Ans: Addressing his friend the old man asked them to sit down and rest themselves there on that bench. Then
he added that his good wife Baucis had gone to see what they could have for supper.
b) She said to her son that she was old and lonely and asked him if he had no pity on her loneliness.
Ans: She said to her son, “I am old and lonely, don’t you have pity on my loneliness?”

a) “How is mother, dear Paggotty ? Is she very angry with me?” asked David. “No, not angry," she replied.
Ans: David called Paggotty dearly and asked how his mother was and if she was angry with him. She replied
that she was not very angry.
b) The boy humbly requested the teacher to excuse him and promised that he would never do so again.”
Ans: The boy said to the teacher, “Excuse me, I promise I shall never do so again.”

a) The sea-god cried, “Do not be afraid, noble Prince, I have taken pity on you and will help you."
Ans: The sea-god cried to noble Prince and asked him not to be afraid. He also said that he had taken pity on
him and would help him.
b) He advised his sons not to quarrel amongst themselves when he was dead but to remain united.
Ans: He said to his sons, "Do not quarrel amongst yourselves when I am dead, but to remain united.”

a) “My son”, said the doctor, “You are suffering from jaundice. Take this medicine regularly and don’t take
fish or meat.”
Ans: The doctor addressed the boy as his son and said that he was suffering from jaundice. He also asked him
to take that medicine regularly and not to take fish or meat.
b) The teacher asked the student if he had prepared his lesson. He replied politely that he had not.
Ans: The teacher said to the student, “Have you prepared your lesson?” The boy said, “Excuse me sir, I have
not.”

a) Jadav said to me, “ You are ill today. So I shall not play with you.”
Ans: Jadav told me that I was ill that day and so he would not play with me.
6. AHSEC – 2000
a) He said to me, “When will you go to Delhi? I shall send my brother with you.”
Ans: He asked me when I would go to Delhi. He also said that he would send his brother with me.
b) I asked Rita what she was doing. Rita replied that she was preparing her lessons.
Ans: I said to Rita, “What are you doing?” Rita replied, “I am preparing my lessons.”

a) Ramen said to the boy, “What’s the matter? Why are you crying? Be careful."
Ans: Ramen asked the boy what the matter was and why he was crying. He also told him to be careful.
b) My friend told me that he was very thirsty and requested me to give him a glass of water.
Ans: My friend said to me, “I am very thirsty. Please give me a glass of water.”

a) The boy said to the teacher, “Sir, I am weak in English and seek your advice.”
Ans: The boy told the teacher that he was weak in English and sought his advice.
“Read the text throughly and try to express your ideas in simple correct English”, said the teacher.
Ans: The teacher asked him to read the text throughly and try to express his ideas in simple correct English.
b) I asked my friend why he looked so sad. He replied that his father was seriously ill and there was little hope
for his recovery.
Ans: I said to my friend, “Why do you look so sad?” He replied, “My father is seriously ill and there is little
hope for his recovery.”

a) "I’ve just bought a car”, said Peter, “but is not insured yet so I can’t take you for a ride.”
Ans: Peter said that he had just bought a car but it was not insured till then so he could not take him for a ride.
b) The man said that they had been there for two and a half years and were going to stay another six months.
Ans: The man said, “We have been here for two and a half years and are going to stay another six months.”
a) The traveller said to the peasant, “ Can you show me the nearest inn?” “Yes”, said the peasant.

Ans: The traveller asked the peasant if he could show him the nearest inn. The peasant replied in the
affirmative saying that he could.

a) “Nothing can be avoided”, said Caeser, “Which the gods have purposed. These omens appear to everyone,
not lonely to Caeser.”
Ans: Caeser said that nothing could be avoided which the gods had purposed. He added that those omens
appeared to everyone, not only to Caeser.
b) The teacher asked the student if he had prepared his lesson. The student replied politely that he had not.
Ans: The teacher said to the student, “Have you prepared your lesson?” “No sir”, said the student.
a) “Hercules”, said the Goddess of virtue, “I offer myself to you because I know you are descended from the
gods and that you have given proofs of that by your love of virtue."
Ans: The Goddess of virtue told Hercules that she offered herself to him because she knew that he was
descended from the gods and that he had given proofs of that by his love of virtue.
b) When John asked Marry whether she would help him. She replied that she would.
Ans: When John said to Marry, “Will you help me?” Marry said, "Yes, I will.”
Ans: He said that he did not wish to see any of them and so he asked them to go away.
b) The traveller asked the peasant if he could tell him the way to the nearest inn. The peasant replied that he
could.
Ans: The traveller said to the peasant, “Can you tell me the way to the nearest inn?” “Yes”, said the peasant.
a) “Rashmi”, Karan said, “I have a very important matter to discuss with you today , so you must give me
your attention.”
Ans: Karan told Rashmi that he had a very important matter to discuss with her that day and so she must give
him her attention.
b) The teacher ordered Joe to stand up and asked him why he had not prepared his lesson. He also told him
that he would write to his (Joe’s) father.
Ans: The teacher said to Joe, “ Stand up. Why have not you prepared your lesson? I shall write to your father.”

a) Rohit said to his friends, “Let us go and help the flood affected people.”
Ans: Rohit proposed to his friends that they should go and help the flood affected people.
b) I asked Priyam what she was doing. Priyam replied that she was preparing her lessons.
Ans: I said to Priyam, “What are you doing?” She replied, “ I am preparing my lessons."
a) I said to him, “How long will you stay?” He replied, "For five days.”
Ans: I asked him how long he would stay. He replied that he would stay for give days.

a) The lady said to the salesman, “What is the price of this Barbie doll?” The salesman said to her, “It is a bit
expensive. But I can give it to you at a 20 percent discount.”
Ans: The lady asked the salesman what the price of that Barbie doll was. The salesman told her that that was a
bit expensive. But he could give that to her at a 20 percent discount.
b) One day Mohan told me that he would become a doctor and leave Assam. I asked him if he knew about
medicine.
Ans: One day Mohan said to me, "I shall become a doctor and leave Assam." I said to him, "Do you know
about medicine?"
a) “Where do you go every Sunday?” I asked the girl. She replied, “I go to the church.”

Ans: I asked the girl where she went every Sunday. She replied that she went to the church.
b) The teacher asked Rumi if she had read the Bible. She replied that she hadn’t.
Ans: The teacher said to Rumi, “Have you read the Bible?” She replied, “No, I haven’t."
a) “How long do you have to wait for your train?” The woman asked me. “About an hour”, I replied.
Ans: The woman asked me how long I had to wait for my train. I replied that I had to wait about an hour.
b) I asked Ranjan where Neena lived. Ranjan replied regretfully that he didn’t know.
Ans: I said to Ranjan, “Where does Neena live?” Ranjan replied, “Sorry, I don’t Know.”

b) His mother exclaimed in sorrow that she had not a bit of bread to give him and that he had eaten up all the
provisions she had in the house the previous day.
Ans: His mother said, “Alas! I do not have a bit of bread to give you. You have eaten up all the provisions I had
in the house yesterday.”

day.
Ans: The boys said, “Hurrah! We have all passed the test and we shall celebrate our success tomorrow.”
