Equations of Lines

Find the equation of the graphs and their x- and y-intercepts.

Make up situations for which the graphs are accurate

representations.
U7L3: Graphing and Functions

Objective:
I can predict the number of solutions a system
of linear equations will have and find them.
Systems of Linear Equations & Their Solutions
● Def. System of Equations:
A set of two or more equations

● Solutions to Systems of Equations

The point(s) at which ALL equations in the system
are true at the same time.
Systems of Linear Equations & Their Solutions
● Ex:

There are many solutions to

each line individually, but
only ONE (x,y) ordered pair
works for both.
Systems of Linear Equations & Their Solutions
Practice
Determine whether (1,2) is a solution of the system:
Solving Linear Systems

By Graphing:
● Graph both lines
● Find where the lines intersect
● The x- and y-coordinates of the intersection point are
the x- and y-values of the solution to the system.
Solving Linear Systems

By Graphing:
Solving Linear Systems
By Substitution:
● Solve ONE equation for ONE variable (pick the easiest) to
get an expression equivalent to the variable
● Substitute the expression into the OTHER equation
● Solve the resulting equation
● Substitute that value in to any equation with that variable
and solve for the other variable
Solving Linear Systems
By Substitution:
Solving Linear Systems
By Elimination:
● Look for variables that cancel each other out when the
equations are added
● If none, multiply the equation(s) by factors so that they do
● Add the equations
● Solve the resulting equation
● Substitute the value back into any original equation
● Solve for the remaining variable
Solving Linear Systems
By Elimination:
No Solution or Infinitely Many Solutions

No Solution
● Graphed lines are parallel
● Equations have the same slope but different y-intercepts
● Solving results in an equation that is NEVER TRUE
Infinitely Many Solutions
● Graphed lines are the same line
● Equations have the same slope and y-intercept
● Solving results in an equation that is ALWAYS TRUE
No Solution or Infinitely Many Solutions

How many solutions?

Breaking Even Point
Toll Bridge:
The toll to a bridge costs
$2.50. Commuters who use
the bridge often have the
option to buy a monthly
discount pass for $21 which
reduces the toll to $1.00.
