Arithmetic Progression

Q1. Three numbers are in arithmetic progression. Their sum is 9 and

𝟏
their product is 𝟐𝟎 𝟒. Determine the three numbers.

Solution :

Q2. Find the number of terms of the series 5, 8, 11,… of which the sum
is 1025.

Solution :
Q3. An oil company bores a hole 80 m deep. Estimate the cost of boring
if the cost is P30 for drilling the first metre with an increase in cost of
P2 per metre for each succeeding metre.

Solution :

The series is: 30, 32, 34, … to 80 terms, i.e. a = 30, d = 2 and n = 80.

𝐧
Thus, total cost , Sn = [𝟐𝐚 + (𝐧 − 𝟏)𝐝]
𝟐

𝟖𝟎
= [𝟐𝐱𝟑𝟎 + (𝟖𝟎 − 𝟏)𝟐]
𝟐

= 40x[60+79x2) = 40x[60+158]

= 40x218 = P8720

Q4. The first, tenth and last terms of an arithmetic progression are 9,
40.5 and 425.5 respectively. Find (a) the number of terms, (b) the 70th
term and (c) the sum of all the terms.

Solution :

(b) The 70th term is: a + (n – 1)d = 9 + (70 – 1)(3.5) = 9 + 69(3.5) = 250.5
𝐧 𝟏𝟐𝟎
(c) Sum of all the terms. Sn = [𝟐𝐚 + (𝐧 − 𝟏)𝐝] = [𝟐𝐱𝟗 + (𝟏𝟐𝟎 − 𝟏)𝐱𝟑. 𝟓]
𝟐 𝟐

= 60[18+416.5] = 26070.

Q5. Find the sum of all the numbers between 0 and 207 which are
exactly divisible by 3.

Solution :

The series 3, 6, 9, 12, . . . , 207 is an AP whose first term a=3 and

common difference d =3.

The last term is a + (n − 1)d = 207; i.e. 3 + (n − 1)3 = 207,

from which (n − 1) = (207 – 3)/3 = 68

Hence n = 68 + 1 = 69

The sum of all 69 terms is given by

Q6. The seventh term of a series is 29 and the eleventh term is 54.
Determine the sixteenth term.

Solution :

The n’th term of an arithmetic progression is: a + (n – 1)d

The 7th term is: a + 6d = 29. . . . . . . (1)

The 11th term is: a + 10d = 54. . . . . . . . (2)

(2) – (1) gives: 4d = 25 from which, d = 25/4

Substituting in (1) gives: a + 6( 25/4) = 29

i.e. a + 37.5 = 29 from which, a = 29 – 37.5 = - 8.5

Hence, the 16th term is: -8.5 + (16 – 1)x( 25/4) = - 8.5 + 93.75 = 85.25
Geometric Progression

Q1. If the population of Great Britain is 55 million and is decreasing at

2.4% per annum, what will be the population in 5 years time?

Solution :

G.B. population now = 55 million, population after 1 year = 0.976 × 55

million,

population after 2 years = (0.976)2 × 55 million

Hence, population after 5 years = (0.976)5 × 55 = 48.71 million

Q2. A drilling machine is to have 8 speeds ranging from 100 rev/min to

1000 rev/min. If the speeds form a geometric progression determine
their values, each correct to the nearest whole number.

Solution :
𝟏 𝟏 𝟓
Q3. Find the sum to infinity of the series 𝟐 , −𝟏 , ,. . . . .
𝟐 𝟒 𝟖

Solution :

The series is a G.P. where r = - (1.25/2.5) = -0.5 and a = 2.5.

𝐚 𝟐.𝟓 𝟐.𝟓 𝟓 𝟐
Hence, sum to infinity, 𝐒∞ = = = = = 𝟏
(𝟏−𝐫) [𝟏−(−𝟎.𝟓)] 𝟏.𝟓 𝟑 𝟑

Q4. A hire tool firm finds that their net return from hiring tools is
decreasing by 10% per annum. If their net gain on a certain tool this
year is £400, find the possible total of all future profits from this tool
(assuming the tool lasts for ever).

Solution :

Q5. If £100 is invested at compound interest of8%per annum,

determine (a) the value after 10 years, (b) the time, correct to the
nearest year, it takes to reach more than £300.
Solution :

Q6. Find the sum of the first 7 terms of the series 2, 5, 12 ,… (correct
2
to 4 significant figures).

Solution :

= 812.5 correct to 4 significant figures.
