(1)Preeti reached the metro station and found that the escalator was not
working. She walked up the stationary escalator in time t₁. On the other days, if
she remains stationary on the moving escalator, then the escalator takes her up
in time t2. Find the time taken by her to walk on the moving escalator..
(2)Two particles move with initial velocity 4 m/s and 2 m/s and their
accelerations are 1m/s2 and 2 m/s² respectively. If both reach at the finalposition
in the same time, then calculate the length of the path travelled.
(3) A car moves at a velocity 2.24 km/h in first minute, at 3.60 km h/1 in the
second minute and at 5.18 km/h in the third minute. Calculate the average
velocity in these three minutes.
(4)A rocket is fired vertically and ascends with a constant vertical acceleration.
In the duration of 5 s, it attains an upward velocity of 150 m s. After 5 s, its
engine stops functioning and rocket continues to move as a free particle and
finally returns on the earth. From the velocity-time graph of the rocket, calculate
(i) the height reached by the rocket during the period of burning of fuel
(g =10 m/s2); (ii) maximum height reached by the rocket and (iii) the
acceleration of the rocket during the period of fuel burning.
(5) What is the distance in (km) of a quasar from which light takes 3 x 10 years
to reach the earth? The speed of light, c=3x108 m/s.
(6) A train 100 m long is moving with a velocity of 72 km/h. Find the time it
takes to cross the bridge 1 km long.
(7) A police constable is chasing a thief, who is initially 10 m ahead of the
constable. The uniform speeds of the constable and the thief are 10m/s and 8 m/
s respectively. From the plot of position-time graphs for the constable and the
thief, find the time, the constable will take to catch the thief and the distance,
the constable has to run.
(8) A man starts from his home at 8:00 AM to his office. He walks with a speed
of 2 m s-1 on a road up to his office 30 km away from his home. He stays in the
office up to 4:00 PM and returns to his home by bus, which moves with a speed
of 10 m s-1. Calculate (i) the time taken by man to reach his office and
(i) time taken by the man to reach his home. Also, plot (x-1) graph of hismotion.
(9) A car travels along a straight line for first half time with a speed of 40 km/h
and the second half time with a speed of 60 km/h. Find the average speed of
(10).A motor cyclist goes from station A to B at 40 km/h and then returns from
B to A at 120 km/h. Calculate (i) average speed (ii) average velocity during the
round trip.
(11).A car covers the first one third of a distance x at a speed of 10 km/h, the
second one third at a speed of 20 km/h and the last one third at a speed of
60 km/h. Determine the average speed of the car over the entire distance x.
(12) From the top of a tower, a ball is dropped to fall freely under gravity and at
the same time, another ball is thrown up with a velocity of 50 m/s. Plot the
position- time graph for the motion of the two balls during the time interval
t = 0 to t = 5s. Take g = 10 m/s2
(13).Brakes are applied to a car travelling at 30 m/s. Its velocity is reduced to 20
m/s in 5 seconds. Calculate the retardation produced by the brakes. Also
calculate the distance covered in those 5 seconds.
(14). A body starts from rest and acquires a velocity of 12 m/s in 5 s. Calculate
the acceleration and distance moved.
(15). A bus is moving on a straight road with a speed of 126 km/h- is brought to
rest after 200 m. Calculate retardation of the bus.
(16) A car is moving with a velocity of 72 km/h. Its velocity is reduced to 36
km/h after covering a distance of 200 m. Calculate retardation in cm/s2
(17) Starting from rest, an aeroplane takes off after covering 0.7 km on the
runway. If it takes off at 35 m/s, calculate (a) the acceleration (b) time for which
it moves on the runway.
(18)A body moving with a uniform acceleration travels distances of 24 m and
64 m during the first two equal consecutive intervals of time, each of duration 4
s. Determine the initial velocity and acceleration of the moving body.
(19) A body travels a distance of 2 m in 2 s and 2.8 m in next 4 s. What will be
speed of the body at the end of 10th second from the start.
(20)A body leaving a certain point O moves with an acceleration, which is
constant in magnitude and direction. At the end of the fifth second, its velocity
is 1.5 m/s. At the end of the sixth second, the body stops and then begins to
move backwards. (a) Find the distance traversed by the body, before it stops.
(b) Determine the velocity with which the body returns to point O.
(21).A hundred metre sprinter increases her speed from rest uniformly at the
rate of 1.5 m/s2 up to three quarters of the total run and covers the last quarter
with uniform speed. How much time does she take to cover the first half and the
second half of the run?
(22).The equation: √x =t+9 gives the variation of displacement of a particle with
time. Show that the acceleration of the particle is constant.
(23) The position of an object moving along X-axis is given by x = a+bt²
where a = 8.5m, b = 2.5 m/s2 and t is measured in seconds. What is the velocity
at t=0 and t = 2 s? What is the average velocity between t = 2 s and t=4s?
(24) A particle moving along a straight line has a velocity v m/s, when it cleared
a distance of x metres. These two are connected by the relation: v =√49+x. Find
the acceleration of the particle when its velocity is 1 m/s.
