An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Clinical Fellow in General Surgery based at
University Hospital Monklands
Whilst the post is not recognized for training there will be ample opportunity to gain experience
and develop skills including endoscopy. There is access to a state of the art simulation facility at
Kirklands Hospital that is available to all staff.
The successful candidate should have completed foundation years. Previous experience of
General Surgery at a registrar grade senior to ST3 equivalent is essential.
The job is offered as a full-time post (40 hours plus out of hours) but applications will also be
considered from those wishing to work less than full-time.
The successful candidate will take part in the senior registrar on call rota (full shift new deal
compliant) depending on experience.
The Board has a well-established, bespoke Medical Education and Training Centre with
simulation facilities and is developing a faculty for Human Factors training. We have a strong
commitment to Patient Safety and Quality Improvement with an increasing number of consultants
who are trained Patient Safety Fellows.
UH Monklands (UHM) is a busy District General Surgical Unit with excellent links with other
departments. The department has a predominant colorectal interest with a number of colleagues
with broader General Surgical skills. The department maintains close links with an active and
dynamic department of gastroenterology jointly managing complex IBD. The department
undertakes major colorectal cancer resections and participates in the robotic surgery training
programme in UHH. The department is well supported by allied specialties including a recently
built modern critical care unit and theatre suite. On-site support exists from the general medical
specialties and UHM if the Lanarkshire base for inpatient urology, Infectious diseases and renal
dialysis.
All 3 NHS Lanarkshire sites join for weekly Lanarkshire wide Upper and Lower GI Cancer Multi-
Disciplinary Team meetings and recently a complex polyp MDT has been set up with wide input
from the multidisciplinary team. IBD MDTs take place fortnightly in UHM in addition to a monthly
NHSL complex IBD MDT and educational IBD academy.
Service development, audit and research
Currently NHS Lanarkshire and University Hospital Monklands are continuing with the
development of a modern, progressive surgical service. The development of Robotically assisted
surgery is currently underway in several specialties across Lanarkshire and it is anticipated that
this programme will continue to develop over coming years. In addition, NHS Lanarkshire is
currently progressing with the planning and building of a new digital University Hospital
Monklands to provide a state of the art replacement for the current facilities. This presents an
exciting opportunity for the successful applicant to help to shape the development of surgical
services and processes and to participate in the design and function of a new hospital.
NHS Lanarkshire is supportive of applications from individuals with well-developed ideas for
improving services who are able to demonstrate a commitment to quality improvement, patient
safety (including human factors training), Medical Education and Research & Development. We
have an active audit department and have regularly presented our audit and research at local,
national and international meetings.
Education and Training

The department of surgery has developed an excellent reputation for surgical undergraduate
training over recent years lead by one of the colorectal consultants holding the post of associate
professor for medical education. The Board has a well-established, bespoke Medical Education
and Training Centre with simulation facilities and is developing a faculty for Human Factors
training. These facilities provide both local, regional and national training events. Additionally,
UHM hosts its own dedicated area for simulation training. We have a strong commitment to

Rota
NHS Lanarkshire is constantly reviewing its rotas to maintain New Deal compliance together with
the new arrangements as set down by the Scottish Government and Scottish Medical Training
(SMT). Rotas therefore, may be subject to change.
For candidates who have trained out with the UK, joining the out of hours rota will be following a
successful completion of the extended Soft Landing induction. (The Soft Landing induction is a
period of shadowing and integration for those at the start of their post so that they have efficient
time to acclimitise to the working environment NHS.

HOURS OF WORK Full Time – 40 hours per week plus out of hours
SUPERANNUATION New entrants to NHS Lanarkshire who are aged sixteen but
under seventy five will be enrolled automatically into membership
of the NHS Pension Scheme. Should you choose to "opt out"

Vulnerable Groups Scheme (PVG) Membership.
MEDICAL NEGLIGENCE In terms of NHS Circular 1989 (PCS) 32 dealing with Medical
Negligence the Health Board does not require you to subscribe to
a Medical Defence Organisation. Health Board indemnity will
cover only Health Board responsibilities. It may, however, be in
your interest to subscribe to a defence organisation in order to
ensure you are covered for any work, which does not fall within
the scope of the indemnity scheme.
PRINCIPAL BASE OF You may be required to work at any of NHS Lanarkshire sites as
WORK part of your role. Your base will be clarified for expenses
purposes.
