Problem 3
A device from a copying machine is shown. It moves in a horizontal plane. Develop the dynamic system
model, assuming the mass of the bar ‘m1’ is negligible in comparison to that of the attached mass ‘m2’
and that the angular motions are small. The mass ‘m2’ is subjected to a step input force ‘F’. Find an
expression for the displacement of point B due to ‘F’. Simulate using Simscape.
Problem 4
Write the equations of the following electrical circuits and derive the transfer function between the
output and input voltages ‘Vo’ and ‘Vi’ respectively. Simulate the systems using Simscape.
a) b)
c) d)

Problem 5
Write the equations of the following hydraulic systems and derive the transfer function between the
output and input flow rates ‘qo’ and ‘qi’ respectively. Simulate the systems using Simscape.
a) b)
c) d)
Problem 6
In the shown liquid-level system the outflow rate Q in (m3/s) through the outflow valve is related to the
tank head H in (m) by 𝑄 = 0.01√𝐻.
When the inflow rate 𝑄𝑖 = 0.015 m3/s, the head stays constant. For 𝑡 < 0, the system is at steady state
(𝑄𝑖 = 0.015 m3/s). At 𝑡 = 0, the inflow valve is closed and so there is no inflow for 𝑡 ≥ 0. The
capacitance (area) of the tank is 2 m2.
Find the time necessary to empty the tank to half the original head. Plot the tank head ‘H’ and the valve
resistance ‘R’ against the output flow ‘Q’. Comment on the plots.
