CHAPTER 1: THE PROBLEM
INTRODUCTION
Many students using social media, there are growing concerns about how it
might affect their self-esteem, we still don't fully understand how different ways of
using it like how often students use it, what kind of content they see, and how
they interact with others can impact how they feel about themselves. Social
media affects our environment, especially for students, because some students
use it in the wrong way and are exposed to different platforms since they are not
aware of how it influences them.
Early 21st century marked the emergence and growth of social networking
sites in the whole world. Since then, these sites have become a major part of
people's lives, specially, the lives of the youth. Many teenagers are using social
media, especially Facebook, to build relationships, connect with the world, share
and gain knowledge and information, build stronger personalities and have better
social lives (Boyd, 2007). Mitchell (2002). Farnpun Scientifis Jommal Angur 2017
odition Vol.11 No.23 153N 157-7881 (Phant)-ISSN 1857-3421claimed that social
networking sites are used by youngsters to get engaged in romantic and casual
online relationships. It has been observed by the changing behavior of the people
that so cial media has many negative repercussions on people. Social networking
sites help people to make social comparisons which increase the psychological
distress of individuals and as a result lower the overall level of self-esteem (Chen
& Lee, 2013). Many observers and researchers believe that due to increase in
the usage of social networking sites, people have become the victims of lower
self-esteem and self-growth.
One thing that grew from the smartphone is social media. An article stated
that social media has been able to bridge people from across the world, yet has
isolated the people nearest them. Since the rise of the internet from the mid-
1990s, the masses are given unlimited access to information like never before.
The possibilities are endless. All at once the entirety of this vast world seemed to
open up to each other. Everyone, no matter how different, became connected.
Because of this, however, people’s attention has been drastically diverted and
they spend more time looking at their phone screens and devices. The time we
spend interacting with the people around us in real life are minimized. (Hilbert &
López 2011)
In addition, it has also been said in some studies that emotionally unstable
people are more likely to be smartphone addicts. A person who is a frequent user
of social media has higher chance of having low self-esteem. This is in part due
to the common comparison of one’s own life to the of others as shown in social
media. Having to be exposed to the toxic an often, unrealistic beauty standards of
the media often, leads to insecurity and itself image issues as well. (Busari and
Atinuke, 2019)
The purpose of the study is to look into these observations and see if they
actually apply to students. Specifically, the study will be conducted in the school
of Daraga Community College. Data will be collected from First Year BEED
student. There will be a total of 50 students who will receive the questionnaire.

The purpose of this study is to understand how social media influence students' self-esteem.
Specifically, the study aims to understand how different social media platforms affect

prevalence of social media, there is a need to examine whether its usage contributes
positively or negatively to students' self-esteem.
