ABSTRACT

This study generally aims to determine the relationship of the duration of exposure on
TikTok and students study habits of the Grade 12 students in Pajo National High School.
This study was conducted at Pajo National High School-Senior High Department in Sangi
New Road, Pajo Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu, for the First Semester of the Academic Year 2023-
2024. The study utilized a correlational research design in conducting the study.
Correlational research design is significantly appropriate to this study in identifying the
relationship between students’ duration of exposure on TikTok and study habits of
Grade 12 students of Pajo Senior High School. The study used a printed survey
questionnaire which was researcher made and adapted-modified from Verginia Sijo. The
findings suggest that the Grade 12 students exhibit satisfactory study habits in terms of
scheduling, method of study and techniques, accomplishing assignments and note
taking. Importantly the research found that the amount of time these students spend on
TikTok does not significantly influence their study habits. The statistical analysis
conclusively demonstrates that the selected Grade 12 students at Pajo Senior High
School do not exhibit a significant correlation between their duration of exposure on
TikTok and their study habits. This suggests that factors other than TikTok may
influence students study habits. Thus, more in-depth research is recommended to
explore other factors that may influence students' study habits. This may involve looking
into other factors like time management skills, study environment, and sleep quality.

CHAPTER I
THE PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE

Rationale
Study habits are commonly known as the usual behavior or habitual

practices by a person to study and learn effectively. These study habits include

notetaking, scheduling, method of study and learning techniques, and accomplishing

assignments. Study habits help students make their studies easier to understand and

make their learning experience comfortable and enjoyable.

Having good study habits is essential because it enhances learning efficiency,

promotes effective time management, and reduces stress, ultimately leading to

improved academic learning and better preparation for future challenges. According to

Tus, Lubo, Rayo, and Cruz (2020) enhancing students' study habits is relevant, especially

in notetaking, reading ability, and health, thus improving their academic performance.

However, TikTok can be a distracting factor, diverting attention away from

studying. When students encounter distractions, they may choose to engage with social

media. The reasons for this behavior and how individuals handle such distractions can

vary. Distractions may lead to an increased use of social media. One possible explanation

for why users turn to social media instead of ignoring it when they should be studying

could be a lack of self-control. Research has shown that a failure of self-control is

associated with higher social media usage (Du et al., 2018).

According to Ezeji and Ezeji (2018), social media can be a distraction to

study. This has been linked to the fact that students’ engagement on social media does

not

effectively allow them to utilize their time. Reference posited that the degree of learning

depends on the amount of time the child is actively engaged in learning. It is the time

spent studying that helps students retain materials learned which will eventually boost

academic performance.

However, current observations imply that the students of Pajo Senior High

School are distracted by social media such as TikTok which can lead to procrastination,

where Pajo Senior High School students delay their study sessions in favor of browsing

TikTok. Many students struggle with maintaining focus on their studies because they

spend too much time on TikTok. Spending lots of time on TikTok means less time for

studying.

With the present necessity, the researchers aim to understand how TikTok

influence on students’ study habits. Furthermore, it aims to make recommendation to

serve as a guide to teachers and students in promoting healthy study habits.

THEORETICAL BACKGROUND

Related Theories

This study is anchored on two theories, namely, the Uses and Gratification

Theory developed by Elihu Katz and Jay Blumler (Katz and Blumler, 1974), and Self

Determination Theory developed by Edward L. Deci and Richard M. Ryan ( Deci and

Ryan, 1985).

The first theory is the Uses and Gratification theory of Katz and Blumler (1974)

it explains that individuals actively seek out specific functions from media content to

fulfill their needs and desires. This theory was coined in the early 1940s which means

people are attracted by certain benefits offered by different types of media use including

seeking entertainment, companionship or even obtaining knowledge. According to

Straubhaar et al. (2014), uses and gratifications perspectives dominate thinking about

media consumption and behavior. They further argued that it is possible to become so

deeply involved with our favorite media activity that it acts like an addictive drug. It is

within this premise that this addiction influences the study habits of the students.

In the context of TikTok, users may engage with the platform as a means of

seeking entertainment, social interaction, or even educational content. Therefore, the

influence of TikTok on study habits could be examined through the lens of how users

integrate the platform into their daily routines. By exploring how students use TikTok
and the gratifications they seek from it, we can gain insights into its influence on study

habits.

The second theory is the Self-Determination Theory which has three primary

psychological needs that the emphasis of SDT: autonomy, competence, and relatedness.

Autonomy is having control over one's life and the ability to make decisions that

are in line with their principles and interests. The need to feel capable of learning a new

skill and achieving one's goals is referred to as competence. According to relatedness, a

person must experience a sense of belonging and connection to other people. SDT

suggests that in the context of self-learning habits, students are more likely to have a

sense of autonomy and control over their learning experiences when they participate in

self-directed learning activities. The motivation and engagement levels may rise as a

result.

Related Literature

The purpose of this study is to determine the influence of TikTok on students'

study habits at Pajo National High School (Senior High Department). The present study

is influenced by a review of related literature and studies from outside and locally.

TikTok, which is widely used by people of all ages, has become an increasingly

popular application. In this app, users can create any kind of video they want and post it

to the App for anyone to see, even though most posts are people dancing in music. The

students can dance to the most popular songs and get followers from their posts.

However along with having fun, students still have to be able to focus on their
schoolwork, and distractions have the ability to pose a big challenge to getting

schoolwork done (Mekler, 2021).

The more time per week that people spend on social media, the more they

become addicted to social media (Ciplak, 2020). TikTok is capable of attracting anyone

who uses the app, which can lead to something like an addiction.

According to Tus et al., (2020) Study habits are at the core of a learner's

academic success. It is an action like reading, taking notes, conducting study groups that

students perform frequently, and regularly accomplishing the learning goals. It can be

defined as effective or counterproductive based on whether it serves the students well

(Tus, 2020). A student's daily life includes self-learning habits that make a substantial

contribution to the growth of knowledge and perceptive abilities. Self-learning habits

and attitudes are

pivotal for a student's academic success, encompassing their capacity for learning,

aspirations, and achievements, often shaped by lifelong study habits.

The study of Unwalla (2020) found that the study habits of females are better

compared to males. It has been observed that females are more self-disciplined, tend to

complete work on time, are more attentive, and tend to have better study habits as

compared to males. This highlights the study habits between male and female students

indicating that females exhibit stronger study habits compared to males.

According to Looyeh et al., (2017) there is a significant relationship between

study habits and academic performance, with the inclusion of appropriate educational

content, in particular their ability to note and read notes, education administrators and
planning staff can improve students' study habits by making them more efficient at

studying. The content type that students spend watching on TikTok can influence their

level of focus and engagement. For instance, educational content may enhance their

learning and study. Moreover, unrelated content could distract their ability to

concentrate.

According to Chris (2019) many students use social media, especially Facebook,

WhatsApp, and Twitter. They spend an increasing amount of quality time on these

networks even during lecture hours. The findings of this study suggest that social media

could negatively impact the students' study behavior, academic progress and that timed

off software should be installed to control its use. The duration of exposure spent

watching TikTok can lead to distractions for students. Spending excessive time on

TikTok can divert student's attention away from their studies, reducing their focus and

productivity.

Good study habits include planning a specific time for studying, being organized,

maintaining class notes, being attentive in class, reading the textbook, and finishing

work before deadlines (Unwalla, 2020). Additionally, Jones and Patel (2020) delved into

the impact of technology on study habits, emphasizing the need for a balance between

digital distractions and focused study time. Consistently adhering to set a schedule and

following it diligently is essential to have healthy study habits.

Students in a large introductory psychology class completed a “learning how to

learn” assignment in which they read one of four randomly assigned empirical articles

about the utility of a learning strategy (distributed practice, rereading, practice testing,

or forming mental images) and wrote a paper summarizing, analyzing, and applying
(Kramer, 2021). In order to develop effective learning habits, the method of study and

teaching techniques is important.

According to Witherby and Tauber (2019), that notes taken during lessons

mostly provide students with course materials and help them study for their exams

using these notes. Additionally, it helps students recall the important information they

learned and makes them independent (Bahrami and Nosratzadeh, 2017; Saravani, 2019;

Umaadevi and Rekha, 2019).

It is an integral part of study habits as it helps students organize information and

help them to remember the lesson. Note-taking helps students to organize their ideas

and have guidance before quizzes and exams which helps them to recall important

information.

According to Ipem and OkwaraKalu (2020) that students spend an excessive

amount of time on social media, which causes them to become distracted from their

academic activities. However, Junco and Cotten (2018) highlights that social media can

positively impact student study habits by promoting collaborative learning, information

sharing, and access to educational resources. It suggests that when used strategically,

social media platforms can enhance students' academic performance and productivity.

A study of Chen and Bryer (2021) explore how instructional strategies

integrating social media can improve student engagement, motivation, and information

retention, ultimately contributing to more effective study habits and learning outcomes.

However, it is often observed that students who are so immersed in social media

do not take care of their studies. The negative impact of social media, which requires
students to pay close attention to their educational responsibilities, could be described

as a misdirected priority in the area of time management. The enjoyment of social media

use might cause learners’ academic assignments to be delayed significantly during this

new normal education, which, if not appropriately managed, can result in academic

(Caratiquit, 2022). During this new normal education, which, if not properly managed,

can lead to academic procrastination, the use of social media may lead to a significant

delay in the completion of the academic tasks of the students (Anierobi et al. 2021).

In reviewing existing literature on the influence of Tiktok on study habits of

students, researchers identified a significant research gap: while there are extensive

studies on the influence of social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter on

students' study habits, TikTok has not been as thoroughly examined. This oversight is

significant given TikTok's unique characteristics—its short, engaging video format and

potential for educational content—which may influence study habits differently

compared to other platforms. As a result, this study aims to fill this research gap by

systematically investigating the relationship between TikTok usage and students' study

habits. The goal is to gain a deeper understanding of how TikTok specific content and

user engagement influence study habits, which could lead to targeted interventions to

enhance and improve students' study habits.

Related Studies

The following related studies were reviewed by the researcher which are related

to TikTok and Study Habits of Grade 12 students in Pajo Senior High School.
Philia et al. (n.d) study found that there is no significant relationship between the level

of social media addiction to the level of study habits of senior high students.

The study of Philia is related to the present study in the sense that it tackled the

level of social media addiction in terms of technology pros, usage duration, heavy users,

and social pressures; to identify the level of study habits of senior high students in terms

of time management, study environment, task taking, note taking skills, reading skills,

and writing skills; to determine if there is a significant relationship between social

media addiction and study habits of senior high students. Furthermore, student often

manage

their time despite their exposure to social media which means that they have healthy

study habits. This implies that social media addiction has nothing to do with the study

habits of senior high school students.

Caratiquit and Caratiquit's (2023) study, found that there is a positive and

significant relationship between social media addiction and academic procrastination.

The study participants were Filipino students at a secondary school in Cagayan,

Philippines.

The study of Caratiquit and Caratiquit was considered similar to the study at

hand in the sense that both studies delved into social media exposure that can lead to

procrastination. However, they differed in the scope of the study. While the former study

focused more on social media addiction and academic achievement, the present study

was more on social media exposure and the study habits of students.
Jafari's (2019) study, found that there has only been a moderate positive

correlation between the status of the study habits of medical students on their academic

performance in of moderate level. Thus it has been recommended that a comprehensive

study assesses the relationship between the two presented variables in their study,

namely, students' study habits and academic performance.

The previous study was relevant to the present study considering that both

studies delved into study habits and academic performance. However, the time frame of

the study served as their point of difference. The former study focused more on study

habits amidst blended learning, and the present study focuses on the study habits of

students during face-to-face learning.

1. What is the profile of students in Pajo SHS according to their gender?

2. What is the extent of respondent’s engagements in TikTok in terms of:

2.1 content-type; and

2.2 duration of exposure?

3. What is the level of study habits of Grade 12 students in Senior High School in

terms of:

3.1 scheduling;

3.2 method of study and learning techniques;

3.3 accomplishing assignments; and

3.4 note taking?

4. Is there a significant relationship between the duration of exposure to TikTok

and Grade 12 students' study habits?

5. Based on the results, what possible recommendation can be proposed?

12

Hypotheses of the Study

Null Hypothesis: There is no significant relationship between TikTok and study habits of

Grade 12 students in Pajo Senior High School

Alternative Hypothesis: There is a significant relationship between the duration of

exposure to TikTok and the study habits of Grade 12 students in Pajo National High

School.
13

Significance of the Study

The findings of this study would benefit the following individuals:

teachers will be given information that will help them to be guided and directed to

assess the student's study habits to produce successful adults in the future and to have a

deeper understanding about how student’s duration of exposure on TikTok influence

their study habits;

students will serve as their inspiration to enhance and upgrade their study techniques

and help them to be informed that will learn on how social media influence their study

habits;

parents will serve as their inspiration to have proper guidance and aware to their

children’s behavior for using social media. This will lead the parents to pay more
attention to their children and provide encouragement so that their children will

improve and do well in school, and

future researchers this may serve as their future reference for their review of related

literature and will be encouraged to carry out comparable experiments and assess its

effectiveness.

14
Scope and Delimitation of the Study

This study will focus on and delimit the influence of TikTok on the study habits of

Grade 12 students. The primary subjects of this research will focus on Grade 12

students enrolled during the academic year 2023-2024. The respondents will be limited

to thirty-one (31) Grade 12 students who are in the Senior High School of Pajo National

High School.

The researchers considered working on this study to determine the influence of

TikTok on the study habits of Grade 12 students of Pajo Senior High School. This study

employed a correlational research design, the respondents were given a research

questionnaire, a survey regarding their duration of exposure to Tiktok, and a reference

regarding their study habits. In this research, the researchers adapted a questionnaire
by Verginia Sijo about the influence of TikTok and study habits that utilized a 1-5 Likert-

Scale instrument.

15

Definition of Terms

16

CHAPTER II
Research Methodology

This chapter presents a discussion of the research methodology of the study. This

chapter provides a comprehensive discussion of the study research design, research

environment, research respondents, sampling technique, research instrument, data

gathering procedures, and statistical treatment that will be used for data analysis and

interpretation.

Research Design

This is quantitative in nature because the research questions sought to answer

lead to numerical data. Specifically, this study is correlational since it aims to investigate
the association between social media, specifically, the duration of exposure on TikTok

and the study habits of Grade 12 students. This design is suitable for investigating the

association between variables without establishing a cause-and-effect relationship.

Devi et al. (2022) stated that correlation design is a study designed to examine the

relationship between or among two or more variables in a single group, which can occur

several times. Correlational research design investigates relationships between

variables without the researcher controlling or manipulating any of them.

Research Environment

This research is executed in the Pajo National High School Senior High School

Department. The school is located on Sangi New Road in Pajo, Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu.

This institution runs under the administration of the Department of Education in the

Division of Lapu-Lapu City.

The school is divided into three departments namely, Senior High School

Department, Junior High School Department, and Night High School Department, with

Mr. Marlo Imbong currently serving as the School Head of the Senior High School

Department. The Senior High School Department offers academic tracks and strands,

including General Academic Strand (GAS) comprises of 93 students, Humanities and

Social Sciences (HUMSS) with 57 students, Accountancy and Business Management

(ABM) comprises of 20 students, as well as Technical Vocation Tracks such as Garments

with 27 students, Cookery with 28 students, House Keeping with 42 students, and

Computer System Services (CSS) comprises of 41 students with the total of 308 students

at Pajo Senior High School.

18
Figure 2. Location map of Lapu- Lapu City

19

Research Respondents

The research respondents in this study were the selected students from Grade 12

ABM, GAS, Housekeeping, Garments, TVL, CSS, and Cookery students of Pajo National

High School in the Senior High School Department. This study had 30 respondents from

Grade 12 students.

The sampling technique that will be employed in this study is purposive sampling to

select specific participants who can provide valuable insights related to the research

objectives. The 30 students sampled in each section only have thirty (30) respondents,

following the acceptable size for Correlational Research to have 30 subjects of

respondents according to (Gay, 1976).

Research Data Gathering Procedure

In this study, the researcher formally wrote a letter to the class adviser of each

Grade 12 section and to the respondents, for their consent to conduct the study. Once

the request had been granted, the researchers proceeded to conduct the survey. The

researcher proceeded to the respective classroom where a survey was conducted and

questionnaires were distributed to students. Participants were randomly selected. As

the results were gathered, the researchers wrote a summary, separated the data, drew

conclusions, and suggested recommendations.

Research Instrument

The researcher used researcher made questionnaire in first part of questions and

adapted-modified survey questionnaire in the second part of questions as the main

instrument in data collection.

20

Participants will answer the survey, researcher made and adapted-modified

questionnaire from Verginia G. Sijo’s thesis (March 1999), addressing four key areas

related to self-learning habits: scheduling, study methods, completion of assignments,

and note-taking. The Likert scale, with options ranging from always (5) to never (1), was

employed for responses. Alongside, respondents will provide their profile including

optional name and gender.

Statistical Treatment of Data

To interpret the data effectively, the researcher will employ the following

statistical treatment. The percentage and weighted mean are the tools used to interpret

data.
Simple Percentage

The demographic profile variables and extent of engagement of the respondents

on TikTok were analyzed using simple percentages of the following formulas:

Fx
P= x 100
N

P is the percentage

F is the frequency

N is the total number of respondents

100 is a constant multiplier

21

Average Weighted Mean

The statistical tool was used to compute the weight of the response in the

questionnaire assigned by the respondents during the actual data-gathering procedure.

The formula for the weighted mean is as follows:

Fx
X=
N

X is the weighted mean

F is the frequency

X is the weight of each item

N is the number of respondents

Pearson Product Moment Coefficient of Correlation was employed to determine

whether there was any statistically significant relationship between the two variables.

Where: n = number of pairs scores

xy = sum of the products of paired scores

x = sum of x scores

y = sum of y scores

x²= sum of squared x scores

y²= sum of squared y scores

22

from Pajo Senior High School spend on TikTok. The data was charted, providing insights

into their TikTok usage patterns. Based on the data collected, the majority of

respondents

24

spend 60 minutes on TikTok, with 37% of respondents falling into this category.

Following this, 23% spend 30 minutes, while 17% spend 120 minutes, and 13% spend

180 minutes. A smaller percentage, 7%, spends 40 minutes, and even fewer, 3%, spend

240 minutes on TikTok. This distribution suggests that a considerable number of

students are spending significant amounts of time on TikTok.

Level of Study Habits of Respondents

Table 4 presents the level of study habits of the respondents based on their

answers to the survey questionnaires.

3.41-4.20 - Very Satisfactory 1.00-1.80 - Unsatisfactory
2.61-3.40 – Satisfactory

25

Based on the results of Table 4, the level of Study Habits practiced by the Grade

12 students manifested and exhibited Satisfactory level of Study Habits in terms of

Scheduling (2.872), Method of Study and Learning Techniques (3.206), Accomplishing

Assignments (3.144) and Note Taking (3.226). This means that the respondents

employed scheduling, and time management, in looking for learning techniques and

note-taking efficiently. This may imply that there is an equal exhibition of habits and

there might be no other activities interfered with.

The results affirmed the study of Tus (2020) that study habits are at the core of a

learner's academic success. It is an action like reading, taking notes, conducting study
groups that students perform frequently, and regularly accomplishing the learning goals.

Most significantly the data findings bolstered the study by Jafari, Aghaei & Khatony

(2019), who stated that most successful students today attribute their achievements

largely to the adoption and practice of efficient study habits. Study habits have been the

most reliable indicator of academic performance and are particularly vital to students'

academic success.

26
For table 5 the computed r value for social media and study habits is

0.107226294 and their computed p-value is 0.572769557. It shows the result in the

duration of exposure on TikTok of Grade 12 students in Pajo Senior High School and

their study habits when respondents' data are grouped based on both variables. Since

the p-value is less than our chosen alpha of 0.05, we failed to reject the null hypothesis.

Thus, there is no

sufficient evidence to say that there is a significant relationship between social media

and study habits.

This means that students who less or mostly spent their time watching TikTok

may have great or poor study habits. Furthermore, duration of exposure on TikTok, is

not determinant factor in student’s study habits. This may imply that other factors may

influence their study habits, such as time management skills, learning styles and

preferences and motivation that may affect their life as student.

27

CHAPTER IV

SUMMARY, FINDINGS, CONCLUSIONS & RECOMMENDATIONS

This chapter presents the summary, conclusions and recommendations based on

the findings of the study. This study was undertaken to identify the factors influencing

the sleep quality of selected grade 12 students in Pajo National High School.

SUMMARY
This study generally aims to determine the influence of Tiktok on the study

habits of Grade 12 students in Pajo National High School during the school year 2023-

2024. Specifically, this study sought to answer the extent of respondent’s engagements

in TikTok in terms of content type and duration of exposure and the level of study habits

of Grade 12 students in Senior High School in terms of scheduling, method of study and

learning techniques, accomplishing assignments, and note taking. Additionally, this

sought to determine the significant relationship of TikTok and Grade 12 students study

habits.

FINDINGS

The following findings were obtained through a thorough investigation and

statistical analysis of all collected data.

1. The findings show the demographic profile of the respondents with regard to

their gender of Grade 12 students in Pajo National High School, it can be

highlighted that there were 18 or 58% of male respondents. On the other hand,

there were 13 or 42% female respondents who answered the survey.

2. The findings showed in the level of Self-Learning Habits practiced by the Grade

12 students manifested and exhibited Satisfactory level in terms of Scheduling,

Method of Study and Learning Techniques, Accomplishing Assignments and Note

Taking.

3. The findings showed in the duration of exposure on TikTok that majority of

respondents spend 60 minutes on TikTok, with 37% of respondents falling into

this category and a smaller percentage, 7%, spends 40 minutes, and even fewer,
3%, spend 240 minutes on TikTok. This distribution suggests that a considerable

number of students are spending significant amounts of time on TikTok.

4. The findings suggest that there is no significant relationship between TikTok and

students study habits. The statistical analysis conclusively demonstrates that the

selected Grade 12 students at Pajo Senior High School do not exhibit a significant

correlation between their level of duration of exposure on TikTok and their study

habits.

Conclusion

Based on the study findings, on the study shows that the Grade 12 students in

Pajo Senior High School generally have satisfactory study habits, which include their

scheduling, study methods, accomplishing assignments, and taking notes. Importantly

the research found that the amount of time these students spend on TikTok does not

significantly influence their study habits. This suggests that a student's exposure on

TikTok does not necessarily correlate with their study habits. Thus, it can be concluded

that TikTok alone is not a determining factor in a student's study habits. It is to conduct

more in-depth studies to explore other factors that may influence students' study habits.

29

This may involve looking into other factors like time management skills, study

environment, and sleep quality.

RECOMMENDATIONS

Based on the conclusion drawn from the research finding the recommendations

that we deemed to be actionable are the following:

1. While the overall level of study habits among students is satisfactory, educators

can continue to reinforce good study skills in the classroom. In order to meet the

different learning styles and improve their study habits, to have a progress by

encouraging students to manage their time effectively and providing them with

information about digital literacy.

2. Even though TikTok had no significant relationship on student’s study habits, it's

important for students to balance their time on social media with academic

responsibilities to ensure they remain focused on their studies. Encourage them

to explore various study techniques, seek assistance when needed, and maintain

consistency in their study routines.

3. In order to provide a healthy study habits for students, parents should support

their children by understanding their study habits and encouraging a balanced

approach to using social media, like TikTok. Since TikTok usage does not

negatively influence on study habits, there's no need for strict restrictions on its

use. However, parents should still keep an eye on the overall screen time to

ensure it remains healthy and doesn’t interfere with their study habits.
