a French Deputy submitted a written

question to the Secretary of State for Air, asking whether the aerial
phenomenon is being studied so that the public can be told what is
going on. This request of more information on UFOs happened after
Police observed three large discs and several other UFO events
being seen at Ancona, Italy. [xxix]

French government confirms
(CNES, SEPRA, GEPAN)

On January 8, 1981, several trace elements were tested after a

UFO landed at the Village of Trans-en-Provence in the Var region in
southeastern France.
Researchers stated the following findings were: "Traces were still
perceptible 40 days after the event".
A Gepan report shared: "There was a strong mechanical
pressure forced (probably the result of a heavyweight) on the
surface." "A thematic heating of the soil, perhaps consecutive to or
immediately following the shock, the value of which did not exceed
600 degrees."
"From an anatomical and physiological point, they [leaves] had
all the characteristics of their age, but they presented the biochemical
characteristics of leaves of advanced age: old leaves! Moreover, that
doesn't resemble anything that we know on our planet."[xxx]

Greece

Greece determined UFOs are not human-made

In 1947 Dr. Paul Santorini, a Greek physicist, and engineer

investigated Unidentified Flying Objects over Greece. When first
observing these objects, he initially thought the objects might be
Soviet Missiles.
Then in 1947, Dr. Santorini confirmed: "We soon established that
they were not missiles. Foreign scientists flew to Greece for secret
talks with me."
According to Raymond Fowler's research, one of those countries
that came to Greece were representatives of the U.S. Government.
These representatives were from the "Pentagon and U.S. scientists."
Santorini further informed his colleagues that:
 "A world blanket of secrecy surrounded the UFO
question because the authorities were unwilling to admit the
existence of a force against which earth had "no possibility
of defense."

Furthermore, the Greek scientists added:

"For the time being, aliens were probably visiting earth to

collect plant and animal specimens but that their future
purposes were entirely unknown to us."[xxxi]

Netherlands

Netherlands has a UFO study group.

In 1977 the Netherlands Investigation Bureau for UFOs

(Nederlands Onderzoek Bureau voor ongeidentificeerde vliegende
Objekten) reported that as of the beginning of that year the three
police organizations in the Netherlands (Royal Military, Federal, and
Community) had agreed to work closely with NOBOVO in the
reporting of UFO cases.
This information comes to us from Mr. Douwe Bosga, NOBOVO
member, who had come to the US for a year or more to work with the
Center for UFO Studies as a volunteer. [xxxii]

Portugal

Portuguese Air Force

Concern for their pilots

On September 4, 1957, Captain L. Ferreira, a Portuguese military

authority, confirmed four jet planes encountered a Mothership and
three saucers that dove at them. Investigations followed and
remained classified.[xxxiii]

Puerto Rico
 Puerto Rican Legislature for UFO Study

In the 1970s, five members of the House of Representatives

submitted, for the first time in the history of the Puerto Rican
Legislature, a resolution to create a special commission to investigate
the UFO phenomenon in Puerto Rico.
The legislators felt that "during the past years information has
been brought to the public's attention concerning the supposed
presence of UFOs over Puerto Rico but that they have not been
informed satisfactorily of the facts and conclusions."
Though they did not "affirm the reality of the sightings, the
government officials stated that their only purpose was to bring about
investigation and recommendations concerning UFOs, since the
people of Puerto Rico have the right to know of this matter." [xxxiv]

Russia

UFOs chase Russian Pilots.

In 1961 an Italian named Signor Alberto Fenoglio claimed to have

met and interviewed a Russian diplomat and a Russian engineer
while traveling in the West. He shared:

"The saucers seem to have shown particular interest in

people who were taking flying lessons. Numerous
candidates for the Soviet civilian flying license have
described how the discs dogged them with extraordinary
persistence, even following them right back to their
airfields."[xxxv]

Russian Officers report UFOs

In March 1964, Air Force Reserve officer S.N. Popov and three
companions, witnessed two disks moving one behind the other and
then reformed to become a pair. This event occurred in
Petropavlovsk, Russia, at approximately 11:00 pm.
As these objects passed over the men, an intense bluish violet
light appeared on them. According to the witnesses, this light made
them feel "oppressed as if some natural calamity had occurred, a
very unpleasant feeling." [xxxvi]

Russian scientists confirm

UFO technology is beyond man's capabilities

In 1981 during an interview with Henri Gris, Dr. Felix Y. Zigel,

Professor of mathematics and astronomy at the Moscow Aviation
Institute, made the following comments:

1. "We have seen these UFOs over the USSR; the craft of
every possible shape: small, big, flattened, spherical.";
2. "They can remain stationary in the atmosphere or shoot
along at 100,000 kilometers per hour.";
3. "They are also able to affect our power resources, halting
our electricity generating plants, our radio stations, and our
engines, without, however, leaving any permanent
damage.";
4. "So, refined a technology can only be the fruit of intelligence
that is indeed far superior to man." [xxxvii]

President Ronald Reagan and President Gorbachev

discuss UFOs
 Before the September 21, 1987 speech at the United Nations
General Assembly, President Reagan met with President Gorbachev
and asked if Russia would help the US if an advanced race would
ever attack the U.S. – President Gorbachev agreed!
For those who have not heard President Reagan's speech, it is
on YouTube. Here is a brief excerpt of the statement:

"Our differences worldwide would vanish if we were

facing an Alien threat from outside this world, and yet I ask
you, is not an alien force already among us."

What did he say? – “Is not an alien force already among us”!

In another video, Reagan mentions conversations with Gorbachev

and how our countries would unite by forgetting our differences to
come together.
On February 17, 1987, General Secretary Gorbachev confirmed
that during Geneva talks with President Reagan (on December 4,
1985), the following:

"At our meeting in Geneva, the U.S. President said that if

the earth faced an invasion by extraterrestrials, the United
States and the Soviet Union would join forces to repel such
an invasion. I shall not dispute the hypothesis, though I
think it's early to worry about such an intrusion." [xxxviii]

Russia and US sign Treaty - UFOs

Russia and the United States enter agreement recognizing UFOs

could be mistaken as bombers and missiles avoiding World War III:
On September 30, 1971, according to Dr. Roberto Pinotto (CUN -
Centro Ufologico Nazionale – Italian National UFO Centre, Milan), an
agreement between Russia and the United States was signed in
Moscow.
This signed agreement, according to the article in the Flying
Saucer Review reveals two concerns:
 1. avoiding the accidental outbreak of war between the U.S.
and USSR through faulty interpretations of UFO's as ballistic
missiles,

2. both countries agree about hiding the truth about UFOs from
the public.

This signed agreement came into existence eight years after

President Kennedy asked NASA to work with Russian scientists in
1963 to avoid a potential calamity over UFOs misidentified as
missiles. [xxxix]

Update on Russia - US UFO Treaty

The 1977 edition of "Arms Control and Disarmament Agreements

- Texts and History of Negotiations," published by the US Arms
Control & Disarmament Agency, includes a chapter called:
"Agreement On Measures To Reduce The Risk Of Outbreak Of
Nuclear War Between The United States And The Union Of Soviet
Socialist Republics."
This section includes a statement about "arrangements for
immediate notification should a risk of nuclear war arise from such
incidents, from the detection of unidentified objects on early warning
systems or any accidental, unauthorized, or other unexplained
incident involving a possible detonation of a nuclear weapon" of
course, "unidentified object" is a broad term here, potentially including
aircraft and" natural" radar targets (but the implications are
provocative! - Ed.). [xl]

Spain

Spanish Air Force General

confirms international exchange of Information on UFOs
 In 1976 Carlos Castro Cavero, General in the Spanish Air Force
and former Commander of Spain's Third Aerial Region while being
interviewed stated:
"Everything is in the process of investigation in the United States
and in Spain, as well as in the rest of the World... Look, as a General,
as a military man, I have the same position as the one officially held
by the Ministry [of Defense]".
"Now, from a personal position, as Carlos Castro Cavero, I
believe that UFOs are spaceships or an extraterrestrial craft... The
nations of the World are currently working together in the
investigation of the UFO phenomenon.

There is an international exchange of data. Maybe when

this group of nations acquires more precise and definite
information, it will be possible to release the news to the
World."

Note 1: During the same interview, the General described a

daytime UFO sighting at his ranch near Zaragoza:

"I have observed one [UFO] for more than an hour... It

was an extremely bright object that remained stationary for
that length of time and then shot off towards Egea de Los
Caballeros, covering the distance of twenty kilometers in
less than two seconds. No human device is capable of such
a speed."

Note 2: He added that the Spanish Air Ministry investigated UFO

cases, including instances in which pilots had flown alongside UFOs,
but when they tried to get closer, they moved away at fantastic
speeds.
The investigations were kept confidential at the time, but in 1992
the Spanish Air Force finally began to systematically declassify its
UFO files.

Zimbabwe
 Zimbabwe Air Marshall confirms UFOs.

According to research by author Timothy Good on July 22, 1985,

a UFO incident occurred at the Bulawayo Airport in Zimbabwe. Air
Marshal Azim Daudpota was quoted in a local paper:

"This is no ordinary UFO...scores of people saw it."

"It was no illusion, no deception, no imagination."

Timothy Good followed up with his research on this event and

received a letter on October 24, 1985, from Air Commodore David
Thorne, Director General of Operations in Zimbabwe who stated:

"Although not speaking officially, as far as my Air Staff is

concerned, we believe implicitly that the unexplained UFOs
are from some civilization beyond our planet." [xlii]

U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy

Had UFO study centers

In 1953, the United States Air Force and the U.S. Navy had its
own independent UFO research agencies.
The U.S. Navy began a separate UFO program when former
Navy secretary Dan Kimball had a personal UFO experience with
several Admirals when returning in US Naval planes leaving Hawaii.
Including these two US military organizations, the countries of
Canada, Britain, France, Sweden, Norway, and Russia had their own
independent UFO study agencies.
At the time, the United States Air Force research staff included
scientists and technicians with over 200 UFO sighting stations with
specially constructed high-speed cameras. The results of
photographs taken by these of these cameras were never reported to
U.S. citizens.
During November 1953, President Eisenhower made a trip to
Canada to see their Super-secret Project-Y, a disc-shaped fighter
plane capable of speeds of 1,500 mph from a vertical takeoff. Further
reports on this Project-Y were never reported in newspapers to the
public.[xliii]

America's rich history of UFOs

The timeline of UFO study in America is vast. I am beginning with

Kenneth Arnold witnessing nine saucers in June 1947.

Several months later, in September 1947, Lieut. General

Twining of the Army Air Forces confirmed the phenomenon
was real and not visionary or fictitious. They were dish-
shaped and intelligently controlled.

In July 1948, a near collision between DC-3 and UFO

prompted Wright Patterson Air Force Base ATIC to write "an
estimate of the situation." This report was sent to the
Pentagon in September 1948. The conclusion that UFOs
were of interplanetary origin was not acceptable to the Air
Force Chief of Staff, Gen. Vandenberg. He had the
document declassified and destroyed. Dr. Hynek shared
years later; he was able to see and read a copy of this
report.

In March 1950, Navy commander Robert McLaughlin

tracked a 105-foot-long UFO over White Sands missile
proving ground with scientists and declared these objects
were of extraterrestrial origin.

In March 1952, the US Air Force began Project Grudge,

which was later remained Project Bluebook. Bluebook had a
total staff of ten people with a top-secret clearance. Project
Bluebook became part of project stork, a research group
that transcribed data on two IBM cards for future analysis.

In April 1952 – The Air Force issued orders 200 – 5, which

stated all U.S. Air Force units will report any UFO sightings
directly to the ATIC with a copy to the Pentagon.

July 1952 – two series of visual radar sightings of UFOs

occurred over the Washington National Airport, the capital in
Whitehouse.

November 1952 – the CIA arrange for government scientists

to meet at ATIC for three days as a planning review to
decide on recommendations for a higher-level panel of six
scientists.

In January 1953, the CIA convened in Washington DC with a

panel of six scientists, and after the fourth day concluded,
there is no direct threat to national security. This meeting,
the "Robertson Panel," became the cover-up for UFO history
in America.

In December 1953, the Air Force ordered 275 diffraction

gyrating cameras to be deployed to 200 U.S. bases and 75
overseas bases to track UFOs.
 In February 1954, Airline pilots were called to the Rosewood
Hotel in Hollywood with military intelligence officials. Using
JANAP 146 as the protocol, the military required civilian
pilots not to inform the public of their UFO sightings. In turn,
the commercial pilots would report UFO sightings to official
channels.

October 1954, the deputy Cmdr. Of Intelligence at ATIC, Col.

O'Mara, stated more than 1,000 people we're working on the
UFO problem.

In February 1955 – William P. Lear, chairman of Lear Inc.

(Lear Jets), stated that because of the flying saucers,
serious efforts were being made in the US to prove the
existence of anti-gravitational forces.

Antigravity Drive Propulsion Studies

In the United States

In a May 27, 1971 memo from O. H. Turner, headquarters of the

nuclear branch stated:

"Included documents and reports revealed statements

made by the CIA,
U.S. Air Force, congressional hearings, and project blue
book records about the UFO problem that tended to remain
hidden. Some of the information contained evidence for
weapon systems used by UFOs. The evidence was culled
from computerized records collected by Dr. Vallee in
collaboration with Dr. Hynek."

A clear indicator that the government believes UFOs were real is

the heavy investment in controlled gravity and antigravity drives.

(den Schilfsee), der auch der Salzsumpf genannt wird. Dieser liegt
über 300 Li von dem Yü-Tore und dem Sperrtore Yang-kuan und ist
300 Li lang und breit. Das Wasser ist stationär und nimmt weder im
Winter noch im Sommer ab oder zu. Der Fluß soll sodann unter der
Erde weiterfließen und bei Tseih-shih wieder zutage treten, von wo
an er den Gelben Fluß Chinas bildet.»
„Das Folgende ist ein Auszug des Berichtes, den wir in dem
Tsien-Han-shu über die politischen Verhältnisse zwischen China und
Lau-lan während des ersten Jahrhunderts vor Christi Geburt finden.
„Kaiser Wu-ti, heißt es, wünschte, mit Ta-wan und den
umliegenden Ländern Verbindung zu unterhalten, und schickte
wiederholt Gesandte dorthin. Der Weg derselben ging über Lau-lan,
aber die Einwohner von Lau-lan beunruhigten im Verein mit dem Ku-
tse-Volke die Reise der Beamten und griffen Wang-Kuei, einen der
Gesandten, an und raubten ihn aus. Doch nicht genug damit, die
Bewohner von Lau-lan machten sich den Chinesen auch dadurch
verhaßt, daß sie den Heun-nu (Hunnen) als Spione dienten und
diesen wiederholt bei der Ausplünderung chinesischer Reisender
halfen. Dergleichen konnte nicht geduldet werden. Daher rüstete
Wu-ti eine Expedition gegen den feindlich gesinnten Staat aus. Chao
Po-nu wurde mit einem Heere von 10000 Mann ausgesandt, um das
Ku-tse-Volk zu strafen, während der Gesandte Wang-Kuei, der
wiederholt unter den Übergriffen der Lau-laner gelitten hatte, Befehl
erhielt, Chao Po-nu als Unterfeldherr zu begleiten. An der Spitze von
700 Mann leichter Kavallerie vorrückend, nahm dieser den König
von Lau-lan gefangen, eroberte Ku-tse und jagte, auf das Ansehen
seines Kriegsheeres vertrauend, auch den Staaten, die Vasallen von
Wu-sun und Ta-wan waren, Respekt ein. Die Lau-laner unterwarfen
sich bald und schickten Tribut an Kaiser Wu-ti. Doch ihre
Unterwerfung erboste ihre Bundesgenossen, die Hunnen, und es
dauerte gar nicht lange, so wurden sie von diesen angegriffen.
Daher schickte der König von Lau-lan, um seine beiden mächtigen
Nachbarn zu besänftigen, einen seiner Söhne als Geisel zu den
Hunnen und einen zweiten dem Kaiser von China. So endete die
erste Episode der Beziehungen zwischen China und dem
Königreiche von Lau-lan.
„Aber noch mehr Unruhen standen Lau-lan bevor. Kaiser Wu-ti
mußte aus irgendeinem Grunde noch eine Strafexpedition gegen Ta-
wan und die Hunnen schicken. Die Hunnen fanden das chinesische
Heer so furchtbar, daß sie es für das Klügste hielten, jeden direkten
Zusammenstoß mit ihm zu vermeiden, was sie aber nicht hinderte, in
Lau-lan, dessen Bewohner noch immer mit ihnen im Bunde standen,
Truppen in Hinterhalte zu legen. Diese Truppen beunruhigten Wu-tis
Armee unaufhörlich. Die Chinesen kamen bald dahinter, daß die
Lau-laner im geheimen Bundesgenossen der Hunnen waren, und
infolgedessen wurde General Jen-wan ausgesandt, um sie zu
züchtigen. Jen-wan drang bis an das Stadttor vor, welches ihm
geöffnet wurde, und machte dem König Vorwürfe über seine
Verräterei. Der König antwortete entschuldigend: «Wenn ein kleiner
Staat zwischen zwei großen Reichen liegt, zwingt ihn die
Notwendigkeit, mit beiden im Bunde zu stehen, sonst hat er nie
Frieden; jetzt aber wünsche ich, mein Königreich den Grenzen des
chinesischen Reiches einzuverleiben.» Diesen Worten vertrauend,
setzte ihn der Kaiser wieder auf den Thron und beauftragte ihn, ein
wachsames Auge auf die Bewegungen der Hunnen zu haben.
„Der König starb im Jahre 92 v. Chr. Eine Thronfolgefrage
entstand. Man wird sich erinnern, daß einer der Söhne des
verstorbenen Königs sich als Geisel am chinesischen Hofe befand.
Nun schickten die Lau-laner eine Petition an den Kaiser, er möge
ihnen den als Geisel gesandten Prinzen wiederschicken, damit
dieser den ledigen Thron besteige. Der Prinz hatte sich jedoch nicht
der Gunst des Kaisers erfreut; er war tatsächlich die ganze Zeit, die
er in China weilte, im Palaste des Seidenwurmhauses in einer
seinem Range entsprechenden Haft gefangen gehalten worden.
Daher fand die Petition bei Wu-ti kein williges Ohr, sondern er gab
die diplomatische Antwort: «Ich liebe den Prinzen, meinen Gast,
sehr und bin nicht gesonnen, ihn von meiner Seite zu lassen.» Der
Kaiser schlug dann den Bittstellern vor, sie sollten den nächsten
Sohn des toten Königs mit der Königswürde bekleiden.
„Das taten die Lau-laner auch. Aber der neue König regierte nur
kurze Zeit, und als er starb, wurde die Nachfolgerfrage wieder
brennend. Diesmal dachten die Hunnen, die, wie wir wissen, auch
einen Lau-lan-Prinzen als Geisel an ihrem Hofe hatten, daß dies
eine passende Gelegenheit sei, ihren verlorenen Einfluß auf diesen
Staat wiederzuerlangen. Deshalb schickten sie den Prinzen zurück
und setzten ihn auf den Thron. Dieser gelungene Handstreich
beunruhigte die Chinesen, die ihren Einfluß durch Bestechungen
und Intrigen wiederzugewinnen suchten. Sie machten keinen
direkten Versuch, den Schützling der Hunnen zu entthronen,
schickten aber an ihn einen Gesandten, der ihn aufforderte, dem
chinesischen Hofe einen Besuch abzustatten, wo ihm, wie der
Gesandte sagte, der Kaiser reiche Geschenke machen würde. Der
Kaiser und der Gesandte konnten jedoch nicht ahnen, daß sie hier
auch mit der Verschlagenheit einer Frau zu rechnen hatten. Die
Stiefmutter des Königs war dort und riet ihm, indem sie sagte: “«Dein
königlicher Vorgänger sandte zwei Söhne als Geiseln nach China;
keiner von ihnen ist je zurückgekehrt; ist es da billig, daß du gehen
sollst?» Daher verabschiedete der König den Gesandten mit dem
Bescheid, daß «die Angelegenheiten des Reiches ihn, da er den
Thron erst eben bestiegen habe, noch derartig in Anspruch nähmen,
daß er den chinesischen Hof nicht eher als in zwei Jahren besuchen
könne».
„Obgleich das Verhältnis zwischen dem neuen König und dem
Kaiser ohne Zweifel gespannt war, war es noch nicht zu offenen
Feindseligkeiten zwischen ihnen gekommen. Nun aber kam das
Ereignis, welches der Unabhängigkeit des Staates Lau-lan ein Ende
machen sollte. Am Ostrande von Lau-lan, wo dieses Land an China
grenzte, scheint eine Örtlichkeit, der Peh-lung-Wall genannt, gelegen
zu haben. Dieser Platz lag auf der großen Heerstraße von China
über Lau-lan nach den westlichen Ländern; er litt an Dürre und hatte
keine Weiden. Die Lau-laner wurden oft von den Chinesen
aufgefordert, Führer, Wasser und Proviant nach diesem Platze zu
schicken, wenn durchreisende Beamte dessen bedurften. Hierbei
wurden die Ortseinwohner oft von chinesischen Soldaten brutal
behandelt. Dadurch entstanden Reibungen; aber die Lage wurde
noch verschlimmert durch die Hunnen, welche die Lau-laner immer
im geheimen gegen die Chinesen aufhetzten. Schließlich
beschlossen die Lau-laner, alle freundschaftlichen Beziehungen zu
Wu-ti abzubrechen, und ermordeten einige seiner Gesandten, als
diese durch das Gebiet von Lau-lan reisten. Diese Verräterei wurde
dem chinesischen Hofe durch Hui Tu-chi, den jüngeren Bruder des
Königs, hinterbracht, welcher, nachdem er sich unter die Oberhoheit
des Han-Kaisers gestellt hatte, mit dem Plane umging, seinen
älteren Bruder vom Throne zu stoßen. Infolgedessen wurde im Jahre
77 v. Chr. der chinesische General Fu-keae-tsu ausgeschickt, um
dem König das Leben zu nehmen. Fu-keae-tsu wählte sich
schleunigst einige Begleiter aus und begab sich nach Lau-lan. Er
hatte vorher das Gerücht verbreiten lassen, daß er beauftragt sei, zu
freundschaftlichen Untersuchungen nach einem Nachbarstaate zu
reisen, und daß er dem König Geschenke zu überbringen habe. Fu-
keae-tsu wurde bei seiner Ankunft von dem König, der nichts Böses
ahnte, zu einem großartigen Feste eingeladen. Als der König
betrunken war, gab Fu seinen Begleitern ein Zeichen, und nun
wurde der König von hinten erstochen. Sein Kopf wurde vom Leibe
getrennt und über dem Nordtore der Stadt aufgehängt. Zur
Belohnung für seinen Verrat wurde Hui Tu-chi an Stelle seines
Bruders zum König eingesetzt und das Königreich unter dem neuen
Namen Shen-Shen, auf den der Lehnsbrief ausgefertigt wurde,
wiederhergestellt. Damit dem Ansehen des neuen Regenten nichts
mangeln sollte, erhielt er eine Dame des kaiserlichen Hofes zur
Gemahlin, und als Hui Tu-chi die chinesische Hauptstadt verließ, um
sich in sein Reich zu begeben, wurden ihm beim Abschied reiche
Ehrenbezeigungen erwiesen. Auf diese Weise gelangte er auf den
Thron. Doch er fühlte sich in seiner neuen Stellung nicht sicher. Weil
er ein chinesischer Schützling war, betrachtete ihn das Volk, über
welches er herrschen sollte, mit Mißtrauen. Außerdem hatte der tote
König einen Sohn hinterlassen, und Hui Tu-chi lebte in beständiger
Furcht, von diesem ermordet zu werden. Daher forderte Hui Tu-chi
den Kaiser auf, in Lau-lan eine Militärkolonie zu errichten, und zwar
in der Stadt E-tun, wo das Land, wie er sagte, «reich war und guten
Ertrag gab». Dies geschah, und der Kaiser schickte einen
Reiterobersten mit 40 Mann nach E-tun, um «die Felder zu bestellen
und das Volk zu beruhigen». So gelang es dem großen Han-
Monarchen, seine Macht über das Land Lau-lan oder Shen-shen zu
erstrecken.
„Um die Zeit, als diese Chroniken geschrieben wurden, was
wahrscheinlich um Christi Geburt herum geschah, zählte, wie uns
berichtet wird, das Königreich Shen-shen 1570 Familien, was neben
2912 Mann geübten Truppen eine Bevölkerung von 14100 Personen
ausmachte.
„Hinsichtlich der physischen Charakterzüge des Landes sagt das
Tsien-Han-shu (von Herrn A. Wylie ins Englische übersetzt):
„«Das Land ist sandig und salzig, und es gibt dort wenig
angebaute Felder. In betreff des Getreides und der
Ackerbauerzeugnisse ist die Gegend auf die benachbarten Reiche
angewiesen. Das Land bringt Nephrit, Binsen in Menge, Tamarisken,
Elaecocca vernicia und weißes Gras hervor. Die Bevölkerung treibt
ihr Vieh überall auf die Weide, wo es genügend Wasser und Gras
finden kann. Die Leute besitzen Esel, Pferde und Kamele. Sie
können für Kriegsbedarf dieselbe Art Waffen anfertigen wie die Leute
in Tso-kiang.»
„Soweit gehen also die in dem Tsien-Han-shu enthaltenen
Nachrichten. Hören wir, was Fa-Heen von Lau-lan sagt, durch
welches Land er im fünften Jahrhundert n. Chr. reiste, als er sich von
China nach Indien begab, um sich die heiligen Bücher des
Buddhismus zu verschaffen. Die englische Übersetzung ist von Dr.
J. Legge.
„«Nachdem sie 17 Tage gereist waren, welche Entfernung wir auf
etwa 1500 Li (von Tun-huang) schätzen können, erreichten die
Pilger das Königreich Shen-shen, ein kupiertes, hügeliges Land mit
magerem, unfruchtbarem Boden. Die Kleidungsstücke der
gewöhnlichen Leute sind einfach und gleichen den in unserem
Lande Han gewebten; einige tragen Filz und andere Serge oder
härene Stoffe. Der König gehorchte unserem Gesetze, und in dem
Königreiche gibt es wohl mehr als 4000 Mönche, die alle das
Hinayana (das kleine Erlösungsmittel) studieren. Die breiteren
Schichten der Bevölkerung dieses und anderer Königreiche in dieser
Gegend, wie auch die Sramanen (Mönche) leben alle auf indische
Weise, diese jedoch strenger, jene etwas freier. Hier hielten sich die
Pilger ungefähr einen Monat auf und setzten dann ihre Reise fort,
worauf sie ein fünfzehntägiger Marsch nach Nordwesten nach dem
Lande Wu-e führte. Hier gab es über 4000 Mönche, die alle das
Hinayana studierten.»“
„Hsian-Tsang (629–645 n. Chr.) passierte zweihundert Jahre
nach Fa-Heen auf der Rückreise von Indien Lau-lan, aber seine
Nachrichten von dem Lande sind außerordentlich dürftig. Wir
erfahren nur, daß er, nachdem er die mit Mauern umgebene, aber
verlassene Stadt Tsche-mo-to-na oder Nimo verlassen hatte, 1000 Li
in nordöstlicher Richtung reiste und Na-po-po erreichte, welches
dasselbe ist wie Lau-lan.“
Aus diesen von Macartney zusammengestellten Angaben
ersehen wir, daß Lôu-lan seinerzeit eine gewisse Bedeutung hatte.
Wahrscheinlich würde man durch fortgesetzte Ausgrabungen noch
reichere Funde machen können als die, von denen ich kurz berichtet
habe.
 Sechstes Kapitel.
Ein Nivellement durch die
Lopwüste.

A m 10. März frühmorgens wurde es im Lager unruhig; wir wollten

von unserer festen Operationsbasis aufbrechen und die stille
Stadt wieder ihrer tausendjährigen Ruhe überlassen. Wird je wieder
ein abendländischer Pilger in den Mauern von Lôu-lan zu Gaste
sein?
Drei Eissäcke wurden den Kamelen geopfert, die kauen durften,
soviel sie wollten; die Last war auf jeden Fall zu schwer. Die
eingeheimste Ernte an Schnitzereien und anderen Dingen wurde zu
Packen gebunden und das Gepäck geordnet. Die Karawane sollte
hier in zwei Partien geteilt werden. Ich wollte südwärts gehen, um
ein Präzisionsnivellement durch die Wüste nach dem Kara-koschun
auszuführen. Als Begleiter hatte ich Schagdur, Kutschuk, Chodai
Kullu und Chodai Värdi ausersehen. Wir brauchten nur vier Kamele,
eines für das Gepäck und drei für Eis (Abb. 216). Ich nahm nur das
Unentbehrlichste an Proviant und Kleidern, Instrumente, alles zum
Nivellieren Nötige, die halbe Jurte und das halbe Bett mit; die Leute
konnten unter freiem Himmel schlafen. Die Frühlingswärme war
bereits so stark, daß der Ofen überflüssig war. Der Proviant wog
nicht viel. Das Wenige, was noch an Reis und Brot da war, wurde in
für acht Tage berechnete Rationen geteilt.
Der übrige Teil der Karawane, Faisullah, Li Loje und Mollah,
sechs Kamele, drei Pferde, die drei Hunde und das ganze schwerere
Gepäck nebst Eis und Proviant für vier Tage sollten allein
weiterziehen.
Faisullah, der im vorigen Jahre die Wüstendurchquerung von
Altimisch-bulak an mitgemacht hatte, mußte nach Kum-tschappgan,
wo wir uns wieder treffen wollten, hinfinden können. Er hatte Befehl,
sich direkt dorthin zu begeben und dort auf unsere Ankunft zu
warten. Der Sicherheit halber erhielt er gründlichen Unterricht, wie er
sich vom Kompaß nach Südwesten führen lassen müsse. Ich war
von Faisullahs Klugheit und Vorsicht überzeugt, hielt es aber doch
für besser, alle Kartenblätter von dieser Reise, die Manuskripte und
Stäbe aus Lôu-lan, meine Notizbücher und die
Beobachtungsjournale selbst mitzunehmen. Obgleich Faisullah, wie
wir noch hören werden, ein höchst unerwartetes Abenteuer hatte,
wären die kostbaren Papiere bei ihm doch sicherer gewesen als bei
mir, wie sich noch zeigen wird!
Während die beiden Karawanen beladen wurden, brach ich auf.
Faisullah und seine beiden Kameraden halfen Chodai Värdi, der
Befehl hatte, uns mit unseren vier Kamelen nachzukommen und sich
am Abend bereitzuhalten, das Lager aufzuschlagen.
Zum Ausgangspunkte des Nivellements wählte ich den Platz an
der Basis des Turmes, wo meine Jurte gestanden hatte. Hier wurde
die 4 Meter hohe Nivellierlatte zum ersten Male aufgerichtet. Sie
wurde stets auf eine Platte gestellt, um nicht einzusinken, wenn sie
halb umgedreht wurde. Schagdur handhabte sie während der
ganzen Wanderung auf mustergültige Weise. Das Fernrohr wurde
100 Meter südlich von ihr aufgestellt, und ich machte meine erste
Ablesung, worauf Schagdur am Fernrohr vorbeiging und die Latte
zum zweiten Male 100 Meter südlich davon aufstellte — und so
weiter, Tag für Tag, bis an den Kara-koschun, wohin wir 81½
Kilometer hatten!
Der Abstand zwischen Fernrohr und Stange wurde von Kutschuk
und Chodai Kullu mit einem 50 Meter langen Bandmaße gemessen,
das also jedesmal zweimal auf der Erde abrollte. Das Fernrohr mit
seinem Stativ wurde beim Weitergehen von Kutschuk getragen. Ich
selbst hatte die Ablesungen, Kompaßpeilungen, Marschroute und
Aufzeichnungen über den Charakter des Terrains zu machen.
Bevor die Leute an diese für sie neue Arbeit gewöhnt waren,
kamen wir nur langsam weiter; aber nicht lange dauerte es, so ging
alles seinen regelrechten Gang, und es gab keine unnötigen
Verzögerungen mehr.
In dieser Richtung, von Lôu-lan nach Süden, war es sehr deutlich
zu merken, daß wir die Uferlinie des früheren Sees passierten. Die
toten Bäume, Sträucher und Schilfstoppeln hörten mit einem Schlag
auf, und nun waren wir auf ödem, graugelbem Lehmboden ohne alle
Vegetation, wo wir uns ohne Zweifel auf einem alten Seeboden
befanden.
Einundneunzigmal waren die Stange und das Fernrohr
vorgerückt, bevor wir es, nach einem Marsche von 9140 Meter, an
der Zeit hielten zu lagern. Es fing an dämmerig zu werden. Aber
Chodai Värdi mit den vier Kamelen war nicht zu erblicken. Wir
spähten von Hügeln und Kegeln nach ihm aus, doch der Mann war
spurlos verschwunden. Hatte er sich verirrt? Hatte er mich
mißverstanden und Faisullah begleitet oder war er bei den Ruinen
geblieben?
An einem Punkte, wo wieder dürres Holz auftrat, zündeten wir
auf einem Hügel ein großes Signalfeuer an. Schagdur begab sich
trotz der Dunkelheit auf die Suche. Ich war in größter Unruhe. Wenn
Chodai Värdi sich verirrt hatte, war er verloren. Er war noch nie in
der Gegend gewesen und hatte keine Ahnung, wohin er gehen
mußte, um nach dem Kara-koschun zu gelangen. Und fanden wir ihn
nicht wieder, so würde natürlich auch unsere Lage — ohne Wasser
und ohne Nahrung — kritisch sein; es war bis an den See noch so
weit, daß unsere Kräfte schwerlich so weit reichen konnten, und
nach der isolierten Quelle zurückzukehren, wäre ebenso verzweifelt
gewesen. Doch am meisten von allem quälte mich der Gedanke:
sollten alle Resultate einer viermonatigen Wanderung nur durch die
Dummheit eines Dieners verlorengehen?
Wir zerbrachen uns den Kopf und lauschten und stapelten alles,
was Holz hieß, auf das Feuer, das hoch und wild in der sonst
undurchdringlichen Dunkelheit flammte. Kein Laut war zu hören. Die
Wüste lag so tot und öde da, als gehörte sie nicht einem von
Menschen bewohnten Planeten an. Statt uns nach der
anstrengenden Arbeit und Fußwanderung des Tages an Wasser
laben können, hielt uns nun diese unheimliche, düstere Unruhe
gepackt. Es bedurfte jetzt nur noch eines Nebelsturmes — dann
wäre alles verloren gewesen!
So schlimm sollte es nicht werden. Im nächtlichen Dunkel
ertönten tappende Schritte: Chodai Värdi kam mit den Kamelen
wohlbehalten an! Ich war froh, nichts eingebüßt zu haben, so daß ich
ganz vergaß, ihm seine wohlverdiente Schelte zukommen zu lassen.
Er erklärte, daß er durch die Form der Lehmterrassen gezwungen
worden sei, sich zu weit nach rechts zu halten, und nachher weder
uns noch eine Spur habe wiederfinden können. Als er abends im
Südwesten ein Feuer gesehen habe, sei ihm endlich klar geworden,
daß er sich auf Irrwegen befinde — dies war nämlich Faisullahs
Feuer. Er sei also umgekehrt und habe schon aus sehr weiter Ferne
unser Feuer erblickt, auf das er nun losgesteuert sei. Es war wirklich
ein Wunder, daß keines der Kamele sich beim Überschreiten dieser
unzähligen, finsteren, gähnenden Gräben in der Dunkelheit die
Beine gebrochen hatte.
In aller Eile wurde das Lager aufgeschlagen und der Kessel auf
das Feuer gesetzt. Schagdur war und blieb fort, und Chodai Kullu
wurde mit der Flinte ausgeschickt, um einige Signalschüsse
abzufeuern. Daß er weit ging, konnte man hören, da die Schüsse
allmählich immer schwächer wurden und schließlich in der Ferne
erstarben. Doch er kam unverrichteter Sache wieder, und wir gingen
zur Ruhe.
Daß dieses Abenteuer noch so ablief, war eine Fügung der
Vorsehung; aber daß ein Mensch wie Chodai Värdi, der sonst stets
gesunden Verstand gezeigt, so unglaublich dumm sein konnte, ist
unerklärlich. Er war 12 Stunden kreuz und quer in der Wüste
umhergeirrt, während wir nur 9,1 Kilometer zurückgelegt hatten. Vom
Lager konnte man sogar noch den Lehmturm von Lôu-lan sehen.
Um Schagdur hatte ich nicht Angst. Ich kannte ihn zur Genüge, um
zu wissen, daß er sich allein nach dem Kara-koschun durchschlagen
würde. Er hatte stets einen Kompaß bei sich und wußte auf meinen
Karten gut Bescheid.
Am folgenden Morgen erwachte ich bei einem vollen Sturm, der
dicke Sandwolken durch die Rinne trieb, in der wir lagerten; sie
zogen in ihr dahin wie Wasser in seinem Bette, und der Sand feilte
die Seiten der Lehmterrassen. Die öde Landschaft sah in dieser
neuen Beleuchtung, die der des gestrigen Feuers so unähnlich war,
geradezu schauerlich fremd aus. Nivellieren war ganz unmöglich; wir
mußten liegenbleiben. Schagdur fand sich nicht ein; er hatte in dem
heimtückischen Sturme offenbar unsere Spur verloren.
Am Vormittag hielt ich mich meistens bei den Kamelen auf. Ich
saß bei ihnen, streichelte ihnen den Kopf und klopfte ihnen den
Rücken. Wenn sie nur geahnt hätten, wie ich sie schätzte, wie
dankbar ich ihnen für die Dienste war, die sie mir geleistet hatten,
und wie leid es mir tat, daß ich sie einem Führer anvertraut hatte,
der sie nutzlos gequält und ihre empfindlichen Fußschwielen
unnötigerweise in der harten Lehmwüste angestrengt hatte. Ruhig,
zufrieden und würdig wie immer lagen sie da und glaubten wohl, es
sei notwendig gewesen, 40 Kilometer in der Wüste umherzuirren.
Ohne Rücksicht auf die Folgen ließ ich ihnen einen Sack Kamisch
und einen Sack Eis geben. Doch welch ein Lohn wartete ihrer
später! Alle, außer einem, starben in Tibet.
Mein Erstaunen war grenzenlos, als um die Mittagszeit Schagdur
mit leichten, elastischen Schritten aus dem Staubnebel auftauchte!
Der prächtige Junge, der einen ganzen Stamm von Muselmännern
aufwiegt, war, seit er uns am vorigen Abend um 5 Uhr verlassen
hatte, unausgesetzt auf den Beinen gewesen. In der Nacht hatte er
Faisullahs Feuer gesehen und war dorthingeeilt. Ich hatte nämlich
Faisullah befohlen, das Feuer bis spät in die Nacht zu unterhalten,
nur um der Kuriosität halber feststellen zu können, ob es bei uns auf
20 Kilometer Abstand sichtbar wäre. Von Faisullah hatte Schagdur
einen kleinen Vorrat Reis und Eis erhalten, denn, als sich jetzt der
Sturm erhob, hatten sie gefürchtet, daß er uns nicht wiederfinden
würde.
 Er wollte es versuchen. Glücklicherweise hatte er auf dem
Hinwege die Kompaßpeilungen aufgezeichnet. Ein paarmal hatte er
die Spur von Chodai Värdis Kamelen gesehen, sie dann aber wieder
verloren.
Daß er uns fand, war ein Meisterstück sondergleichen. Nur ein
Burjat, der sein Leben unter freiem Himmel in der Wildnis
zugebracht hat und dazu Kosak ist, bringt derartiges fertig. Denn
man muß bedenken, daß die Lager 20 Kilometer voneinander
entfernt lagen, der Boden eben wie eine Wasserfläche war und man
im Nebelsturme höchstens 50 Meter weit vor sich sehen konnte und
alle Spuren zugeweht waren. Wenn ein Mensch solche Beweise von
Tüchtigkeit, Klugheit und Treue gibt, kann man ihm alles anvertrauen
— und das tat ich später auch ein paarmal.
Es machte uns freilich einen Strich durch die Rechnung, daß wir
einen ganzen Tag verloren, doch was tat das, da der Himmel mir den
schweren Verlust, der mir drohte, erspart hatte? Wir versuchten
unseren Weg fortzusetzen, aber es ging nicht. Wenn der Wind 11
Meter in der Sekunde macht, schwankt die Stange und kann
abbrechen, und das Fernrohr zittert auf seinem Stativ. Wir mußten
uns gedulden und noch eine Nacht auf diesem wüsten Platze
zubringen.
Am 12. März war ein herrlicher Tag, und wir begannen früh,
arbeiteten bis Sonnenuntergang und hielten nur um 1 Uhr zehn
Minuten Rast zur Ablesung der meteorologischen Instrumente. Jetzt
führte Chodai Kullu die Kamele, mußte aber ganz in unserer Nähe
bleiben. Der Weg ging nach Südsüdosten. Die Winderosionsfurchen
ziehen sich nach Südwesten, und wir mußten über die zwischen
ihnen liegenden Rücken hinüber. Für uns Fußgänger ging es wohl
an, aber für die Kamele war es sehr ermüdend. Sie mußten in weiten
Umwegen geführt werden, während wir mit den Instrumenten in
geraden Linien vorrückten.
Abwechslung bietet sich dem Auge nicht mehr, aber das kann
man in einer Wüste auch nicht verlangen. Ein Unterschied gegen die
westlichere Linie des vorigen Jahres war, daß wir hier weniger, ja
fast gar keinen Sand hatten. In den Rinnen ist der Boden oft mit
einer fußdicken Schicht von feinem Staub bedeckt, in den man
einsinkt wie in Wasser. Meistens haben wir jedoch harten
Lehmboden, und bald schmerzen uns von dem ewigen Springen die
Füße.
Gegen Sonnenuntergang mußte Chodai Kullu vorausgehen und
das Lager aufschlagen, so daß alles fertig war, als wir mit der
Tagesarbeit aufhörten. Der Fixpunkt, wo die Arbeit unterbrochen und
am folgenden Morgen wiederaufgenommen werden muß, wird so
gewählt, daß irgendwelche Verrückung während der Nacht
ausgeschlossen ist.
Mit wachsendem Interesse rechnete ich abends aus, was die
Zahlenreihen zu sagen hatten. Heute zeigten sie mir, daß wir auf
11201 Meter 2,466 Meter gefallen waren. Ich würde diese
ermüdende, die Geduld auf die Probe stellende Arbeit nicht
ausgehalten haben, wenn ich nicht eine wichtige Entdeckung
erwartet hätte. Die nivellierte Linie sollte das entscheidende Urteil
über das Lop-nor-Problem fällen. Ihr Profil würde zeigen, ob es
möglich oder unmöglich war, daß im nördlichen Teile der Wüste Lop
ein See gelegen hat.
Frühauf und gleich an die Arbeit, ist jetzt morgens die Losung.
Der Boden wurde heute günstiger. Die Jardang folgen nicht mehr
so dicht aufeinander und sind niedriger, wir brauchen nicht soviel zu
klettern. Aber Schneckenschalen sind allgemein, manchmal ist der
Boden von ihnen ganz weißgetüpfelt. Kleine Höcker auf der
Oberfläche abgerechnet, ist der Boden so eben wie ein Fußboden.
War diese Gegend für das Auge trostlos und einförmig, so war
sie für das Nivellement um so bequemer. Keine Hindernisse stellten
sich uns in den Weg; wir gingen in gerader Linie, rasch und ohne
Unterbrechung. Wenn das Fernrohr mit der Wasserwage eingestellt
ist und ich es um den Horizont führe, liegt dieser überall in genau
demselben Abstande von den horizontalen Fäden des
Fadenkreuzes.
Fünf Scharen Enten streichen gen Norden. Kutschuk vermutete
witzig, daß unsere Entsatzexpedition unter Tokta Ahun sie vom
Nordufer des Kara-koschun vertrieben habe. Wahrscheinlich ist, daß
die Enten sich im Winter an diesem See und im Sommer am
Bagrasch-köll aufhalten. Eine Eintagsfliege machte eine Runde um
uns und verschwand wie ein funkelnder Smaragd in südlicher
Richtung.
Während dieses Tages stiegen wir 2,763 Meter und befanden
uns 0,11 Meter höher als im Ausgangspunkte in Lôu-lan. Wir waren
mit anderen Worten auf 32 Kilometer Wegstrecke 11 Zentimeter
gestiegen! Schon in diesem Lager hatte ich also den Schlüssel des
Lop-nor-Problems gefunden. Die beiden ersten Tage waren wir
gefallen, den dritten gestiegen; wir hatten also eine deutliche
Depression überschritten, und diese ist es, die das ehemalige Bett
des Lop-nor repräsentiert. Das Resultat der Arbeit der folgenden
Tage würde auf diesen Schluß nicht mehr einwirken. Wir waren
durch ein Becken gegangen, gleichviel in welchem Niveau sich der
Kara-koschun im Verhältnis zum Ausgangspunkte befinden mochte;
und daß dieses Becken einst Wasser enthalten hatte, wurde durch
die Schneckenschalen und viele andere bereits erwähnte Umstände
bewiesen.
Mit dem Schlage 7 Uhr ertönte ein pfeifendes Brausen im
Nordosten, und ein paar Minuten später fuhr der schwarze Sturm mit
ungezügelter Wut über den Boden, der ihm nicht das geringste
Hindernis in den Weg stellte. Die Sonne war in außergewöhnlicher
Weise in dichten Wolken untergegangen, und der Tag war drückend
schwül gewesen. Alle notwendigen Vorsichtsmaßregeln wurden
getroffen, der Fixpunkt festgeschlossen, die Jurte gründlich
festgemacht, die Feuer ausgelöscht und, nachdem die Kamele mit
den Köpfen auf die vom Winde abgewandte Seite gebracht worden
waren, bereitete sich jeder auf das, was kommen sollte, vor; es
wurde still im Lager, und nur der Sturm heulte um uns herum. Der
Flugsand drang durch das Zelttuch; draußen war es stockfinster, und
keine Sterne waren zu sehen.
Jeden Abend um 9 Uhr stellte Schagdur das Kochthermometer,
das ich stets selbst ablas. Als er von meiner Jurte nach seinem
Schlafplatze neben der Küchengeschirr enthaltenden Kiste
zurückkehren wollte, fand er sich, trotzdem es nur 15 Schritte waren,
nicht zurecht und verirrte sich. Eine halbe Stunde später hörte ich
schwaches Rufen aus einer ganz anderen Richtung. Ich rief aus
vollem Halse, und Schagdur fand sich so nach der Jurte zurück. Er
war die ganze Zeit gekrochen, denn Stehen war unmöglich, und
pechfinster war es auf allen Seiten. Nur auf folgende Weise konnte
er seinen Platz finden; ich hielt eine kleine Spalte im Zelttuche offen,
und den Blick auf diese gerichtet, kroch er rückwärts, bis er bei der
Kiste anlangte. Wer nie einen solchen Sturm erlebt hat, kann sich
keinen Begriff davon machen. Man wird verdreht und will nur gehen,
immerzu gehen, weiß aber nicht, wohin der Weg führt; der Ortssinn
scheint gelähmt zu sein, man geht im Kreise, glaubt aber in gerader
Linie zu gehen. Es ist eine Art Wüstensturmkrankheit, die näher mit
der Platzkrankheit als mit See- und Bergkrankheit verwandt ist; sie
schlägt sich auf das Gehirn. Wäre Chodai Värdi von solch einem
Sturme überfallen worden, so wäre er verloren gewesen.
Am folgenden Morgen waren die Folgen des schwarzen Sturmes
deutlich erkennbar. Um meine Jurte hatte der Sand eine Ringdüne
gebildet, und auch hinter den Köpfen der Kamele hatten sich große
Sandhaufen gebildet. Sobald sich ein Hindernis im Wege des
Flugsandes erhebt, entstehen Dünen; sonst treibt er nach Westen.
Glücklicherweise hörte der Sturm um 11 Uhr auf, und wir konnten
nach Süden weiterziehen.
Die Wüste ist trostlos einförmig; der Boden besteht aus einem
Gemenge, das die Eingeborenen „Schor“ nennen. Sand, Staub, Kalk
und Salz, alles erstarrt und zu einer ziegelharten Masse
zusammengebacken. Das Salz ist manchmal in dünnen Schollen
abgesondert. Als das Wasser verschwunden war, scheint diese
Masse sich durch Austrocknen ausgedehnt zu haben, denn sie ist zu
unzähligen, nach allen möglichen Richtungen laufenden Wülsten
aufgesprungen; die Höhe dieser beträgt manchmal 75 Zentimeter.
Hier gibt es absolut keine Spur von vegetativem oder animalem
Leben, nicht einmal eine Schneckenschale. Es ist offenbar der
Boden eines Salzsees, und wir wissen auch, daß die Chinesen den
Lop-nor in alten Zeiten den „Salzsee“ genannt haben. Auch der
Kara-koschun hat abgeschnürte Teile, deren Wasser salzig ist, und
im Süden dieses Sees sieht der früher überschwemmte Boden
genau so aus wie hier — am südlichen Ufergebiete des alten Lop-
nor.

Die Steigung fährt fort, obgleich nur mit 0,644 Meter auf 11250
Meter. In dem heutigen Lager befanden wir uns also um 0,754 Meter
über dem Ausgangpunkte. Dies schien des Guten zuviel zu werden;
der Kara-koschun konnte doch nicht höher liegen als Lôu-lan! Alle
meine Gedanken und Grübeleien drehten sich um diese interessante
Nivellierungslinie. Die folgenden Tage, deren Verlauf ich mit
Spannung entgegensah, würden zeigen, ob wir nicht eine flache
Protuberanz oder Wasserscheide zwischen dem früheren und dem
jetzigen Seebecken zu passieren hatten.
15. März. Schor, den ganzen Tag Schor, tödlich einförmig! Kein
Gegenstand, auf den man das Fernrohr richten könnte, nichts, was
lockt, als die Sehnsucht, aus dieser langweiligen Wüste
herauszukommen!
Das Wetter jedoch war herrlich, und um 1 Uhr stieg die
Temperatur nur auf +11 Grad. Aber unsere Lage war insofern
