Lineage The "City of" prefix was added before its 1983 commissioning
to clarify that the ship is meant to honor the city, in response to
Catholic politicians who protested against naming a warship
using Latin words which translate to "Body of Christ.”

March 31, 1984: USS City of Corpus Christi departed NSB New London
Deployment for its maiden Indian Ocean deployment.
Summary
October 19, 1984: The City of Corpus Christi returned to homeport after a
nearly seven-month deployment, circumnavigating the globe around the
Cape of Good Hope and transiting the Panama Canal on October 14, 1984.

October 1985 - December 1985: North Atlantic

November 1985- November 1985: Blue Nose - Arctic Circle

December 21, 1985: SSN 705 returned to Groton, Conn., after a two-
month underway in the North Atlantic.

March 1986 - July 1986: Mediterranean

July 25, 1986: USS City of Corpus Christi returned to Naval Submarine
Base New London after a three-month surge deployment to the
Mediterranean Sea. Port calls to La Maddalena, Italy; and Toulon, France.

November 1986 - August 1988: CNO OPS ADCAP

January 5, 1987: USS City of Corpus Christi departed Port Canaveral, Fla.,
after onloading MK 48 ADCAP exercise torpedoes for test firings at
AUTEC range.

Port visit to Port Everglades, Fl., from January 15-16, 1987;

Inport Port Canaveral again from January 17-19, 1987;

Returned home on January 27, 1987;

Underway for sea trials from February 25-27, 1987;

February 2, 2003: SSN 705 arrived in Naval Station Pearl Harbor for
Primary Relief valve testing and training. Underway for Basic Submarine
Assessment (BSA) and Mine Radiness Certification inspection from March
10-15, 2003;

Returned to homeport on March 23, 2003;

Underway to avoid the Typhoon Kujira from April 13-16, 2003;

Underway in support of exercise Tundem Thrust from April 21- May 5,


2003;

Underway for sea trials from May 19-21, 2003.

May 28, 2003: USS City of Corpus Christi departed Guam for Tactical
Readiness Evaluation (TRE) in the Hawaiian Op. Area.

Inport Pearl Harbor from June 4-7 and 13-18, 2003;

Returned home on June 25, 2003; Underway for sea trials from July 24-25,
2003.

From July 28 through September 15, 2003, the City of Corpus Christi was
underway for a southern Pacific deployment in support of tactical
development exercise Lungfish.

July 2006: Shellback Initiation - 18 July 2006 - Pacific Ocean

October 24, 2009: USS City of Corpus Christi arrived in Laem Chabang,
Thailand, for a scheduled port visit.

April 14, 2011: The City of Corpus Christi arrived in Brisbane, Australia,
for a six-day port visit.

November 4, 2013: USS City of Corpus Christi departed Pearl Harbor for a
scheduled western Pacific deployment.

September 12, 2015: USS City of Corpus Christi departed homeport for its
final western Pacific deployment.

February 12, 2016: USS City of Corpus Christi moored at Sierra 10 Wharf
on Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam following a five-month deployment.

May 30, 2016: USS City of Corpus Christi held a decommissioning


ceremony at Wharf S1B after more than 33 years of active service.

After commissioning, and for each consecutive year up to 1989, USS City
Awards of Corpus Christi was awarded the Commander Submarine Squadron Two
Battle Efficiency and Engineering Excellence “E” awards.

USS City of Corpus Christi received the Meritorious Unit Commendation


for operations in 1985 and the Navy Unit Commendation for operations in
1986.

USS City of Corpus Christi was selected as the recipient of the


Commander, Submarine Squadron TWO Battle Efficiency “E” for 1994.

Following another highly successful Western Atlantic Deployment in 1995,


USS City of Corpus Christi was awarded the Commander, Submarine
Squadron TWO Tactical “T” for excellence in submarine tactics.

USS City of Corpus Christi was awarded the 1997 Commander, Submarine
Squadron FOUR Communications “C” and Medical “M” for excellence in
each respective field.

USS City of Corpus Christi was awarded the 1999 Commander, Submarine
Squadron FOUR Tactical “T” and Silver “S” for Esprit de Corps.

USS City of Corpus Christi was awarded the Battle Efficiency “E” for
2003 through 2005 and 2009, and the Meritorious Unit Commendation in
2011 for outstanding performance while forward deployed.

Meritorious Unit Commendation (MUC) in a pierside ceremony on Naval


Base Guam April 4, 2013.
During the naval Exercise Malabar, between the navies of India, the United
Noteworthy States and Japan, in a simulated battle, the Indian Navy's INS Sindhudhvaj
Events reportedly scored a kill against City of Corpus Christi. Sindhudhvaj is a
Soviet-built Kilo class, but upgraded with the Indian USHUS sonar.
