A proposal seminar is an academic activity in which a student who wants to do research

presents a scientific research plan to the supervising lecturer and potential examiner. The main
goal of a proposal seminar is to get the necessary approval and input before conducting
scientific research. Proposal seminars also provide opportunities for students to sharpen their
research focus and methodology.

Steps of seminar proposal in Indonesian universities:

1. Choosing a Research Topic

Choose a research topic that matches your interests, abilities, and academic needs.
Make sure the topic is relevant and makes a significant contribution to the chosen field
of study.
2. Gathering Information and Literature
Ensure that the topic you choose has easily accessible references. Conduct a literature
review to gather information related to your research topic. Read academic journals,
books, articles, and other scholarly publications to understand the context and theories
related to the topic.
3. Creating a Research Plan
Prepare a research plan that includes the title, background, problem statement, research
objectives, research methodology, scope of the study, and a timeline of research
activities.
4. Consultation with a Supervisor
Discuss the research plan with your academic supervisor to receive constructive
feedback and suggestions. The supervisor will guide and help improve your research
plan to meet academic standards.
5. Writing the Seminar Proposal
Write the seminar proposal following the structure that you’ve planned. Make sure the
proposal complies with the writing guidelines set by your university.
6. Presenting the Seminar Proposal
Present your seminar proposal in front of your supervisor and potential examiners.
Follow the seminar presentation guidelines, including time management and how to
answer questions properly.
7. Discussion and Revision
After the presentation, accept feedback, suggestions, and critiques from your supervisor
and examiners. Revise the proposal based on the feedback received.
8. Submitting the Proposal
Submit the revised and approved research proposal to the relevant authority according
to your university’s procedures.
9. Conducting the Research
Once the proposal is approved, proceed with conducting the research according to the
plan outlined in your proposal. By following these steps, university students in
Indonesia can effectively prepare and present their seminar proposals, allowing them to
begin their research with thorough preparation and proper guidance from their
supervisor to produce high-quality academic work.

In addition to the steps mentioned to prepare for the proposal seminar, it is also
important to take care of administrative tasks. This means registering your seminar with the
university and making sure you submit all the necessary documents, such as the research
proposal and approval letters from your department. Some universities also have a preliminary
review where you present a draft of your proposal to a smaller group (or just your supervisor)
to get feedback before the actual seminar. This helps ensure your proposal meets academic
standards. Finally, understanding research ethics is essential. This means making sure you
follow the correct steps when collecting and using information for your research, such as
properly citing sources and not copying the work of others.
