DEVICE NAME :

EMERGENCY ESCAPE BREATHING APPARATUS (EEBD)

DEVICE FUNCTION :
An Emergency Escape Breathing Device (EEBD) is life saving appliance which is DEVICE PHOTO :
used for escaping an area with hazardous conditions such as fire, smoke,
poisonous gases etc. As the name mentions, it is used for quick escape from a
situation wherein the individual has to swiftly vacate his immediate
surroundings, i.e., it is a self-contained compressed air apparatus for escape
from a contaminated environment. The accommodation area mandates the
carriage of at least two EEBDs whereas the engine room carriage depends on
the layout along with the number of personnel in the space, both complying
with amendments of chapter -3 of Fire system safety code (FSSC). It is
important to understand the construction and working of EEBD before buying
one.
As with most other breathing apparatus onboard, the EEBD has an audible
alarm that indicates the depletion of available air at around 10 minutes of
usage time, giving the wearer time to evacuate his hazardous surroundings. It is
important to note that the EEBD is NOT a fire fighting equipment and is in place
ONLY to assist the individual in vacating his immediate surroundings. It should
never be, under any circumstances, be used to fight fire or evacuate casualties.

HOW TO TEST / MAINTENANCE THE DEVICE :

1. Check the indicator needle is in the green zone thus ensuring that no
leak has taken place. This should be done monthly
2. Keep the device case clean. This is also to be done monthly
3. Check and record expiry dates. An EEBD is typically valid for about 15
years
4. Do not open an EEBD in a designated area. Use the training piece for
the purposes of training

DEVICE NAME :

EMERGENCY LADDER

DEVICE FUNCTION : DEVICE PHOTO :

During emergency situations, the crew uses embarkation ladders. The crew
then climbs down the ladder into a liferaft or rescue boat. Embarkation ladders
need to be on every ship for a possible emergency. This ladder is extending
from the deck to the waterline.

HOW TO USE / MAINTENANCE THE DEVICE :

It is very important to continuously monitor and perform regular planned
maintenance on the accommodation ladder.

1. The general maintenance, which needs to be performed are:

2. General inspection of ladder, platforms, lashing, wire and permanent
fixtures
3. All greasing points must be greased regularly with seawater resistant
grease which will include:
4. Various hoisting sheaves on the ladder
5. Hoisting sheaves on davit arm
6. Hoisting sheaves on steel structure
7. Wire ropes
8. Monthly inspection of wire which will be recorded in the log book
9. Renewal of wire due to deterioration of the falls or at intervals of not
more than five years, whichever is earlier

IMMERSION SUIT
DEVICE FUNCTION : DEVICE PHOTO :
Immersion suit is a body covering suit worn specifically for flotation and survival
during emergencies on high seas. This suit is, therefore, also known as a
survival or rescue suit, used during commercial operations. In today’s times, an
immersion suit is one of the necessities on ships and oil rigs, considering the
protection needed from cold water, rough seas and dangerous situations.
Hence, all sailors, commercial fishermen, and crew members onboard cargo
vessels maintain their immersion suits, which offer better visibility and prevent
them from drowning. It also provides hypothermia protection and saves from
extremities as it is made of waterproof material. Some suits have harnesses and
offer ankle adjustments or a better fit.

HOW TO TEST / MAINTENANCE THE DEVICE :

Maintenance of immersion suits is a must. Regular inspections should be done,
and suits must be checked thoroughly for any holes, tears etc. Their inflatable
hoses, zipper, straps, mitts and face shield should also be checked. If they had
been in salt water, they should have been rinsed with fresh water and left to
dry, but not in direct sunlight.

A rescue suit is designed mainly in two colours – red and orange. Both the
colours are kept bright (fluorescent) so that the suits can immediately attract
the attention of paramedics or rescue aid.

MAN OVERBOARD (MOB)

DEVICE FUNCTION : DEVICE PHOTO :

Man overboard marker is a device fitted on the outboard side of ship's
bridgewing attached to a lifebuoy. If any crew member or passenger falls
overboard personal on board will quickly release the MOB marker which will
fall into sea and float emitting orange smoke and flashing lights.
Please read these instructions carefully before handling
the MOB. Note that MOB Smoke has no electric lights, but all
mountings and operating procedures are the same as for
MOB Light and Smoke.

METHODE OF OPERATION :
1. The MOB operates automatically when the life buoy is
2. released and has separate ignition systems for light
and smoke.
3. The lights are operated by an integral power source.
4. The MOB emits light and smoke automatically when it
5. leaves the bracket. After release, smoke is emitted for
6. at least 15 minutes and the two electric lights on MOB
7. Light & Smoke operate for a minimum of 2 hours at
8. 2 candela.

PYROTECHNIC
DEVICE FUNCTION : DEVICE PHOTO :
Pyrotechnics is the science of using materials capable of undergoing self-
contained and self-sustained exothermic chemical reactions for the production
of heat, light, gas, smoke and/or sound.

Used under extreme emergency situations (such as distress), these are

provided onboard ships to grab the attention/inform ships within range so as to
seek help and assistance of the vessels for rescue. Basically, it is a visual method
of sending SOS signals. These pyrotechnics are used in time of distress is
mentioned in Annex 4 of COLREGs.

DEVICE NAME :

SEARCH AND RESCUE RADAR TRANSPONDER (SART)

DEVICE FUNCTION : DEVICE PHOTO :
The radar-SART is used to locate a survival craft or distressed vessel by creating
a series of dots on a rescuing ship's radar display. A SART will only respond to a
9 GHz X-band (3 cm wavelength) radar. It will not be seen on S-band (10
cm) or other radar.

A Search and Rescue Transponder (SART) is an electronic device that

automatically reacts to the emission of a radar. This enhances the visibilty on a
radar screen. SART transponders are used to ease the search of a ship in
distress or a liferaft. All GMDSS vessels up to 500 ton must carry
at least one SART.

HOW TO TEST / MAINTENANCE THE DEVICE :

General Test :
1. Switch SART to test mode
2. Hold SART in view of the radar antenna
3. Check that visual indicator light operates
4. Check that audible beeper operates
5. Observe radar display and see if there are concentric circles on the PPI
6. Check the battery expiry date

Typical Test :
1. Remove SART from the bracket
2. Insert the probe into the SART at 2 seconds interval; the lamp flashes
and the beeper sounds
3. Observe concentric circles on the X band radar

between survival craft and rescue vessels. It may also be used for onboard
communications on channels 15 and 17. Newer models automatically reduce
the power to 1 W when these channels are selected.

METHODE OF OPERATION :
18. Check and test condition of portable radio apparatus for each lifeboat
(if any)
19. Check the battery and make sure battery full
