Procedure Activity:
1. Form group of three.
2. Your teacher read various passages from various texts. After each
passage is read, you have to determine whether it came from a
formal publication or from a fictional story.
3. The group that guesses the most number of passages correctly
wins.
Lesson Proper:

Nature and characteristics of an academic texts.


1. Structure
Academic texts are typically formal. They have clearly
structured introduction, body, and conclusion. They also
include information from credible sources which are, in turn,
properly cited. They also include a list of references used in
developing the academic paper.
2. Tone refers to attitude conveyed in a piece of writing.
Arguments of others are fairly presented and with an
appropriate narrative tone. And no loaded or biased language.
3. Language- it uses an ambiguous language. Uses clear topic
sentences and should use formal language and third person
point of view.
4. Citation – cite sources in the body of the paper and provides
list of reference as either footnotes or endnotes
5. Complexity – address complex issues that require higher-
order thinking skills to comprehend.
6. Evidenced-based arguments – opinions are based on sound
understanding of the pertinent body of knowledge
