Foreword

T HIS standard on Woodruff Keysand Keyseats is a revision ofUSA

Standard Woodruff Keys,KeyslotsandCutters, USAS B17f-1930,
which standard was developed by subcbmmittee No. 5 ofUSA Standards
Committee B17 on Shafting.
Thesubcommittee’sinitial work wasstarted in 1925 and after nu-
merous drafts and revisions was accepted by industry and designated by
ASA (later changed to USASI) a s an AmericanStandard on December 31,
1930.
The B17f-1930 standard was reaffirmed in 1955 but it wasrecognized
that the standard w a s not in conformity with current practice.
In 1962 the USA Standards Committee B17 was reactivated and a s u b
committeedevelopedand established this updated standard on Woodruff
Keys and Keyseats which i s in part a revision of B17f- 1930.
Followingapproval by the USA Standards Committee B17 and the
sponsor, the proposed revision was approved on September 18, 1967 by the
USA Standards Institute, and redesignated B17.2-1967.

Woodruff Keys and Keyseats

1. Scope
This
standard covers
nomenclature, defini-
nitions,
identification number, dimensions and
tolerances of Woodruff K e y s and Keyseats.
It represents manufacturing practices for sizes
and types from yu in. X in. thru in. X 3% in.
covering 66 listings.
Material, heat treatment, hardness or finish is
not within the scope of this standard.
Dimensional features only are included.

2. Definitions
Woodruff K e y . A demountable machinery part
which, when assembled into keyseats, provides a
positivemeansfor transmitting torque between
the shaft and hub.
Woodruff K e y Number. An identification
number by which the size of key may be readily
determined ( s e e footnote to Table 1).
-
Woodruff K e y s e a t Sbajt. The circular pocket
in which the key i s retained.
Woodruff K e y s e a t - Hub. Ah axiallylocated
rectangular groove in a hub. (Has been referred
to a s a keyway.)
Woodruff K e y s e a t Milling Cutter. An arbor type
or shank type millingcutter normally used for
milling Woodruff keyseats in shafts. (See USA
Standard B5.3-1960 Milling Cutters for sizes and

Table 3 Width A values were s e t with the maximum keyseat (shaft) width a s thar figure which will receive a key with the
greatest amount of looseness consistent with assuring the key's sticking in the keyseat (shafr). Minimum keysear width i s
that figure permitting the largesr shaft distortion acceptable when assembling maximum key in minimum keysear.
Dimensions A. B, C, D are taken at side intersection.
