Introduction

 A Miniature Circuit Breaker (MCB) is a type of electrical

protection device that automatically switches off electrical
circuits during abnormal conditions such as overload or short
circuit.
 MCBs are commonly used in residential and commercial
electrical systems to protect against electrical faults and
prevent damage to electrical equipment and wiring.
MCB TYPES
v Several different MCB types are available – types A, B, C, D, K, and Z.
v However, the three key versions are type B, type C, and type D.
v Each is designed to be responsive to the likely strength of
electrical surges in different settings.
PARTS OF MCB
Operating Lever: It typically
consists of a handle or lever
located on the front face of the
MCB, which can be toggled
between two positions: ON and
OFF.
Trip Coil:It automatically trips the
breaker to interrupt the flow of
electricity when necessary.
Bi-metallic strip: It detects
overcurrent and triggers the
circuit disconnection.
PARTS OF MCB
Fixed Contact: It ensures flow of
electricity through the MCB.
Moving Contact:It physically
disconnects from the fixed contact
to interrupt the flow of electrical
current during abnormal conditions.
Arc Splitter:It redirects and
manages electrical arcs to prevent
damage to internal components
during circuit interruption.
ADVANTAGES OF MCB

 It can be reused as there is no need of changing any

wire.
 It responds quickly against short circuits and
overload due to its sensitivity.
 It has less maintenance and replacement cost.
 It comes in different types and can be used for
various purposes.
DISADVANTAGES OF MCB

 Its cost is more as compared to MCCB and fuse.

 Sometimes, it can not properly work and protect
against earth faults.
 It is only used for small current-carrying
applications.
 It is vulnerable to high temperature of the
surroundings.
USAGES:

 It prevents damage from excessive currents.

 It quickly disconnects circuits during short circuits.

 It detects and prevents ground faults for safety.

 It contributes to energy efficiency efforts.

APPLICATIONS

 It safeguard electrical systems in homes and offices.

 It protects critical machinery and distribution systems
in industrial facilities.
 It protects IT infrastructure from electrical faults in
data centres.
 It safeguard circuits in network infrastructure in
telecommunication facilities.
