GEC ART - ART APPRECIATION

LEARNING ACTIVITY 2

NAME: Kristine Louise Supieza

Date: September 7, 2023 Class Time: MWF 10:30-11:30 AM

I. Know the meaning of the following terms.

1. Assumption
- It is something that is accepted as true even without proof or evidences. For example,
art is universal.
2. Culture
- It is the arts and other manifestations of human intellectual achievement regarded
collectively. To me, culture encompasses the practices and customs that have been embraced and
perpetuated by society since time immemorial.

II. Shape up your mind.

1. Why is art universal?
Art is universally recognized as it has been present throughout human history. Even in
times when formal education about various art forms and techniques did not exist, people have
been engaging in artistic creation and performance. This enduring human endeavor has
persisted from our earliest days to the present, making it a shared and universal experience
among us.
2. Why is art not nature?
Art is not nature because, when we refer to nature, it is not man-made; it is an act
crafted by God. While it is equally as beautiful as art and evokes similar feelings, it remains
solely as beauty and sensation. There are no experiences, thoughts, aspirations, or inspirations
inherent in it, as it was created without the involvement of a human hand. In contrast, art
involves an artist, a human, who imbues their essence into their creation.
III. React to the following statements.
1. Art is a product of the imagination.
In my view, art is not solely an expression of our heart and soul; it is also a manifestation
of our inner thoughts and, most importantly, our imagination. Our imagination encompasses
what we conceive of certain things and how we perceive specific events. When we translate
these thoughts into various forms of art, we harness our imagination to infuse creativity,
aesthetics, and even colors, whether vibrant or somber, into our creations. It is our imagination
that ultimately guides and shapes our artistic endeavors. Thus, art is undeniably a product of the
imagination.
IV. Essay
Write an essay consisting of 150 – 300 words.
My Personal Experience in Art
Living in the Philippines, where color is everywhere, encouraged me to develop a
positive and healthy relationship with art. This connection was particularly nurtured within our
home. The first time my grandfather discovered my ability to draw (though not exceptionally
well), he wholeheartedly supported my creative endeavors. Whenever I requested them, he
would buy me pencils, crayons, and paper. His pride was evident when I achieved 2nd place in
a school poster-making competition. He shared a valuable lesson with me: our creations serve
as evidence of our existence, and if you possess the ability to create, continue doing so.
I was deeply moved by his words. In typical Filipino households, despite our rich
traditions and culture, there tends to be a negative and dismissive attitude towards art. "Unya
mabuhi diay ka ana nga passion? Pangita rag trabaho na dakog sweldo." It is disheartening that
this perspective is prevalent, but I understand its origins. I hope that in the future, a more
positive outlook on art will replace these pessimistic sentiments.
During my senior high school years, I began to openly express my profound fondness for
writing. I applied to join the school's publication organization and was accepted as a Filipino
writer. I also participated in a poetry competition, where we were tasked with composing our
own pieces and performing them. I secured 1st place, and what made the achievement even
more satisfying was the positive reception of my work. I was commended for speaking with
unwavering sincerity and for exhibiting a highly creative approach to crafting words.
Now that I am in college, I confess that maintaining my creative pursuits has become
challenging, especially since I have chosen a program that somewhat diverges from them—
BSA. Consequently, I am immensely grateful for this course, as I recognize it provides an
opportunity for me to share my experiences with art and to learn from others as well.
