3. Two rectangular apertures of dimensions 2a x 2b are separated by ∆ along the x direction and
Ω along the y direction as shown in the figure. Find the amplitude and intensity distribution of
the Fraunhofer diffraction pattern of this aperture. Assume unit amplitude and normally
incident plane wave illumination.
4.
5. In a single slit Fraunhofer diffraction pattern, evaluate the position of maxima and minima.
Calculate the ratio of intensity of the first maximum to the intensity of central maximum.
6. In a single slit Fraunhofer diffraction pattern, find the intensities of the first three secondary
maxima, relative to the intensity of central maximum.
7. In a double slit experiment, the wavelength of the light source is 405 nm, the slit separation is
19.44 µm and the slit width is 4.05 µm.
(a) How many bright fringes are within the central peak of the diffraction envelope?
(b) How many bright fringes are within either of the first side peaks of diffraction envelope?
8. Consider the far field pattern of a double slit. Fifteen bright fringes appear within the central
diffraction peak. If each slit is 0.25 mm wider, by how much are they separated?
9. Find the lateral displacement in the zeroth order bright fringe in the interference pattern formed
by waves emerging from two slits of separation ‘b’, if one of the slits is covered by a plane
parallel plate of thickness ‘t’ and refractive index ‘n’. The separation between the slit plane and
observation plane is ‘z’.
10. Evaluate the position of maxima and minima in a double slit Fraunhofer diffraction pattern.
15. Two circular holes of diameter ‘R’ and separation ‘d’ are illuminated normally by a plane
monochromatic wave of wavelength λ. Find the intensity distribution in the Fraunhofer
diffraction pattern. Qualitatively sketch and discuss the amplitude of the resultant diffraction
pattern.
16. Calculate analytically the Fraunhofer diffraction pattern of the tilted elliptical aperture shown
below, which transmits all the light that is incident on the inside of the tilted ellipse and it is
opaque outside the ellipse. The ellipse major and minor axes are a, b, respectively, and the
major axis is tilted by ψ with respect to the x axis.
Sketch the magnitude of the diffraction pattern that you derived. You can start directly from the
Fourier transform of a circle.
