Tectonic Plate Boundary

According to the Plate Tectonic Theory, the Earth’s lithosphere consists of the crust and upper
mantle that move slowly and constantly over time. This movement causes the formation of plate
boundaries
Plate boundaries are the lines at the edges of the different pieces of the lithosphere.

3 types of Plate Boundaries

1. CONVERGENT PLATE BOUNDARY.-Where in plates are moving toward each other.
Example: . Examples are boundaries
between the Eurasian plate and the Philippine
plate, Nazca Plate and South American Plate,
and Pacific Plate and Australian Plate.

2. DIVERGENT PLATE BOUNDARY-

occurs when two tectonic plates move away from each other.
Example; Examples are boundaries
between South American plate and African
plate, Pacific Plate and Nazca Plate, and
North American and Eurasian Plate

3. TRANSFORM FAULT BOUNDARY- is formed when two plates are sliding past each
other. It is also called the Strike-slip fault. Lithosphere is neither created nor destroyed.

Example: San Andrea Fault in California,

Alpine fault, and North Anatolian fault.
3 types Convergent Plate Boundary
a. Oceanic – Continental Convergent Boundary
b. Oceanic- Oceanic Convergent boundary
c. Continental- Continental Convergent Boundary

A. OCEANIC- CONTINENTAL
When oceanic plate collides with a
continental plate it sinks beneath the
continent and reach the mantle. This process
is called SUBDUCTION. The oceanic plate is
denser, so it undergoes subduction forming a
deep ocean TRENCH.. The leading edge of
the subducted plate melts in the mantle and
magma rises forming a CONTINENTAL ,
VOLCANIC ARC. Continues grinding of
plate will cause an EARTHQUAKE to occur.
